Im driving a ford mondeo mk4 with the 2.5Turbo inline 5 cylinder sourced from Volvo and used to have a ford focus mk2 st225 with the same inline 5 turbo 5 cylinder volvo engine one of the most reliable motors what ford Europe ever built thanks to those engines
Ferdinand Piech managed to give birth to this idea of 5 cylinders when got hired by Mercedes to help them with a problem they had at the time. There was a need to make a engine that was powerful and smooth and economical at the same time, therefore Ferdinand added one more cylinder to OM616 and this is how the OM617 in line 5 was born :)
I had one of these .... A 1996 T5 R, and I got to absolutely hate it .... I traded it in 3 months later for a 1999 E36 M3 Bimmer, and kept it for 10 years.
ive stopped buying volvos after they ditched the six and five cylinders. my last volvo is my current c30 t5 with VME architecture. i'd never buy anything with this new GEELY direct injection new architecture called VEA.

Its a shame that volvo was acquired by a chinese company that just loves to make over complex engines like the twincharged 4 cylinders
