The Hong Kong protest side plot in the background highlights how expats are eerily detached, and how unequal and divided Hong Kong is. I know some experts here simply did not care about politics in general, or distaste local people for being ‘too political’. So I think the show did a job in portraying the expat perspective of the protest. But I do agree that the mum and son side plot line was bluntly placed.
Haven't watched it. It's impossible to make a credible HK show (cinema or television) at the moment while pretending the political background doesn't exist, or is merely a traffic disruption.
What did you think of Expats?

Well they did address it more than that but they still didn’t integrate it into the story in a way that made sense imo
