  • The horse chestnuts and ivy leaves do the washing job as they contain saponin. Saponin is natural detergent and foaming substance which cleans grease and lift the dirt from clothing. Ivy is evergreen and grows everywhere so you can have sufficient supply all year. Using plants for washing is the most environmental & economic friendly. Wearing gloves if your skin is sensitive when picking the ivy leaves. I use the crushed leaves (in a net) directly putting into the drum of washing machine. You can soak the leaves in a jar or pan with hot water for a few hours and keep the water as detergent. The clothes are nice soft after washing, no need fabric conditioner. You can add vinegar if water is hard and add a few drops of your choice of essential oils for the fresh smell. For more soiled clothes you can add a tea spoon of baking soda. Happy washing!
