Would this work if we made it into an oil for our own skin?
Want to get your book!
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! 🥰 I've been WANTING a good book about wild edibles as a fun hobby to teach my grown kids and grandkids. Maybe I'll order a book for each of them later too. 😃
Can you use on skin?
@@user-qb9ov6rk2t As long as you have no allergies to English Ivy, yes, you can. You may wish to moisturize afterward.
English ivy grows invasively in the US, and it's everywhere. Thanks for the tip, I can put it to good use.
First off, I am an herbalist and love this kind of thing and have never heard of this so am super excited about it. So straightforward as a process. Second, y'all are adorable and I am so glad I found this!
Great to have you join us!
You can do the same thing with horse chestnuts too 😁
@@homeiswhereourheartis The leaves of the horse chestnuts?
Yes this is lovely ☺️
@@Ponkelina No the actual conker you break it up and leave it in water to soak
How does one become an herbalist?
What a privilege it is, to watch such a lovely, cheerful, optimistic couple teaching us how to survive in nature!!!❤ THANK YOU! 😊
I use it to clean my hair too also shower with it ❤️❤️
Is it ok for sensitive skin? How is your hair after with it?
@@veronicakartchner5209 I have sensitive skin and it has not been a problem. My hair is stronger and shiny too.
Maybe just try some on your skin first to see if you have a reaction. I e used ivy to shower with too. 🥰

Thank you so much you two!! I have been using 'Reetha' (aka Indian soap nuts, from the zero waste store) and I just planted a Ceanothus [sapponin] tree in the front yard, but thanks to you, now I know that all that English Ivy in the backyard that I thought I hated can be used also:-) I call my saponin extracts 'washing water' rather than soap, because people expect the extract to look [and be-used] like our traditional fat based soaps. I find these saponin extracts to be very powerful for cleaning, when I use them on dishes they rinse off so easily, so I use less water, and there's never any water spots like regular soaps leave. Also as a laundry washing water, unless I'm washing whites, I don't even use a rinse cycle. Also, UC Berkeley did a study on plant growth and showed that gray water from all commercial detergents, even the so-called gray-water safe ones, will deter plant growth, but our saponin extracts will not negatively affect the growth of plants. So here in Southern California I can use reuse the washing water on my garden!
Wow, thank you for that comment! How are your plants doing now that you’ve had the chance to use it for a while?
Everything is greener and healthier than ever! --- we did have a lot of rain this winter. I'm also using the 'Back to Eden' method with the chipper waste as mulch, and I'm sure a lot has to do with that as well. Regarding the washing water, I have gotten rid of most of my synthetics, because I don't want to be adding nanoplastics to my soil. So I'm wearing and washing mostly cotton. Best to you 🌱🍇🍏🌞
Thank you for this comment!
O! M! G! Cannot BELIEVE I saw this! I was about to get rid of all the English ivy that I grew for years on my house because of getting I'm getting older and didn't want to deal with trimming it back several times a year! Well now it's definitely staying! Thank you for this extremely valuable info! SUBSCRIBED!
It was your destiny to see it! 😁
Great 😊
Ivy used to be made into beer, hence the ivy pole as a symbol outside all old inns.
That so?! Didn't think you could eat it: not if it contains saponins!
Isn't that a 'hop' leave, humulus lupulus, where beer is made of?
It's great you promote natural "detergents", orerather cleaning agents. It's trully necessary. I know it's long gone but let me clarify with this small note: it's not juice nor sap, but decoction. It's good to remember that difference, especially for the newbies. Juice and sap have entirely different composistion and activity. Juice would be when expressed from leaves and usually it requires diluting. Sap would be when dropped from straight a trunk - like birch or maple sap or any other tree sap. Concentration in juices & saps is way higher than in this decoction. Anyway, all the best to all and cheers to beautiful ivy!😊💚
Soap not sap he said 🧼
It always infuriates me when there is just *so* much plastic packaging in laundry soap and all that type of stuff. So this is a perfect replacement! Thank You!
Fab! It's such a great detergent, ❤️✌️
Woah.
I didn't even think about that. But I will now
I made the laundry soap and it was amazing. I used it on some muddy trousers with a special finish so I couldnt clean them with anything with enzymes in. I wish I could upload the before and after pictures I took. Thanks guys.
They have a Facebook you could try... 🙂
We did this today, with the children in our Permaculture club. So easy and really available ❤️
I am planning to do this next week with ours, we don’t have a washing machine at the nature reserve so was wondering if it could be used for anything else? Like washing the dishes for example??
Thank you for this. I have a guinea pig who loves his duvets. I try to go natural with everything when it comes to my piggy. I made small pads from mattress covers and can see when he stains it. I have gone through various soaps and can't find one suitable for him. I use vinegar to help lift stains rather than bleach and it softens his duvets and keeps static down. I live in a very rural community on northern Vancouver Island, BC., Canada and we pay enormous prices for items lije laundry soap. Next laundry day I am trying this. I collected a garbage bag of ivy vines. My yard is full of it. I don't have to start my truck. Whew hoo. Can't wait for laundry day! Omg I need a life! Lol.
WONDERFUL!!!! You could add Lavender or other essential oil like peppermint to it for a lovely fresh scent. Thank you Family!
I made some yesterday, didn't sud up the first time so I added more leaves and boiled again, fantastic result. Thank you.
I just had a memory from childhood. My elderly great grandma saying in the old days we used ivy tea to wash our clothes..... Wow been over 50 years. I have ivy in my garden I cNt wIt to try ot
I wanted to thank you again as I've been making and suing this for 3 or 4 months now and it's absolutely wonderful! xx
It works perfectly for us too 🙂
How does it do with getting the dirt out?
AMAZING! I am slightly freaking out right now about this! Lucky me I have massive amount of English ivy in my front yard here in western Canada. I guess there can be a benefit to an invasive species. I am crazy crazy allergic to chemicals, and have had a really hard time finding an affordable very natural laundry detergent. Even the “eco friendly” ones give me whole body allergic reactions. Seriously, this is a saving grace. Thank you!
😁
There are multiple benefits actually. Look up medicinal benefits, you'll be astounded.
Tis a bummer i live in Wiltshire in countryside yet its no where!
Cant wait until spring, maybe I'll find more then
Same.
The I've that grows in north America is English??? I thought it was just being passed off as such!!! Interesting!
