7 BIGGEST LANGUAGE LEARNING MISTAKES (for beginners)

- Language learning is a simple process, but if you’re making any of these mistakes, then you’re seriously slowing down your progress. Here are 7 common language learning mistakes that are preventing you from achieving your language goals. These tips will be especially helpful if you’re just starting to learn a new language, but even if you’re at an advanced level, these tips might cause you to reconsider your study methods.
All too often, people make their first mistake in language learning before they even start by not having a clear motivation. The problem with relying on a generic motivation like this to propel your language learning is that they give little incentive to keep working, making it easier to give up. Clear, specific motivations can be used to form attainable goals that provide a clear path to success. From here, you can create a study plan that targets this goal and overtime adjust your study plan if it’s not helping you to reach it.
Another mistake that will prevent you from achieving your long term goals is failing to establish a schedule. This sets you up for defeat in the long run, because language learning will fall to the bottom of your list of priorities. However, sticking to a schedule will ensure that you stay on track with meeting your goals. This is especially important as a beginner, when you haven’t yet made language learning a part of your daily routine.
Choosing the wrong resources is a common way in which people sabotage their language learning goals. If your goal is to be able to speak a language, for example, then your study routine has to involve resources that train your speaking skills. This could mean online language tutors, language exchange partners, or even just a friend who speaks your target language
Since everyone has different goals and learning styles in language learning, useful resources vary person to person and what works for someone else may not work for you.
Another language learning mistake that is pretty widespread is not taking the effort to learn pronunciation. Of course, no one expects you to speak another language accent-free, but being able to reproduce the basic sounds of a language is a necessity for being understood and progressing to a more advanced level. It’s also especially important for beginners to dedicate time to learn proper pronunciation, since it only gets harder when you’ve been studying a language for years and have developed bad habits.
Probably the biggest language learning mistake, and the one that set’s polyglots apart from casual language learners, is the fear of mistakes. Being afraid of making mistakes will hurt you, since it will prevent you from getting the practice you need to advance to the next level. Making mistakes is a natural part of the language learning process and one that polyglots take advantage of to grow and expand their vocabulary.
Another mistake that’s closely related to the fear of mistakes is being afraid to practice. The fear of practicing with native speakers can be one of the hardest single things to overcome, but once you do, it is so rewarding.
My last major language learning mistake, but one that’s especially common here on RUclips, is comparing yourself to others. With so many videos of people claiming to speak an insane number of languages or to have learned a language in an incredibly short period of time, comparing yourself to others is very easy to do.

Helpful and useful information!
Glad it was helpful!
After 3 midterms, 2 weeks, and 1 hurricane, I finally got this video up!!! 😂
Keep on sharing my friend, stay safe
Thanks, you too! You've got a great voice!
I love learning new languages so much but these issues are so real! Let's do this, you have given me the motivation to keep learning!
Go for it!
Great video🙌 My biggest mistake is that I don't practice my speaking skills because I'm afraid of making mistakes. But I'm working on that😅
I definitely feel that, but it's so nice when you say something and actually get understood!

Glad you liked it 😉
Great advice, man. I'm learning a couple languages right now to prepare for travels next year. This is helpful.
Great to hear! Any special trips you've got planned? I just checked out your channel too, by the way!
@@connorgioiafigliu After this pandemic, I want to revist Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon. Will probably fly into Turkey afterwards and explore the country extensively for the first time. I'm pretty excited!
@@Partekal Awesome! Turkey's pretty high up on my list too
Well said! Even though I don’t have a schedule per se at the moment I’ve learnt never to have days off. I think of myself as a Spanish speaker (the language im working on atm) ...just one with much less vocab comprehension and speaking ability than natives! And if I’m a Spanish speaker why wouldn’t I interact with the language every day?
I have to admit that my schedule has fallen to the side over the last couple weeks, as I've been too focused on RUclips. I need to do a better job following my own advice ahaha! But seriously, I also try to interact with all of my languages in some capacity on a daily basis.
Honestly, great video man! I can definitely relate T_T
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done bro👏
Thanks ✌️
Interesting video! I am guilty especially of not studying pronunciation :-D
Haha yeah I think it's definitely one of the most boring things to study!
I will follow your channel very well my friend❤👏👏
Thanks for coming ❤

Good luck with your language learning journey and YouTubing. Left you a couple of likes to help you in the fight against the RUclips algorithm :)
Haha thank you my friend! I'm looking forward to whatever you put out next. It looks like you'll be eligible for a custom URL by the time you read this!
I subscribed to your RUclips Channel. I came to your RUclips Channel from your comment on Brett Conti. You wrote you watch turkish movies, by the way I am learning both French and Japanese langauge.
Thanks again for the support William! I'm hoping to get some French videos out before the end of the year. And while I don't study Japanese, I also love Japanese movies, so let me know if you're looking for recommendations!
@@connorgioiafigliu I am mostly into animes. I enjoy watching Japanese animes. Finally, I cannot wait for you to make french videos.
@@WilliamOunj-ge8th Haha then you've probably seen all the animes I have to recommend, since I've just seen the ones that are the most famous. Have you seen J'ai perdu mon corps (2019) though? It's a really good French anime. My favorite Japanese films are High and Low (1963) and anything by Kore-eda. Also I just thought about
Hiroshima mon amour (1959). It's one of the first movies in the French New Wave and it takes place in Japan--the perfect combination of your interests 😂
Thanks for sharing this lovely information do visit me too
Thanks and of course!
Nice good video. Thank you for watching the video.RUclips friend. Come and see my dog.Have a good day.💓💓👍💯💯.
