    One of my brothers used to make rail guns of sorts back in the 70's. he took one of mom's used thread spools made of Styrofoam and pressed two needles in it spaced to go into a wall outlet. when he plugged it in one of the needles would fly out really fast across the room. Years ahead of his time and too inexpensive for government!

    While Hollywood's one in that Transformers movie was visually cool, IMO the real ones are way, way more frightening. The amount of energy in that projectile is awe-inspiring. The 2008 test was pumping 10.64 megajoules, with a muzzle velocity of over 8270 FPS (remember, a mile is only 5280'). Very glad indeed it isn't pointed at me. :)

    I designed and built a rail gun many years, 14 I think, ago very similar to this in technology and theory, but on a small scale of three feet long. Used carbon brushes on the projectile which burned up rapidly. Had to use two car batteries for power source. It did well as an experiment. Would send a 1.5 ounce rod about 40 feet. However, the 'barrel was self destructive due to the current flow. I used copper conductors which had to be cleaned between firings or would fail to conduct. This was just a hobby experiment. I thought feasible but only with technology I did not have. It was fun. Simple concept, but required current is very high.

      Considering that it has been experimented with to this point is a tremendous step forward. I remember in it's early stages, that they couldn't even develop a projectile strong enough to withstand the power of the energy used to shoot it. It would just break up. They finally have and will improve on it with further experiments. As you have noted in the video, the technical aspects of this gun are in their early stages, very complicated and would be too big to install on a ship or ground use just as the early laser technology and nuclear bombs had to be miniaturized for it's present use. Also what they're not telling you is, that once it's improved, it can hit a missile, plane or satellite seconds. Much faster than any rocket technology anywhere.

    Thanks for making this. I haven't kept track of the progress. This could make battleships relevant again. Even with everything that was there to make that last one work, it took up much less space then the equipment used on the 16-inch guns on the Iowa-class battleships. And then there's the fact that individual rounds are not explosive and are so much smaller. Simply Amazing.

      @@bruzote you just don't get it. We wouldn't need those large 16 inch guns. A new class of BB could easily be designed around the rail gun system and a nuclear power plant. I can easily envision a ship with four main turrets with four cannon each. They wouldn't be lobbing the munitions of the past. They would be firing rounds that weigh no more than 25Kg super sonic speeds and no explosives. The velocity of that railgun is 2400 meters per second. A 25Kg round would hit the target releasing the equivalent of 72 sticks of dynamite at the point of impact. Think about that.

      So the flames and maybe the noise makes sense but what about the smoke? To me that seems like they are using gunpowder to assist in some way. The use of Gunpowder would explain the short barrel as well. As a slightly longer barrel would be required to have enough penetrating speed to do what a rail gun is needed to do as it would be simple to add more or better armor to a vehicle and make themselves harder to destroy.

      With further advancements in battery and capacitor technology, we could be seeing the average combatant equipped with handheld rail guns in the not-too-distant future, the tech is there now only it's still too heavy and bulky.
      There are videos on the net showing off people's home builds, I'd love a go myself but I 'ain't 'gonna lie, it's well beyond my current abilities.

    man this is going to be NUTS when they figure out how to put these on Tanks i don't think any tank armor in the world could stop something like that

    • @ThePar13
      @ThePar13 6 лет назад +18

      tank armour these days is more about destroying the projectile rather than absorbing projectiles, they fire explosive at incoming projectiles to disable them, but ur right, if it could pass the initial defense, the tank armour would obliterate XD

    • @DarthDesigner

      This thing needs A LOT of energy....for now even for a ship is difficult to produce enough energy to power the railgun...for a tank it's a veeeeeery far future ahah

      im kinda hoping the kenetic rod weapon becomes a thing. Just as destructive as a nuke without the fallout. Nothing says fuck your country(N korea) like dropping a huge hardened rod from a satellite through the atmosphere, and having it impact like a small meteor.

      The ray gun has a problem, lasers go straight! The earth is round so you still need a bullet if you want to hit a target farther than the horizon

      transeditor
      It's like a bullet train or "maglev"...it uses an electromagnetic field (in two rails) to propel a tungsten rod projectile (a very strong hunk of metal) at hypersonic speeds (4,000mph+). It uses massive amounts of electricity 1-to-5 million amps (an average home has a 200amp breaker/fuse box) per shot and is pushing the development of super capacitors and many other tech developments.

      The battleships are too big and easily detectable, not a good idea at all.
      The newest ships need to be, yes powerful, but stealth too.
      Check the ZUMWALT CLASS, the ship that will carry these guns to understand how a stealth ship should look like :)

    • @OozoraKazuki
      @OozoraKazuki 5 лет назад

      @@DarthDesigner you forget that a battleship doesn't necessarily need to be large, and itself can be stealth, if it's geometry is carefully studied, something akin to the Yamato style battleships you see on the "MuvLuv" Anime.
      Somehow a Robert Class monitor sized vessel armed primarily with railguns as primary weapons is already as or more powerfully armed than a fullsize battleship itself.

      What about retrofitting all arleigh Burke Destroyers with railguns since the Zumwalt Destroyer Project was probably failed because of lacking ammunition for the main cannon.
