I've never met an Impact driver that was too powerful until I met the Kobalt XTR. I can honestly say that the 2400 in-lbs or 200 ft-lbs is very conservatively rated. Additionally, I didn't see a lot of difference between the 2.0 and 4.0 when using for short durations and small bursts when both were fully charged. One can argue that the peak draw is higher on the 4.0 and I saw mixed results with the 2.0 being in the middle of two 4.0Ah batteries tested today.
Lows is pulling the old gm rating trick where it always surpasses the torque ratings so when the next guy matches or surpasses there rating there still in the game.
I'm curious how accurate the torque adapter is. When was the last time you calibrated it? I have used the kobalt tools professionally and have different results
I bought the 3 tool xtr kit with the hammer drill, impact driver and flashlight for $289 then AFTER I bought it found out I could have got the 5 tool kit WITH a dang rolling tool box for only $100 more that came with the xtr sawzall with orbital action and the xtr 7 1/4 circular saw. I'm so mad at myself! On the plus side of things though I had to pay an additional $300 for the other two tools at least I got the free 4.0 AH battery special lol 😭
Lol, I remember before the XTR was released, Kobalt caught hell from the majority for not being "professional grade". Now that the XTR is kicking ass and taking names it's, "overpowered", and "not needed", jeeze!
The XTR isn't too powerful....it has raised the bar for small impact drivers! I just bought the XTR kit from Lowes and I love it. The tool quality is very high, much better than that of the Milwaukee kit I returned the other day. Lowes has gained a new customer with their Kobalt line of tools.
The Kolbolt XTR Impact Driver is my new favorite go to tool. I also want the XTR impact wrench at $199 but for now i can use the driver until I get one.
That is so impressive with the half inch 1/4 inch adapter and half inch deep socket would of thought there would of been alot of torque loss 🤔 but dosen't seem to have much torque loss at all
The Kobalt XTR was a beast. I thought the full anvil on the Bosch would be where it’s at, but boy was I wrong. The Kobalt XTR is the strongest 1/4 impact driver I own.
The Wifee just came home and serprize me with the Freak !!! Oh my gosh I just about fainted!! I’m so excited it’s like my first power tool. But I have to wait until I heel , just had neck surgery . Thanks 🙏
I bought the 3 tool xtr combo set with the hammer drill, impact driver, and the light,2 batteries, and a charger with hard case. Because I bought that they gave me the skillsaw with the promotion. Too bad it wasn't the xtr saw.
I ended up picking up the kobalt xtr 1/4" impact driver since I'm an apartment maintenance technician so most of the time I'm driving screws or bolts into old brick and mortar style apartments and i got it brand new for $159 which it was originally $179
Great video. I have the Kobalt 1/4" impact driver but not that model. I just learned how much you can do with these little impact drivers. 30 years ago I had a 115 volt Craftsman 1/2" impact wrench. What a hunk of junk it was. I could not even take off wheel lugs with it. These little 1/4" battery powered impact wrenches are far better than that junk one I had years ago. I am just so impressed with how these new battery powered impact wrenches work. I am so glad I purchased mine. I actually have two of them. I also have the 1/2" Kobalt. If I would have known how much power these little 1/4" drive impacts work, I would have never purchased the 1/2" drive one. Thanks for the very interesting video. Well done and very informative. Barry G. Kery
I still own a Craftsman 115V impact wrench. I bought it at a pawn shop around 20 years ago, so I don't know how old it is. It's heavy, but pretty powerful, and has no trouble taking off lug nuts from any of my 3 vehicles. I used it a lot when I first got it, and still use it occasionally when working on vehicles in my garage, but cordless impacts these days are stronger, and more convenient. Maybe I'll get rid of it soon. It could still be useful for a hobbyist who doesn't want to spend the money on battery powered impacts, or on a compressor and pneumatic tools.
@@dreadnaught688 completely understandable considering how much output it can do, so not a bad idea to have a couple spare batteries on hand for backup if needed; and really the batteries arent hideously priced either. I saw a 8 amp hour XTR battery at Lowes yesterday for 139.
I have many of the previous kobalt line and there great, the XTR line is even better, and the batteries are reasonably priced compared to every other brand.
I love my 5 piece XTR kit love it I have the regular brushless kobalt and that is still impressive but the XTR is no joke it is close to my Milwaukee fuel tools
I can at least conpare the Freak 2 vs Milwaukee Gen3 and overall the Bosch is the better tool even it is like 10% weaker than the Gen3. Its better balanced, more trigger control, no trigger malfunctions like Milwaukee and it has way less vibration.
better yet, the Freak 2 has always had a double ball bearing collet, while the Gen3 had a single ball bearing collet which has been infamous for bits falling off. Milwaukee just implemented a double ball bearing collet on the Gen 3 but it remained the same part number, so too bad for people who still got the earlier ones...
It is better to have the power and not need it( hence 3 speed + assist) the xtr line is badass and all the tools are top tier contractor grade. $399 for the 5 piece with an awesome waterproof rolling box. XTR has changed the game. That bosch should go against last gen non xtr.
