This video took me forever to make! Wanted to make sure I included every detail possible to make this one the most thorough and accurate video out on the Epiphone EJ-160e.
There is actually very little info out there on the guitar. Most videos & online forums I found mentioning any kind of history on the guitar was incorrect. Weeks of talking with Instagram members, scouring over pictures, and decoding hundreds of serial numbers to break down exact variation changes over the years is how I was able to compile this informationally-crammed video.

Legendary video Paul! Really enjoyed seeing the different epiphone EJ-160es. Wow, definitely didn’t realise how much the changed over the years and how different the headstock looked from the Gibson. Wonder if they’re easier to play. Incredible breakdown of the different models!
Thanks so much Luke!!!! When I started this video I had no idea what I was getting into with all the changes either lol
Thank you so much for your video, Paul!! The best one ever about this guitar! Thanks to your video, coupled with my own research, I pulled the trigger on a used Epi J-160e I found online at Guitar Center in Va. They posted very little info about the guitar other than “Great” and it came with a case. The price was right so I made the buy and had it shipped to my local GC. Once I got it home, I was very pleasantly surprised to see “Great” could have been “Mint” and the case was a very nice, albeit nicked-up Epi hard case. The 160e’s manufacturing date is 2022, from Indonesia. The guitar is beautiful although, oddly, it came with a prior manufacturing year’s knobs. I have since ordered the correct Gibson-style knobs. The Epi will reside next to my two Gretsch electrics, among others.
Awesome!!!! I’m glad you enjoyed it! The 2022’s are amazing guitars with all the perfect specs. Enjoy it!!
Fantastic video. Very informative and engaging. Great to see my natural EJ-160E at 06:23!
That’s awesome! That was actually my favorite pic of the natural EJ out of all the ones I could find. Those are such beautiful guitars! Great picture
I have the number #001 from 2000.
I just got the one w/out Lennon's name on it, sounds great. You can't play it through a practice amp though. You need at least a 25in speaker.
Thanks for the info! Great video!
Thank you!
Do you know where I can get an Epiphone ej-160e for cheap?
Guitar Center when they go on sale. They just had it at $399. Wait and keep checking thier site, I bet they will have sale again soon
@@guitargearconnection Ok thanks so much!
Very good, friend. I think they closed the production of these, now that i'm able to buy,
My john lennon signature came with a mini-humbucker stock
Felt good that my ex guitar got featured in this video :D
Awesome! Usually on the best of the best I try making into my videos lol. Which one was it? What time did it come up?
Very good! Epiphone Casino was revamped this year too?
It was but only thing that changed appears to be the back and sides not being sunburst and the original 60’s style brownish color
Does anyone know why these doesn’t sell in Europe?
Either way all J160e’s Gibson or Epiphone are all belta guitars
I have a 2009 model, how do I know if it's Chinese or Indonesian? Great video!
Thank you! Primarily the serial number will help decode it. That year range had both of them producing equal amounts of guitars and they used most of the same hardware
Recently bought this but the signal is sooo low through a pa, and my vox. I need suggestions..new pickup? Preamp? Any help.would.be appreciated.
Very strange! Could be some kind of defect possibly with the pickup, or a grounding issues.
I have 3 John Lennon’s
3 different manufactures …The only strings that work through any Vox amp for true BeaTle sound IMO are the GHS White Bronze .012 -.054 light .. have used D’addarios Elixirs and others … has to do with the P 100 humbuckers . If I wish to play Beat tunes just acoustically , any other decent acoustic strings will sound great …
That s from my experience and well trained ear for Early to mid BeaTles tunes ..
You need to use strings with a nickel or monel winding. The wound strings will sound weak and unbalanced with the unwound strings if they are bronze, since only the core will be picked up by the pickup.
Ty! where did you buy your 2023 model?
Right at Guitar Center! They had them on the shelf. Sweetwater & Musicians Friend will have them as well.
It's not listed either on Epiphone website or Guitar center, Sweetwater and Musician's friend.
Where can I find the guitar for purchase nowadays?
Guitar Center, Musician’s Friend, Sweetwater, Reverb, and eBay.
What’s the best year to get then?
2018+ technically since it’s the closest to the Gibson. 2015-2017 are just as good, just has year stamp on back of headstock. Those are the only ranges I would stay with if your looking to get as close to the Gibson as you can.
Where can I buy the Best Epiphone J-160?
Well, from what I’m hearing, the stopped producing them again. Definitely Reverb or EBay for a used one. But hopefully they continue production again!
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate that. Could you suggest the Best one to get if I were to purchase one? Thanks again, Doug@@guitargearconnection
I have a 2009 Chinese model. On the back of the head, appears "Used" carved in the wood. Wtf?? Why?? Rgds from Brazil!
It could have been the manufacture marking it as a second hand model or a demo version.
I've played a 60's era vintage Gibson J-60 and it was not good. Super heavy weighted and sounded like plywood.
I’ve heard of some not playing the best! And they definitely have a very unique sound
The current day epiphones are actually built better than what the Beatles would've used back in the 60's.
I just purchased a used one today Ej160e # 22032303368 what year was mine produced?
Also My favorite album is Rubber Soul Capitol album, I’m wanting my guitar to have more of that sound, what kind of strings would you recommend for these to produce that classic Beatles Acoustic sound!
Thank you
