If you are after any recommendations:
For the moss - scrape the worst of it and apply 'wet and forget' (or buy bulk Benzalkonium Chlorine 'BAC' in 50% concentration and water it down to 10% which is what wet and forget comes in).
For the internet - when your land line goes in grab a 3rd party router that plays nicely with dual internet connections and plug both connections into it. They will load balance between the two and you can also set up traffic rules like putting gaming traffic via the land line and less latency sensitive stuff like web or video via the star link. Ubiquiti can do it but there are other (potentially cheaper) solutions available.
If the speed on virgin was 90mb and you pay for 1000, it’s probably a bad Ethernet cable
You're on the right track. Starlink as uplink only and decent wifi, with some cat6. From a wifi engineer who'd like to be a spark, to a spark who wants to do networking!!
That is very expensive. Here in France we pay only €40 per month for Starlink. I have had it for a couple of years now.
The fast speed seems to degrade after a few months and you need to reboot it. After a power outage, it can take a few hours for it all to realign too.
UK subscription seems very expensive - here in Spain we pay 40€ a month (plus 9€ tax to the government for the airspace 😅). Service has been generally excellent.
Installed a fair few of the starlink kits now Nick around the west mids! Fantastic bit of kits. We usually use ubiquity products (AP’S) and seem the be the perfect match for each other 🤙🏼
I recommend Ubiquit APs. They’re a buy, once cry once type thing. Stay away from mesh systems, they’re only problems.
Get a good hardwired setup going with ubiquit and then put the starlink into bridge mode
Long before Cvid, we were working and studying from home. One of the main criteria when either renting or buying a house is the internet connection and mobile connectivity. We always make it a point to check or ask previous tenants if they're around and will discount any with poor internet and mobile signals.
Hi nick. Use decos myself been really reliable. You also need to move your router out of loft onto landing as deco will struggle as I have a very similar set up with a network switch in loft.
Nice solution, I live a rural village and pay £75 per month for gigaclear cable so your price is comparable and you won’t have to wait for them to dig up the road if a fault develops!
Nick… Looks like a brilliant solution to your internet. Look forward to seeing all the progress.👍
Great video sounds like some exciting times ahead. Can’t wait to see the videos.
I had the same issue at my moms house having no FTTH so I got Starlink her. Bought the 2nd gen when it came out and works perfectly the only thing I will say is that you will need to remove it out of the loft as when it gets too hot it stops working. I am think of buying a thermostat plug and fan in order not to have to ask mom to switch it off for 30 minutes every now and then
Just use 5g and get a long range antenna. £20 a month with Smarty for unlimited 5g
If you have 5G coverage this is the way of you can’t get actual fibre.
Any budget 5g antennas / routers that work well?
Ive had it for a year now no other option its pricey but cant grumble with the speeds for what i need
Star link on the far right of your house.
Did nazi this comment coming.
Perfect opportunity to get other youtubers round and use your house to make there vids, partridge exterior cleaning to jet wash the roof
For your loft conversion, worth speaking with other RUclipsrs like Build with A&E, Build it with Rob Loft Conversion Specialist and/or DJMoore Loft Conversion Specialist.
Good to see your feeling better nick let’s go!
Too expensive for me. I use a 5G router with a SIM card. I get full signal all over the house and fantastic speeds. It's a great price too for unlimited data. No contract.
What sim card you use
@@carlg1452I’m looking to do the same, currently have virgin media internet(only) but was thinking of getting the three home broadband. £21 per month. But supposedly my area only gets 4g not 5g is it worth the risk…
And what 5G CPE / Router you are using...?
Mesh wifi extender is probably not ideal if what you are looking for is the best wifi speed, what you want is a wifi access point you can just run a poe ethernet cable to so it get power and fast network connectivity to wherever you put it.
Most AP's work in mesh mode too if you have multiple ones but that cuts your speed down badly. They basically route your connection to the closest wired access point if the can't send it down their own poe line.
The router you get from your supplier is limited on how many concurrent connections it can handle (I suspect it’s done on purpose). That means all the phones, tablets, computers, smart speakers, TV etc can connect but only about 7 can connect together at any one time. When another device wants to connect, one of the currently connected devices drops, this is why the TV will buffer when someone strikes up Google on their phone. A mesh system will get around this issue and is definitely the way to go.
thats just not true
@ do you want to explain what’s not true about it? I’ll tell you my findings. My TV used to buffer and I couldn’t work out why, then I realised it happened as soon as my son came home and his phone connected to the WIFI. I spoke to Virgin and they told me I had to upgrade to a later router, when I asked why they told me the router I had could only handle a certain amount of concurrent connections. I’ve bought a mesh system, the main node is connected to the router (the one virgin told me needed to be upgraded) and now, no buffering, WiFi is now whole of house, the blink cameras are all online and no one is bothering me now that their device(s) are suffering with bad connections. You’ll need to go some to convince me that’s not true, but over to you, I’m interested to read your reply.
