I love how this song is almost written like a love song, but instead of being about a girl it's about a guy who sells you drugs. Just like how a girl could make you feel good, a drug dealer gives you guaranteed good feelings and "anything you want" for the right price. It's a hateful, toxic relationship that might ruin your friendships but the drugs make you not care, and that's what this song is talking about. Absolutely genius songwriting.
I realized, just enjoying this kind of music,"this year I lost some friends",about 1980,I did notice.A sad parting. They went right in their Izods and topsiders and I went left in my biker jacket and Levi's.
This song has the same rythm as a cadence from the Army. On our last long hike, in Basic Training, I was truly running out of steam, and equated pain with drugs, got it in my head, and sang this song to myself as motivation, to keep going... Step to the rhythm, quietly, step, step, step... When I noticed one of my Drill Sergeants marching next to me, listening to a song he liked. For a whole long while, over and over, and I made it, when I didn't think I would. It was kinda cool.
The intro is what realy makes this song incredible, the guitar solo aint bad either, what a bloody good album, with this under appreciated gem a major highlight.
London Calling is truly a genius piece of work especially being a double album, so many flavors of stuff on here and it’s all rooted in punk rock, it took me a bit To get used to all these songs when I first heard it but it’s such a great display of work realy

This is my absolute favorite from the London Calling lp. Which is one of the finest punk records of all time. The cover alone is classic. Just flat out friggin ansttt.
so many songs on this album which never get any radio play, unfortunately. This and The Card Cheat, for me, are the two that deserve much more recognition.

Listening to this song and album makes me very happy. It's great when musicians take sad and serious topics and make songs that are empowering and uplifting.
[Verse 1] Well, I got a friend who's a man (who's a man) What man? The man who keeps me from the lonely, the only He gives me what I need (what you need?) What you got? I need it all so badly [Chorus] Oh, anything I want he gives it to me Anything I want he gives it but not for free It's hateful And it's paid for And I'm so grateful to be nowhere [Verse 2] This year I've lost some friends (some friends) What friends? I dunno, I didn't even notice You see, I gotta go out again (again) My friend I gotta see that main man [Chorus] Oh, anything I want he gives it to me Anything I want he gives it but not for free It's hateful And it's paid for And I'm so grateful to be nowhere [Verse 3] I killed all my nerves (my nerves) What swerves? I can't drive so steady And already I've lost my memory (my mind) Behind I can't see so clearly [Chorus] Oh, anything I want he gives it to me Anything I want he gives it but not for free Oh, anything I want he gives it to me (Anything I want he gives it to me) Anything I want he gives it, but not for free (Anything I want he gives it to me) Anything I want, anything I want

Excellent song, excellent album and excellent band from one of the most important eras of music. I vividly remember driving from Houston to Dallas with a buddy of mine when this song came on. We were in his piece of shit ‘77 Silverado listening to one of his CDs, and the opening of this song hit me like a freight train. I’ve loved this band ever since.
I remember buying this album on vinyl back in the good old pre-CD and internet days. Great contrast in tracks on all four sides of the album. Paul Simonon a vastly underrated bass player, too. Probably the band's masterpiece album - but I still love tbe energy of the first album - and the mini- album of 'Blackmarket Clash' when they were first starting to move into reggae-style music; if you discount the cover version of Junior Murvin's 'Police and Thieves' on the first album !

That movement is called "post-punk revival", all the 2000s indie bands were actually post-punk revival. The Clash are a post-punk band. So yeah there's a connection. But it's not because this is ahead of its time. It's because every 20 years the cycle repeats.
"oh anything I want, He gives it to me, He gives it but not for free. I must be hateful in a world full of spite" .......... Anything I want He gives it for free.....
Is that a humming vocal in the beginning? The chorus sounds like an avalanche. I can’t imagine people on heroin, dancing to this. Mick’s solo bursts sound like an angry drug dealer.
you can never be late to good music! everyone is born in different time periods, you can discover back catalogues of any artist or band who exists out there at any time :))
What about David Lee Roth & Michael Anthony. Michael Anthony is an EXCELLENT Back-Up Singer. Try the song “Ain’t Talking Bout Love.” And -- What about Michael Stipe & Mike Mills. Mike Mills is one of the best background vocalists. Try the song “These Days.”
Love every song on this album. Forty years later and it still makes me want to bounce off walls like I'm twenty again.
