Didi by Sean Wang | Long live the family drama | Movie Review
Didi directed by Sean Wang (2024), is a quiet family drama disguised as a coming-of-age comedy. While there are all the classic hallmarks of the coming-of-age film within Didi, the part of the film that feels the most significant is the relationship that Sean Wang develops between Didi and his female family members, how he relates to his grandmother (Nai Nai), mother, and sister. This is the aspect of the film that resonated the most with me, however, the beauty of this film is that it can resonate with so many in various aspects of their lived experience, for example, it could be meaningful to you if you were an Asian American that grew up in Southern California, or if you were in Junoir...

"The Bear" Season 3 was disappointing (and they knew it) | Review

Is "The Bear" Season 3 bad? "The Bear" Season 3 was disappointing and I think the creators knew it. So much of the plot is centered around how hard it is to achieve greatness and worries about how to keep the magic of creation. The show The Bear does this in the context of their new restaurant but I believe the creators and creatives on this show were trying to communicate to us the audience ab...

The new Netflix series "The 8 Show" has obvious parallels to another popular Korean dark comedy, suspense, drama on Netflix - Squid Game. Is "The 8 Show" better? In some ways I think yes. I think "The 8 Show" has a better critique of class and economic inequality than Squid Game did. The metaphors and themes explored are more interesting and accurate. There are some flaws with the new Korean dr...
"Ripley" on Netflix Reminds Us What Prestige TV Is | Review

Ripley, streaming now on Netflix, reminds us what prestige TV is. In the early 2000s there was this idea that TV was going to be the salvation of narrative visual work. That promise never really materialized but every once and a while a show comes along that is so good it reminds us how great TV can truly be, something cinematic and artistic on every level. The editing, directing, writing and a...

The Netflix "Three Body Problem" show ruined the books. As an avid lover of the Remembrance of Earth's Past Series by Liu Cixin, I was nervous for how Netflix and the Game of Thrones creators would adapt this book into a show. @@MintVolcano yes, the way you talked about the books made me realise they're much deeper, and more philosophical (qualities one expects from the science fiction genre) but I was worried if the Netflix series has spoiled the plot too much for me. Anyway, thanks for your recommendation. I'll definitely give the book series a shot.

Just some cultural background information here: 1. Traditionally, brides arrived in sedans. So it's very unusual that Songlian arrived at the Chen's on her own. The Chens did send a sedan but she did not take it, which could be an indication that these old "customs" did not mean much to her at that time. Nevertheless, in the course of the story, as "customs" or "rules" have been repeated, she had benifitted and suffered from these rules. Before she knew it, she herself also fell for them. 2. Maids could be married by their masters, contrary to what's been said in the film. This explains the maid's daydream and hostility. It's either the Chens' household rules or Mr. Chen's personal reason that he did not marry the maid. 3. The background music with cymbals, especially at the scenes where the wife and the concubines wait for their husband's decision, is common for fighting scenes in Chinese operas including Taiwanese opera. To me, this could be a symbol of the concubines' fight for the husband or power. 4. (I learned this from other Chinese videos about the movie. The commentator sure knows more about Chinese operas than me.) The sections of Chinese opera Meishan sang and the stories behind them imply what might happen and Songlian's situation. 5. Traditionally, sons got better treatment than daughters. Mothers who gave birth to sons would also be treated better than mothers who gave birth to daughters. Ranks among siblings were also important: youngers could not disobey elders; elder sons got better chance of inheriting family wealth than younger sons. Daughters usually didn't get a penny because after marriage they no longer belonged to the family. This explains why the wife was able to stay out of the fights (her son had grown up and was already running business) and why Zhuoyun wanted to sabotage Meishan when they both got pregnant. 6. In Chinese culture, red is a color for celebrations, whereas white is the color for funerals. Spring is regarded as the season of birth, growth and life. In the winter section we see snow and deaths of Yan'er (the maid) and Meishan. A lot of commentating videos in Chinese have interpreted the absence of a spring section as "lack of hope in the Chen household," which I agree: once you're in the house, you're in the game. Even if you win, there will always be a new concubine to take your place. Therefore, there is no winner. It all depends on the husband's preference. 7. Wives were usually of a higher position than concubines. They were also responsible for household issues. This also partly explains why the wife can stay out of the fight and why the decision for Yan'er's punishment rests with her.