@@telfordcs That's just not how any of this works. You're still consuming the same amount of data which means you're consuming the same amount of network packets. No router in the world has a concurrent connections limit - network packets are sent and received as they come in (regardless of whether you use a mesh system or not). Memory limitation in the router may have been a thing but again, just because you're proxying the network packets through a mesh system before they hit the router doesn't change anything in that regard - same number of network packets. Also, the sheer lunacy of thinking that loading the google homepage consumes enough data to disrupt other devices is beyond the pale.
@ you might want to do a little googling before you stick by your answer. You are forgetting that broadband suppliers want you to upgrade and so throttle their service where they can. I was offered an upgrade for extra £££ and told that was the only way to solve the issue. Having a mesh system has solved my issue.
@@telfordcs network packets contain header information which is linked to unique device(mac address, ip address). A mesh does not change any of this. You are talking nonsense.
It's getting better all the time. Latency can be an issue as you said.. gaming reasonable tbh
Some areas with poor physical services have WISP (wireless internet service provider)
Work on a similar concept to starlink/satalite Internet, but the provider connection point isnt moving around it's located somewhere near by with dedicated fibre and then wireless transmission to your house. Could have lower latency and better speeds. I dont know how it would compare on price though as WISPs are generally local companies not multinational giants.
So they can get high speed internet up into outer space but not to the end of your road?. Outstanding! this Country still runs on Steam
Try Western Australia. You get speeds up to 10x faster than us.
Might be a private estate, they are a total PITA for telcos to deploy too.
Excellent. I’ve learnt a lot. Thanks
Hello Winnie the Pooh!
We have fitted a couple of these and I think the speeds aren’t as good as they say, will be good to hear a review over time to see how you get on
Due to the over the top fire regs and expense it's not worth converting lofts anymore in my opinion.
Escape Routes: A protected (enclosed and fire-protected ) escape route (usually the staircase) must lead to a final exit.
Fire Doors: All doors on the escape route must be fire-rated
If you can add an extension that is more economical and adds more value I think.
I tend to agree. Apart from the fire regulations, which are non trivial, the structural issues are a problem as well. The current flooring will not be acceptable as it will have been laid on the ceiling joists which are not considered strong enough for a 'living space' floor. You will therefore have to install new larger timbers for a new floor. As that roof construction is cross braced there will be a need to install the equivalent of load bearing purlins and change the structure to accommodate. There will also be a need to reduce the height to incorporate appropriate insulation.
I live in a 1960's bungalow with conventional purlin roof construction and great height. When the Architect planned out a living space conversion it became clear that adding a room was a very costly exercise and I would lose a third of a downstairs bedroom to provide the necessary fixed stair access to the hall/outside door (this is where being a bungalow I had an advantage in terms of the emergency egress requirements). His recommendation was to just floor the existing out and use the space for storage. 😉😉😉😉😉😉
@@barrieshepherd7694are you seriously complaining that not being able to use ceiling joist as a floor is overreach!? Even if you ignored it the deflection of the over stressed ceiling g joists would mean your ceilings would always be cracking.
@@edc1569 No the opposite I'm pointing out the necessary constraints that many people are not aware of.
Necessary evil if you live anywhere remote. I was on a BT copper line with around 8 Mbps down and lucky to get 1 Mbps up, with no other wired alternative. Took the plunge and went over to Starlink nearly 3 years ago. I get on average 190 Mbps down and 20Mbps up and have no reliability issues except for a seized motor on the dish which they sent a new dish straight out no questions. Latency isn't great for gaming but the whole setup has been great. Shame I'm lining Elon's pockets though.
Great video Nick, TP link Deco is a game changer, i just got it after paying 500mbps BT and not getting that- plus no dead spots.
Hope you include lots more footage of your house renovations. Great channel.
Great vid, but no pics of the finished mount?
You’re one of two RUclipsrs I follow whose pet is named after me 😂 great videos man
Agree - this channel is great for me. Who is the other one?
Really enjoying the new house stuff Nick. Let’s hope some sponsors get on board so you can fit some cool gadgets n stuff
The antenna reminds me of the 'Squarial' used by BSB in the 90's.
