  • In this excerpt from Episode 3 of The Pick-Up, presented by Vans, we field test the "one board, all waves" theory. Last year, Jon Pyzel told us that John Florence rides the same boards at all three Vans Triple Crown of Surfing venues - Haleiwa, Sunset, and Pipeline. We wanted to see if such a task was possible for someone who isn’t the literal spawn of Poseidon.
    So, we put our newest Hawaiian editor and VTCS entrant Kū’i’o’okalani Young to work, and he tested John’s one-board theory across the various playing fields.
    Finally, we finish off this excerpt with Holly Wawn’s Stab Surfer Of The Year picks.

    Looks like the AM2s were too much fin for that board on the smaller stuff. Looked sticky. I would imagine a 1 board quiver would still require a bit of adjustment with the fins. A fin with a bit more release would have looked good at Hale'iwa.

    The Gilmore title was BS. Rank 5 surfers should not get shots at titles. Sorry. Riss should’ve won it it based on the point system that has set the title standard for a long time. How many seasons did Slater end up in top 5 with no chance at a title? By this new lowered woke bar that was set, we must give Kelly 20% more titles for every year he qualified in the top 5. But realistically, we would likely have to give Kelly 50% more titles because his odds of winning are probably better than the average 1 in 5! It’s a shame that WSL has ruined what it means to win a title by cheapening the system despite precedent!! Love Steph, but she’s only an 8 time champ if we retroactively give Kelly 20% more titles, otherwise titles don’t mean shit; they’re like inflated dollars now, WORTHLESS!

      @mikeuptegrove Год назад +1

      @@JeremiahAlphonsus ha ha. Yeah, that was pretty disappointing too. But I guess he had the points, which at least represents a certain standard. But I agree, Tahiti was a joke for the WSL in general. They had an agenda at the contest for sure, despite Toledo deciding he wasn’t going to surf it. Robinson got robbed early on despite surfing the best. I was glad Migi fought as hard as he did, cause since they couldn’t set up a Kelly vs Hedgy final, they had Kauli as the pre-determined local winner. I was glad Migi made their plan impossible and made them give him the win by force.

      @@JeremiahAlphonsus he had to. They had favorites and an agenda for sure. I was so happy to see Pupo throw a wrench in it. I still think Jack did most critical and technical surfing out there that day, but he made serious stuff look so easy he was underscored. They gave points to people who were able to hold onto bad takeoffs because of drama factor and neglected to properly score guys with better selection and precision, like Jack. Jack had a wave that was gnar and he shot it surgically from way deep inside and rode up and over the foam ball so precise it made it look too easy. Jack was the all around best surfer of the year, not Toledo, for reasons you pointed out above.
