    She was absolutely brilliant as the Witch. Clearly sinister from the outset, then putting on a nice act to win Edmund over, but still being brusque and short with him, and all punctuated by manic outbursts of anger, followed quickly by calm and friendly demeanor, but not too friendly. So well done.

    Tilda is a really good actress and really scary in the new films. However, I prefer this witch for three reasons:

    3. Barbara Kellerman is a really good actress!

      What is it with everyone crapping on the Witch’s design in the Disney version? I know Tilda Swinton’s version didn’t look anything like the book, but nobody complained about Frankenstein or Gene Wilder’s portrayal of Willy Wonka or Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch of the West not looking anything like the book description. So why does the look of the White Witch matter more compared to the other appearances of the aforementioned characters on film?

    • @stinameaner
      @stinameaner Год назад

      @@hunterolaughlin I don't think it's just the appearance. It might jusy be a point theu bring up veczuse theu don't loke thay version as much. This version of the witch is more like c.s lewis' interpretation in terms.of being a 'larger than life character' Tilda's portrayal was more mellow..it was good and I actually liked he way she looked but I understand why people prefer this witch better..I generally prefer this version altogether as well depsite thr lower budget and some hammy acting. It's just an opinion, we all have them.

  • @theproplady
    @theproplady 9 лет назад +18

    I always preferred this witch to the grotesquely costumed witch in the Disney version. She seemed to be a large ham in the books and they really captured it here. (There's a cartoon version of this story made in the 70's that also has a hammy witch in it. I'm sure it's got to be on RUclips somewhere...)

    • @hunterolaughlin
      @hunterolaughlin 3 года назад +1

      Jadis was not a hammy villain in the books. Barbara Kellerman’s performance is an insult to the White Witch. I recently re-read the book in honor of its 70th anniversary, and Jadis was a lot more restrained and subtle. For example, this Witch freaks out over learning there are 4 kids in Narnia and her chief of Police being slain compared to her book counterpart who never freaked out and took the information in very calmly. This is proof that book Jadis is not as hammy or over-the-top as the portrayals before Swinton. The differences to how she reacted to 4 kids being in Narnia and Maugrim’s death in the book compared to the miniseries shows a stark contrast in behavior and personality. With how book Jadis takes in the information suggests she is a strategist who thinks and plans her next course of action instead of acting out on her emotions compared to Kellerman’s Witch who overreacts whenever she hears some news that could seem like a threat to her. So, go back re-read the book and compare the Witch’s personality to Kellerman’s.

    Pretty much starch and suger mixed in water with the soapwart as an emulsifier, most modern version don't use it preferring chemical cooking emulsifiers that have no taste at all. Its then flavored with rosewater, mastic or lemon giving it distinctive colors. He's eating mastic flavored ones. If you want to try it and your not in the UK most places sell it under the turkish or romanian names for it. Lokum or Rahat. They make other flavors now, BTW.

    I love the witch from the BBC version because I grew up with her but she's not nearly as sinister or threatening as the new one is. She's just too funny!

    And thus began my lifelong infatuation with fair-skinned, statuesque, overbearing women. They've been stringing me along with Turkish Delight ever since...

      I know I'm five years late and doubt you'll ever see this, but you might wanna look up Lady Dimitrescu. She's pale, 9 ft 6 to Jadis's 7 ft, lives in a Castle, and has CRAAAZZYYY powers :)

    A little bit indeed, poor him... He looks really nice, though! I'm glad that they showed Lucy's second visit in this BBC thing. In the new movie, Lucy only mentions that she's see has seen Tumnus again, but he's not shown opening the door.

    LOL, "This witch is gay"! Barbera Kellerman was in all the BBC Narnia stories and this role is her best. I thought she was a little bit scary when I was a youngster watching this. Remember too that in the 80's the BBC didn't splash quite as much cash on these things and they didn't have access to CGI! It was 1988, the world wasn't like it is nowadays.
    Try picking up the book(s) I'd recommmend also.