Why take out the satellite dish/aerial as surely if you stick with those it would reduce the load on your broadband.
Looking forward to you working on your home. Best wishes.
Used a lot of on the West Coast and Islands of Scotland, where there is no fibre etc.
Are you taking 5mg of magnesium supplement with your adhd meds? I just started after 30 years on meds, and ut's a game changer. Much more focused.
It's a shame you can't get community fibre. I pay £26pm for 1gig. I currently get 927 down and 860 up via wifi.
Joy of city living 😊
@edc1569 about the only joy 😂
Great video 👍🏻Surly being satellite based the trees shouldn’t make a difference? and I know nothing about this subject just asking 😂👍🏻
trees do effect a satelite signal especially if they are wet
£75 per month is an absolute ripp off here in the UK....only €40 in France.
Product may be good but absolutely would not be putting any money in Musk’s pocket. Not supporting any of his companies with his part in what is basically an American coup.
Also not forgetting the whole saluting thing.
I bet hes gutted 🙄
Each to their own.
That’ll show him.
@ 😂
Nut job
Great video Nick, look forward to many more on house.
Starlink in the UK makes sense if you can’t get actual glass fibre to your home. I’d look at 5G solutions with a proper antenna before I’d look at Starlink as a last resort.
I have Starlink absolutely brilliant best thing I’ve ever done. I live in a remote area.
Ask your brother about getting an opensense or pfsense router installed, then you can limit the speeds everyone can us to ensure you have speed for the youtube stuff, other routers do this its called Quality of Service, but as your brother is an IT person I bet he would jump at the chance to install a solution for you
Amazon are in the early stages of developing a satellite broadband service. No word on pricing yet except that it will be "competetive and affordable". They are advertising speeds from 100Mb/s to 1Gb/s. Only in the US at the minute for testing but Ofcom have just granted them a licence for the UK so it should be coming later in 2025. Its called project Kuiper.
Very interesting video Nick, can i have your trees once you have chopped them up 😀
No to Starlink, supporting Adolf Twitler

I came here looking for this. ❤ Don't want anything to do with that N*zi prick. 😊
Absolutely.. left X and definitely no starlink
As a satcomms professional for 20 years I’d say there has to be a special use-case to make it worthwhile. Like you want mobility - on a campervan or a canal boat etc., or you’re somewhere out of range of 5G. In my village I could get >800 Mbit/s downlink on 5G although uplink wasn’t great. Plus giving money to Musk, as others have said, is not a great idea!
interesting Nick , thanks for Sharing Starlink setup great to learn new stuff ⚡️👊
Why did you buy this property with so many problems with the garden and high trees 🌳 😮?
Massive problems? The garden just needs a tidy up when the weather is better, once it's being mowed regularly it'll be fine. Nothing wrong with the trees, they can be cut if required. Why are people so OTT about things 😂
I'd have gone with business plan for £5 extra p/m, try standard first though. Then try business and compare, I'd like to know the results please.
Have a look at ubiquity for switches and WiFi. Get your self a 2.5gbs core network for less than you think.
£75 a month is extortionate. I'm paying £30 for symmetrical gigabit. Did you ever give 5G a go? It would be more consistent ping-wise than a Starlink if it's available in your area.
buy starlink and you are supporting heir muskolini

Yeah no thanks, StarLink is horrendously expensive compared to 5G. Take it back while you can.
We should not be supporting Musk and his companies, cancelled my Tesla order after the salute.

Can’t believe how slow your old house was!!!!
agree with the others boycott anything to do with musk, and starlink far to exspensive
Good luck with that. 😂
Why because the left told you that his wave was a nazi salute just because they don't agree with his policies?

Oh shut up U twit
Sounds like you live by me, ADSL lines are very poor service, but my virgin I'm getting 900+/100~ speed (hard to tell as I operate a file server and have 5 cctv camera feeds from the Internet streaming to me for remote backup,) I am tempted to go to the new BRSK as their speed is asynchronous up/down, they have just installed new poles on my road.
Tip of the day, you can change the phone web browser app to show "desktop mode" on android devices and you can see the upload speed too.. 14mbit is very slow but better than nothing... Down side to starlink is the outages as you bounce from 1 sat link to the next, can happen every few minutes depending on weather conditions, but again, if you don't have anything, it's better than nothing!
If you are installing your house with Data etc, look at the full unifi system with the starlink
You’re mad. I pay for 1gig virgin and I get 848meg on wireless. I stay clear of the virgin router and have a netgear orbi mesh system starlink should get about 350meg.