I'm a little confused about the big difference in the tightening specs for the 2 4AH batteries. What was the difference between those two batteries? The 2nd one showed significantly less tightening power over even the 2AH battery.
This one has the backwards selector switch which annoys me but I bought it as a cheap alternative with a comfort grip handle. They made a 108 gear version with the same part numbers that have the selector switch that I like. I have it in the 3/8” and 1/4” version and bought them just for the grip. Wish Tekton would make a comfort grip option. I’d rebuy most of the Tekton ratchets if they came out with comfort grip.
Comparing these is a little like apples to oranges, given the 24V vs 18V difference. The Kobalt is obviously going to be able to put out more torque. I am not saying this because I own a Bosch Freak, but because there is going to be a clear power difference.
If kobalt can take off a crank pulley bolt that would be pretty insane.... *last memory bouncing on 8 foot long breaker bar. Especially with that quarter inch hex. Almost unbelievable. Thinking about it u tightened that bolt to 300 ft lbs just by hanging off of it...soo.....the bolt I must have taken off was probably at 900.....hmm

If you need more torque than what the Bosch freak has... it's time to grab the impact wrench. They make separate tools for a reason. That Bosch is a perfect tool with extremely good craftsmanship and quality!
So let’s get this straight a Kobalt XTR 1/4" impact driver went toe to toe with a 1/2" impact wrench. Meeting or exceeding the challenges and performance for a job it was NOT designed for but the Bosch was.
The looks of the tools are subjective. I happen to like the way the Kobalt is designed, but the real proof is in how they perform, and the Kobalt is just a much stronger tool. I also like the different modes available on the Kobalt that provide options for more precision in use. The socket drive on the Bosch is a nice touch, but for me that's it's only real advantage over the Kobalt, and that's not nearly enough to overcome it's shortcomings when comparing the two tools. I've owned the Kobalt XTR impact driver and hammer drill for a few months now and have nothing but good things to say about them.
You never seem to bring up price! Most of these tool brands are $40, $50 and even $100 Bux more than the Kobalt equivalent. You buy the tool, battery, charger and your in neck deep for $400 big ones. I aint doin that for one damn tool. As to the Kobalt being a tad heavier? For the Kobalt money i think i can handle the few extra ounces all day.
The non-sale price for the Kobalt XTR impact driver, including a 4AH battery and rapid charger is $179 at Lowes. For $289 you can get the Kobalt XTR kit that includes an impact driver, hammer drill, led work light, 2 batteries, charger, and hard side storage case. They were also selling an XTR kit for $399 that included the impact driver, hammer drill, rotary action reciprocating saw, circular saw, led work light, 2 batteries, charger, and rolling hard side storage case, although I don't see that kit offered on Lowes site currently. Lowes randomly offers promotional deals on most of their tools, and when I bought my $289 Kobalt XTR kit a couple of months ago it included an additional 4AH battery for free. The additional free battery was included with any Kobalt XTR tool or XTR kit, although I think that particular promotion has expired by now.
I don't know where you live, but i can't see those prices anywhere here in the states. The kobalt is $134 with the 4.0 battery and charger, The bosch freak ( the same one in this video) is $199.
The XTR is nothing special. How does anyone else not see what they did here? Guess people just like to fall for marketing gimmicks like Dewalt 20V lol. They took a 1/2" torque wrench (mid torque Milwaukee and Makita BTW285 comparables 200-220ft lbs forward, 400ftlbs + breakaway) and put a 1/4" hex collet on it. That's just dumb. The tool is huge. No need for it to be that big to drive screws or smaller lags in which is what you'd be doing with a 1/4" drive.
Idk comments like these may me think you are ungrateful for another tool option out there thats competing with the big dogs. “Huge” tool is a funny word to see thrown around when the difference here is literally just a few mm. Its nitpicky to say the least. Huge in my opinion would be the 1/2” 1200ftlb impact wrench compared to Milwaukee’s 12V impact wrench.
Kobalt doesn't have any 1/2 inch mid torque impact wrenches with anywhere near the specs you're citing. They have a couple of full size impacts that are roughly twice the physical size of this XTR impact driver, and a couple of compact impact wrenches, in 3/8ths and 1/2 inch sizes, and both of those compact impact wrenches have less torque than this XTR impact driver. With a bare weight of 2.4 pounds, your definition of "huge" is much different than mine. The only significant size difference between the Kobalt and the Bosch is because of the bigger battery on the Kobalt.
I've never met an Impact driver that was too powerful until I met the Kobalt XTR. I can honestly say that the 2400 in-lbs or 200 ft-lbs is very conservatively rated. Kobalt just stole some of Milwaukee's market share. GG

At $79 that’s not a bad price what gets you later on is then trying to buying other tools or into the rest of the line when things aren’t on sale.
Both are very cool, but probably too much tool for me! Thanks Chris!
I have the XTR ¼" and I have to say its super impressive. I just got the XTR ½" impact driver and I cant wait to try it on lugs.
I have the XTR half inch wrench and I can say from experience it's a beast and it'll run all day no problem. It really likes a full battery though
