Duolingo has been receiving a lot of criticism lately, not only in the form of Duolingo memes, but also in claims that it is not an effective language learning tool. Today, I’m going to review Duolingo and explain why Duolingo is still the best beginner language learning app on the market. More importantly, we’ll go over some Duolingo tips and tricks so that you can learn the best methods for how to get fluent with Duolingo-no matter if you’re studying Spanish, French, German, Italian, or any other language!
For starters, Duolingo is completely free. They do offer Duolingo Premium, a paid version of the app, however in my experience it’s perfectly fine to stick to the free version of the app. This is because Duolingo CEO Luis Von Ahn founded the company with the goal of providing freely accessible education to all.
The next best thing about Duolingo is its gamification. The app was designed to mimic the look and feel of a mobile game, meaning that it’s actually really fun to use! Furthermore, the language learning app’s streak system encourages users to study their target language consistently, something that is crucial for getting fluent in a language with Duolingo.
To get the most out of Duolingo and achieve your language learning goals, it’s best to dedicate as much time as you can each day to your Duolingo lessons. If you follow Duolingo’s advertised time of 15 minutes, you’ll find language learning progress to be slow.
Additionally, there are lots of Duolingo features that most language learners are not aware of or don’t use. Duolingo Stories, for example, allow you to practice newly learned vocabulary words and develop reading skills. On the desktop version of Duolingo, users can deactivate the word bank and study the Tips section of each lesson to deepen their understanding.

I didn't even know Duolingo had those desktop features! Thanks for this video! I've been contemplating restarting it, and now I definitely will. Those notifications are a small price to pay for so much knowledge!

Awesome! It probably took me a year to notice the desktop features, but they were a gamechanger when I did. I'm not sure why Duolingo doesn't promote them more or bring them to mobile!

I think duolingo gets interesting with languages far removed from English with different alphabets etc, I’m finding it useful to use it simultaneously with anki with Arabic and make flash cards using sniping tools. I think the problem is many beginners and definitely schoolkids just use it like it was a game- no thinking in the target language or reading out loud etc

I've never tried using Duolingo for a language with a non Latin alphabet, but I hear the quality can really vary. Honestly I'm surprised you've found the Arabic course to be useful--it was only recently released and usually it takes some time for them to work out the kinks! But anyways, my whole philosophy with Duolingo is that it _should_ be a game. That way, you can test out a language and get in the habit of spending 15-30 minutes a day learning it. That makes it easier to make the jump to more serious resources.

Stop lying, it isn’t free if they make you watch ads for which they get paid! Stop lying to people!

If you aren't paying money, it's free. Of course Duolingo also has expenses that are necessary for them to keep providing their service and the ad revenue helps cover them. Which is why I will always happily watch an ad on Duolingo if it means I can keep using the service for free 😊

@@connorgioiafigliu not free in my book. The Duolingo organisation is not the Saints they pretend to be, they are not interested in teaching languages, just in making money!