Did you hear Nick say there is no Virgin in the area?
Latency/ping is no use for games like CoD, battlefield not sure what fifa plays like over starlink but guessing with the 200+ ms it will also suck
Where'd you get 200ms from? He's showing mid 20s.
These satellites are only 340 miles away from you at any given point. They're not geostationary. Low latency, lower than direct fibre runs, in fact, is one of their selling points.
@@Monkeh616 depending on your location in the UK the latency reports I have seen on redit was fairly high and 200ms was somewhere in the middle of the people complaining, worst I've seen is 500ms and best was 60 on games like wow, cod and CS
This will probably get buried, but invest in a business line (there are many providers that do them) Of course it will be way more expensive than the £75+ you are paying and have a hefty install cost, but thats an expense to write off against the youtube channel. Also, for those wondering, the routers are the TP Link Deco X50-POE (fantastic btw). One last thing, i would advise against installing the internet related things in the loft, just from the heat perspective.
200 mb/s is bloody good considering!
Need more video with DOG!
All you have to do is look how Sky tv works and Starlink is on the same scale
a youtuber buying a house without checking the internet availability
4g or 5g may be better if you arent too far from your mobile masts and faster average speeds than Starlink IMHO
You can lolly pop the tree you just take the tops off.
2 years ago I got an iphone 14 pro on Vodafone and have unlimited data, I can see the phone mast from my window and when connected to my pc would get download speeds around 200Mbps, Ive since upgraded to iphone 16 pro and now get 5G Ultra on Vodafone (also called 5G standalone), and because the USB socket is USB 3.0 the socket connection is faster and now get around 400Mbps down and about 25Mbps up. I could get Virgin media but it's too expensive and BT got no interest in putting Fibre in. Now you've moved dish outside, wouldn't you need to re-check the alignment? Can't wait to see all your other house projects, gonna be a good year!
Badly advised Nic. Like the electrical vlogs but can't somach Musk. There is a moral component to life. And you have to draw a line under the Nazi salute. Please think about further vids supporting his companies.

£75 a month for internet, tell your kids to read a book or go outside.....
Had Virgin myself in the past and it was some of the worst bloody Internet I've had.
Had a knowledgeable friend check it out and Virgin throttle the absolute hell out of everyone.
Never, ever got close to the advertised speeds. Not even half of it.
The muskrat has a poor record for security, there is a high likelihood he's also sucking up all your data. This is a case where you should route all your traffic through a VPN.
After what's going on in America this is a tad tone deaf...
It’s a product that works, get over it.

Interesting enjoying seeing the new house progression,
Can I recommend you put all your smart devices on a mesh network and all your other bits and pieces like PCs go hard-wired and then what you want to do is have a separate network down to the garage Cat 6 or 7 to a terminal point a Wi-Fi 6 or 7 that will be a dedicated to yourself in your man cave lol
cat 7 is pointless. same copper cables inside- just different insulation which is not needed for domestic installs or any non data server commercial installs.
No decent 5G, no Virgin, no fibre......I have Starlink for the exact same reasons and I can't wait t stop paying £75 a month, it's alright but it's not worth the money, the instant a viable alternative comes around, it's gone
Bloody star link, can I ask Nick, do you have a 5g connection? I did a network test near me with different providers, I found I got a good 5g with three, so I got a sim only deal off a virtual carrier (ID Mobile) bought a a router that takes a 5g sim card and now I get unlimited data for £16 a month, and speeds of 300mb, I'm not a gamer or anything but that's enough for me. Then on the plus side of that I bought a cheap landline phone that was dect compatible and now have that as a second line, albeit a mobile number but a land land phone rings instead.
a 4G EE unlimited router could work almost as well provided you are near a EE mast.
Thats what I do but the full price per month is £50 so starlink after the innitial cost is not much more.
Speed wise on 4G I get 80 to 90Mb download and 40 to 50 Mb upload speeds
Hell, get an EE unlimited SIM a Telktonia and some external 4/5G antenna and you would be laughing and cost less over all than Starlink and get a better signal than the fisherprice routers ISPs provide!
Boycott Musk !
I went him sky, 80/20mbps (£45/m) to virgin 275/275mbps (£15/m) to now community fibre which is 1gig/900mbps (£26/m)
I think it's only right Nick, you show us the costings for everything your doing,,,obviously your doing it yourself,,and exactly how much you will save by doing this,,,,the heat pump especially.....Thanks.
