Very interesting on how you got them back into shape as well as preventing them from losing shape in the first place. As winter starts to move to the exits I’ll have to try this with my sweaters. Please do a home washing tutorial for ties!
This is glorious, been searching for "can you wash clothes with dish soap" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Sayoothan Telepathic Sovereignty - (just google it )? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to wash your clothes without toxic detergents without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my neighbour got excellent results with it.
Mind blown! A truly definitive guide to washing wool sweaters. Although I have researched this topic a number of times online, this is hands down the most well-researched and informative guide I have seen on this topic. Excellent! I would love to see a video on the care of linen garments and silk ties if possible. Thank you!
I've recently started buying garments to take care of for life and this is exactly the information I needed! Thank you so much for the explanations behind what works and why.
I mistakenly washed a wool zip up jacket... now it's my favorite zip up sweater b/c it fits much better. Before, it was a very large sweater that was meant to be oversized but was still 2 sizes bigger than me. It was passed down by an aunt. I wear it all the time and get compliments not stop. But I learned a very hard lesson that day, and got screamed at by my mother for ruining her deceased sister's good wool jacket :( I still feel horrible, but when my mom sees that it's my fav thing to wear to stay warm and that it actually looks great on me it makes her feel better :)
I had a long shawl that felted completely. Yes, I washed it without all these precautions, it was less than half after, couldn't even close it around my neck. Lesson learned!
Great tips thanks. I go several years before feeling the need to wash woollen sweaters. In Scotland I only wear heavy woollen sweaters during winter, under an overcoat when walking outside, its very practical and comfortable. I keep woollen sweaters well away from smoking.
Very useful, and perfect timing as I’d been putting off washing several jumpers post-winter. I knew about laying jumpers on a towel to dry, but never knew about rolling them and washing them inside a bag. I know olive oil is very versatile, but that was a new one for me!!
Nailed it, Preston! From what I have seen, too many people use hot water, a harsh wash cycle (or an agitator washing machine), or a dryer...or a combination thereof, causing the wool to shrink and become misshapen. I always handwash and rack dry, but these tips are great to know, Thank you! Another method which you may or may not have heard of makes use of fluffy snow during northern winters. The sweater is immersed in dry snow and “washed” much like you would liquid water in a hand basin. Afterwards, you can use a light bristle brush to gently remove the excess snow before drying on a rack. Wool rugs were traditionally cleaned using a similar method in northern climates during the winter season.
THANK YOU!! The wool sweater tip (to get them "back into shape") works! I used it on 3 sweaters - one a thinner merino blend, one a thicker cable-knit and the last just a 'regular' wool sweater and they all came (mostly) back to their former shape.
Just followed your instructions washing a merino wool sweater by Brooks Brothers, and it came out well. Nice and clean, no shrinkage and no felting. I used cool water in a machine set on hand wash. Thanks for this video.
I wish I watched this sooner before washing my wool sweaters. Luckily, I just washed it once and the patterns are still maintained. Unfortunately, it did shrink. Now I know how to wash it back into proper size. Thank you so very much.
Followed all of ur steps for washing a wool sweater that I bought on eBay in the washing machine. I needed to wash them as buying online u never know who or what wore the sweater before I got it lol. Everything work fantastic
Preston, I wish that I'd seen this video before I washed my Pendleton board shirts. I used cold water...but I really worked the shirts over by hand. Then I rang them out. Then I hung them on the clothes line on a hot day in the sun!!! The only thing I didnt do was set them on fire!! Unfortunately I didnt know that I could save these shirts. Knowledge is power!! I'm a Subscriber now! Thank you.
excellent video. I learned a lot, thanks! You might have mentioned the very best way to clean a sweater, or a blanket, or even a suit. It is the method that was used one hundred years ago, but is only practical if you live in a place with cold winters. You roll your garment in clean, not wet snow. Then, you lightly brush or tap most of the snow out. Then, you dry your garment on a clothes rack. This works because snowflakes have an extremely large surface, just as activated charcoal has. This absorbs any dirt or excess oils that may be between between the wool fibers.
Thank you very much, you truly covered all of the questions I've had. Just one more left; you talked about the water temperature and suggested it to be "warm", so my question is how many degrees do you suggest? Thank you.
