I saw the flashback sequences as surreal dream sequences from Jack's point of view. He saw himself as a child in the first part, so he imagines himself as he was when he was 12. When he is a schoolboy senior, he sees himself as mature young man, old enough to know better, which is why he imagines himself as he presently is, as if he hasn't really changed since that time. This is supported during the dream sequence where he apologises to his brother, which never happened. All of the flashbacks are Jack imagining the past through compromised eyes, rather than as it was. It's how he sees himself in his memories.

Hay man, Thanks for stopping by!
Oh I totally agree with your interpretation there, I think Jack is absolutely envisioning his own past with a skewed take on how the events happened. and I think some of them more his desire for how he *wished* they'd happened rather than how they actually went down. it's arguably one of the better elements of the movie really because it gives Jack an added depth of character that makes him all more endearing on rewatchs as you realise a lot of his behaviours have been driven by what happened between him and his brother. It is still a bit odd though to see Bowie in his mid 30's running around in a school boy uniform xD though I appreciate the sentiment they're aiming for with it. ultimately; it's a very powerful work that I really need to rewatch again sometime soon!

Great review for a great film. I watched this for the first time with my ma last Christmas after having known about the infamous title from the soundtrack with the same name for a couple years. I'm gonna make sure my partner and my uncle watch it as well this Holiday season

I saw this last christmas for the first time too and it absolutely blew me away. with everything that had gone on in 2020 it hit quite close to home. I hope your partner and uncle enjoy it! "I have a bad habit. People recommend me movies, they beg me to watch them, and I just sit on them for years and years."
    You don't say.

Great review of what sounds like an interesting, nuanced take on morality, fairness, loyalty, justice, and more. Thanks!

No mention of Australia's own Jack Thompson when discussing cast? Shame on you sir. Oh well with such a stellar cast, someone was gonna get left behind.
Love the movie. Love the soundtrack. Sounds like I'll need to import the arrow Bluray down under.

Ooft! That IS something I should have picked up on! Jack Thompson is phenominal in this! his bullish performance and regimented take on the "Englishman who thinks he owns the place" is a definite highlight of this and the film would be much MUCH poorer without him! I can definitely recommend the Arrow Blu if you can import it, the PQ is astounding and theres a raft of extras that really hit the spot in better understanding the symbolism in the film :)

"Bored or fed up?" I try to decide which one I am on a daily basis. Once I figured it out I popped in Stone Cold with Brian Bozworth. Then once again that struggle reared its ugly head. Very profound sir.

I personally find the hardest part of the morning is deciding which of the 2 I usually settled for "Morose' as a happy medium and then ride the agitation through to lunchtime when I have something fun. after that im foot loose and fancy free!