I loved it, I saw it as a major commentary about life and social structures. People are upset they didn't get the happy, uplifting story we usually get, and thats disappointing. It mimicked life and the social issue that without the resources, it's almost impossible to change your life, the poor are always losing and the rich always win. Unless the poor stoop to the moral level of the rich, nothing will ever change in this world.

this video is pretty much nitpicks and just wrong, you can't call the first ep "cliche" or "not engaging", it laid out the entire plot & mysteries to be solved all in front of you & displayed the comedy charm it had, there was nothing wrong with it, expecting more is just stupid. tv shows aren't movies, they're always slower, people managed to watch GoT and it's one of the most loved yet slow TV shows on the planet, no one is going to shit themselves over 1 episode being "bad" (even though it wasn't) then drop the entire series, unless they have never watched a tv show before. you compliment the build up and how each episode gets better, i promise you this would not be a thing if they did more with episode 1, you're pretty much contradicting yourself > you hate how episode 1 didn't have enough going on for you > but you love every episode after? it was literally linear pacing where in each episode something new was unraveled, there was no sudden boost in pacing or sudden change in story, the plot was the same from ep 1 till the end. each episode progressed the same, so you're just speaking nonsense. prematurely judging the show is just a fault of yours, not a problem with the show the language shit is another nitpick and almost entirely irrelevant to the show, this is clearly directed towards english people. just because it's based on taiwan and triads doesn't mean it has to be in their language or situated in taiwan, they quickly abandon taiwan and move to an english speaking state, this should've been the first obvious sign that this is clearly for english speakers. they did fit in non-english portions which was immersive and reminded you where they're really from, most people watching don't speak taiwanese or know shit about taiwan nor triads, so majority does not care about it or notice its supposed flaws, we were all watching for the plot, not the accuracy in culture and language 😭this would just be an extra minor detail to maintain and effort that could be spent elsewhere on more meaningful aspects of the show. people who're from taiwan or know shit about triads or taiwan's culture can dislike it, but they can't act like that tiny factor should bring the show down or be involved in why it got cancelled, it was executed well enough and believable, asking for more on top of everything else it's doing is unreasonable, it's not a fucking tv show + documentary with a billion dollar budget lmao, you can only find so many good actors that can speak good english while also speak any mandarin at all or whatever they were speaking the one thing i agree on with you is the kid acting the young chairleg scene, that mf is NOT an actor 🤣🤣other than that, it feels like you were reaching for straws and just nitpicking nonsense and saying shit like "cliche" "not engaging" then not expanding on what you meant by this, just "oh yeah cliche this cliche that!" like dawg.. it's a triad/gang series.. they're not gonna be fighting aliens and fly like superman, the word cliche cannot be used to describe a show that does something correctly just because you've seen a shit ton of similar thing based on the same thing, then basically admit ignorance to what triads act like, like what? 😭😭"this was cliche!" "we don't really know how triads act" the show works within the world it created and did it really well in reality, the only reason this show doesn't get a season 2 is the advertising was bad, they had a large budget (clearly), these 2 things don't mix well and resulted in poor viewership meaning poor returns on their investment. i literally got this show recommended to me yesterday... THIS SHIT CAME OUT DAMN NEAR A YEAR AGO!!💀💀this should tell you how BADLY they handled the show in terms of actually getting on the screens of their viewers they had a great product and said "hey! let's hide it! 🤫" "wait.. 😱!?!? it didn't earn anything after we hid it? 🤯" "CANCEL IT!! 🤬" absolute clowns these netflix people 🤡🤡all about numbers and shit, but they can't even advertise their highest potential movies or shows? then they have the audacity to cancel it like they didn't see this coming, good one netflix, i'm paying a monthly subscription to get dog shit continued then all the good shit cancelled, wtf are these clowns doing, it's just dog shit tv shows and old tv shows then the few good ones just never see the light of day again

It’s great you like the show but I disagree about the language thing. It’s a personal pet peeve of mine, if you can take time to train the fighting you can take time to train the language. If you don’t mind it that’s fine but everyone has their own points that care about when watching something. Personally I think it’s a bit of a bigger deal than you think this show was trying to be authentic but it failed a little in that area. Thanks for the comments!

