  • Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence starring David Bowie Explained
A movie review of the Japanese, British co-production, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. This is a wonderful film directed by Nagisa Ōshima and with music by Ryuichi Sakamoto who also acts in the film as Capt. Yonoi. This is a really great film that explores LGBTQ themes but also expands the love between two men to the love of two cultures (Japan and the West) and love of mankind. The musical score is fantastic is very memorable and catchy. The production design and camera work of this film is fantastic and David Bowie as Maj. Jack "Strafer" Celliers and Tom Conti as Lt. Col. John Lawrence also put on excellent performances in this movie. If you enjoyed this film let me know what you think of the film and what you think the meaning of it is.

It's been some time since I last saw this movie but I wouldn't say there are any sexual or romantic love undertones, more agape-kind of love. The soldiers respect each other and I think the long looks weren't lustful or anything like that, but seeing the man behind the uniform. Both are men of honor, even though their codes differ partly, but with a level of universal love for anyone they believe will do what they both think is the right thing. I think it's in a way before it's time with the imperialistic mindset effectively being toxic masculinity, where show of force is needed to gain respect, when our main duo show their true power by treating each other with respect rather than animosity we see too often.
I remember this flying over the heads of many guys in our company when we watched this. We had an excercise where we were in charge of a simulated POW camp and it turned to Stanford prison in hours, which unfortunately proves that one point you made about love being default over hate isn't quite true.

Actually I think the simulation does kind of match because what I meant to say was that love is the default for individuals interacting, but societally when there is pressure from others we devolve into hate, which is why you have gangs, war, etc. thanks so much for the thoughtful comment!