Preston”a presentation is so enjoyable especially with his tone of voice and pace. Couple with the Raphael’s appearance in modelling some of the styles. Well done!
Another video saved. great advice, Just got 3 Ireland sweaters delivered today, Plus I have a host of others that this will help with. One trick for dress shirt Maintenence. Yellowing of Dres shirts t-shirts-- I soak in sink or tub of hot water with some Oxi Clean powder added in - for collars I use a soft brush to scrub the color a little to agitate and whiten the stains. Maybe a video on dressshirt , t shirt and tie cleaning?
Excellent video. I've watched several videos looking for this information and you are the most knowledgable and well spoken of all I've seen. I've purchased several cashmere sweaters, merino wool sweaters, and 2 wool blazers this year so I want to avoid any moth problems. I love the smell of the Laundress cedar detergent.
I always wanted to know how to take care of wool clothes because I've had a few beautiful clothes that I had to hand over because of the shrinking. Their new size was good for teens, but not for adults. Many thanks for the video 🙏
I did not know about rolling the sweaters into the mesh bag and rolling the bag too. I just put them in the washer on delicate cycle, I did not have felting with my merino sweaters. I roll to dry them though, and lay them to dry on a table.
I usually throw sweater with washing bag in delicate mode with normal detergent , and airdry on a hanger (not normal hanging, rather i fold it in half on the rod). I found it fast and effective. And for suit i just use steamer to brush it and spot wash, ive never been into dry clean place because i didnt have a car back then. Now i found my way of cleaning effective, so i dont go to dry clean store even after i got my car. I might try the wool shampoo and the rolling technique. Thanks
Great video, I hate dry cleaning my wool garments and online guides for how to do it at home are contradictory. I assume the same would apply to wool trousers?
Thank you for the info gentleman. I was panicking, "what if I ruined my newly bought woolen clothing". 😅😅😅😅😅. This was helpful full. Thank you so much ❤
This was very informative Preston. I've now bought some laundry bags. Can I please ask you and Sven advice on what brands of shoe polish you recommend to keep my dress shoes and boots looking their best?
The best, as usual. I liked in particular the method to do something I thought impossible: to return to life sweaters shrunk by mistreatment: wished I had known it, as I have thrown away quite a few (eg accidentally thrown together with the normal wash..
Preston, have you been getting tips from the Laundry Evangelist? I attended his Laundry Camp a couple of weeks ago. He had superb tips on textile care that overlap with the ones you presented. I should also comment that your presentations have improved as you have gained experience. Keep up the fine work.
Dear Mark, yes, we did get a lot of the tips from Laundry Camp at the Mall of America, and we recommend to anyone that they should go it they are at the mall. We made that suggestion in the description.
Just hand washed my hand knit Arran in lukewarm water but in the process of handling to get it to flat dry wasn't careful enough with the water weight so it has stretched. Will now have to rewash by hand in hot water to shrink and be super careful as the weight of the water plus any wringing whatsoever stretches. Very difficult garment to deal with!
Hello, thank you very much this is really helpful ❤ One question … last winter season I bought and stored a wool sweater in light grey kept it in a plastic container 😢 and a yellow stain appeared on it … i red that i can use (( Hydrogen Peroxide )) to remove that stain ? Do you think it’s safe?
I don't use any detergent if I really need to 'wash' a wool sweater, as I don't want the whiteners involved in my garment. If I do anything at all to them, I just get a clean 5 gallon bucket, put them in room temp water and aggitate gently, remove and gently press out excess water, lay on rack to dry. Also, consider reintroducing Lanolin to your wool sweaters - it helps to replace those water repellent oils that were removed during the processing of your wool sweater, such as those which use boiled wool to tighten the fiber and make more wind resistant.
Very interesting on how you got them back into shape as well as preventing them from losing shape in the first place. As winter starts to move to the exits I’ll have to try this with my sweaters.
Please do a home washing tutorial for ties!
Thanks for the suggestion, Michael; I've added it to our list!

That's interesting about the snow washing.
I'm really loving the garment care tips. Once again Preston's outfit is low key but stylish w/o being boring.
thank you. could you do blazer/jacket maintenance next?
It's on our to-do list; stay tuned! :)

Great tips, especially considering I can now bring back my old sweaters that were sadly shrunk.

Spoken like a true gentleman!
Nicely done.

Good information....no more trips to the dry cleaners for my sweaters

To restore the effectiveness of Cedar--as with shoe trees-- simply sand it with a high-grit sandpaper until the aroma is present again.

Wool is sheep hair, so yes!