I might've been predisposed to enjoy it since I'm a '95 baby from the Bay Area and a lot of the details rung very true for me, even though I am not Chinese or Taiwanese. Thanks for sharing your voice and introducing my favorite movie to even more people in different countries. However, I almost disagree with all of the points you mention, but I am biased because I love this movie. The one-eyed cop shouldn't have much screen time because 1. He is not the main focus of the movie, otherwise, it would just be your stereotypical Cop vs Crimal Hollywood film. 2. The movie is trying to show the incompetence of the police (turn a blind eye), which is where the protagonist comes into play. I believe the lack of a romancing plot and screen time is 100% intentional and I love it, otherwise, it would just be a cheap drama. There is no romancing element like kissing, flirting, or making love between the protagonist and the girl (only friendship), because it's precisely what the writer wants. The protagonist is just another violent monster who just happens to save her, not a savior prince who does it for love or justice. His motivation to kill the snake is purely based on the weird fixation on glory and vengeance.

I really like your argument about the relevance of this kind of movie today. I also get that it can be effective in evoking emotion for certain audiences. When I watched it, though, I didn’t find it as moving as I wanted to. I couldn’t fully connect with the main character-he came across as a bit flat in terms of his motivations and conflicts. I think that’s also why a lot of people feel like it doesn’t bring anything new to the table. The protagonist’s struggles don’t feel all that original. That said, for people who haven’t seen many classic dramas, this could still hit harder. As a first feature film, it shows that the director knows his craft and understands the indie filmmaking scene. Hopefully, this helps him secure a spot in the industry where he’ll have more freedom to write and direct more original works.

I also found taking "talented" out of the title interesting. The movie version is implied to be talented, he plays classical music, impersonates well, picks language quickly. A lot of these traits are shared by the series version. I actually think the series emphasizes way more than the movie how talented Ripley actually is. It's explicitly shown how Ripley is more talented than Dickie in painting, more talented than Marge in writing, very quick at picking up not only Italian but Sicilian dialect, he in fact is deeply moved by Mina's music and Caravaggio. Damon Ripley came to like Jazz but never had an affinity with it. Despite the crimes having to be reactive, i think the final act of trickery was very clever with forethought. That letter to the landlady was planted quite ahead of time. The series does emphasise however just how difficult it is to get rid of a body, hence it may seem like series Ripley is a little less "competent".

Yes I think any basketball fan understood the inspiration/character design of sakuragi. Thats one of the reasons i find this anime/manga so unique. He stays the underdog through the entire story. No power ups, no new hidden techniques. Just a guy who is in love with the game and plays his heart out every game. Through sheer tenacity and grit playing his part against players who are; bigger, more experienced and more skilled. I love that about his character

The best part of Sakuragi's character growth arc was he didn't start off loving the game at all and only began to play basketball to simp for a girl in the most literal sense of the term, and the first time he actually lost a game and blamed himself and shedded tears of sadness and regret for not trying harder/doing better and thus leading to him shaving his head into the Rodman hairstyle was one of his defining growth moments which really moved the audience. Lastly at the last match it came back full circle when he said to Haruko that he loves basketball only this time he actually meant it from the bottom of his heart, compared to the first time when he said it to her which in the first chapter of the story when it was a lie only to impress her. Sakuragi's character arc is what peak shounen manga looks like - the complete package containing the three essential elements of passion, courage and perserverance which defines this segement of the medium, and that's why it's a classic.

Loads of bullshit. Not everything is about CCP and Chinese government.

I just finished my journey through Yang's career that started with a Christmas Day screening of Yi Yi a few months ago then went in chronological order from the beginning. This was such a wonderful experience and capping it off with Mahjong was so much more rewarding than the internet would have had me believe. I just wanted to say how surprised I was by this and A Confucian Confusion, kept thinking how does he get from here to Yi Yi until that last scene. If this were the final word from Yang it would be perfect, but then to know at the end (or beginning) of this circuit is Yi Yi. Man. The thing that keeps reverberating in my head is the amount of times in Mahjong there's a warning about kissing! Don't kiss! It will ruin everything! It even comes true for Hongkong. The movie is constantly daring itself to end the way it does but makes whats probably the most conventional way to end a movie feels like such an shocking stunt! Thanks for your video, I really enjoyed your thoughts on this.

In the anime Sakuragi is high school gangster that joined the basketball team because he has a crush on the Goliath sister.
