Cash was such an original in every way. And a God-fearing, humble man. No doubt he and June are singing up a storm in heaven right now:)

Johnny June and the rest brought hope to them. Gotta respect that.

I couldn't agree more!!! God loves us all - sinners and saints alike - and He had to be smiling down as Johnny shared his faith with the men who needed to hear that uplifting message so. Can you imagine how magical that day had to be for the inmates of San Quentin? What a wonderful gift!!!!

You can tell that he touched their hearts with that song. They knew he was just like them but that he was saved. He was a good, good man.

my dad was sent to Cyprus in 1967 to 68 and he sent us beautiful cards with pressed flowers from the town in this song. I still have the cards. He told us of his visit to each holy place he went. He was so peaceful in those letters, and believe me, he was not a peaceful man, but those places of the Holy land gave him a few moments peace. He said he had a feeling there, he had never had before. What Johnny says at the beginning should mean something to all of us, I should also mention that my father also told us Turks and the Cypriots did not want peace, they knew not of peace, and would have none of it. He said " we cannot help these people, as they do not want our help or our freedom or our peace. We will spend precious dollar after dollar for about 30 years and then we will go home, broken men, dead men, scared men and women, but peace will never be had here. They do not know of Peace. I am doing my job, as ordered, as I have always done, but at least in WW2 we knew what we were fighting for. Our freedom, our peace, our children, our families. Here, my men are restless and just want to go home, they know we waste our lives here. We have lost a man already and we have to leave him behind. He will watch over the men who come here after I take my men home. They want to be with their children now, as they know as I do, we cannot help these people make peace. They want land, they want religion, they want to rule, just as Hitler did. Both sides want the same exact thing. To have it all. To rule peoples lives. They will never have this either. No side will falter, No side will give in. We should go home. We should leave these people to their constant sorrow. They live as close to God as any Man can be, and they see none of that. I am glad I will go home soon, and take my men to a place where Freedom was the goal, and the goal was obtained. Home to that bright red Maple leaf that flies over my 4 children and my wife. 6 months is 6 months wasted. This two sides will always be two sides, with no compromise there can be no peace. Peacekeeping missions are the most dangerous of my jobs. I fought the front lines in WW2 and Korea, at least I was aware of who the enemy were and what they were fighting for. I love you son, Daddy, with Gods help, will be home soon. My father wrote that letter to my little brother, one month before he came home. My little brother was all of 5 years old. I tried hard to read it to him in a way he would understand my fathers words. My father was saying, we need to let go of this mess and stop waisting our Men and women on a battle that cannot be won. He was grateful to see the places of Jesus Birth and where mary dropped her milk for him on the rock, he sent us letters to each child, 3 girls and his son, each describing a different site he and the men went to see, where he turned the water into wine. I have each card, my siblings hated my dad, and for a long time I hated the bastard to, but when I looked way back at how and why he became that bastard, I have come to forgive, and I have kept little of who he was, but those cards and these words above meant something to me and should be heard around the world. Stop trying to save those who do not want to be saved. Save our bodies for the fights worth fighting for. 32 years later we pulled out our troops with no resolution, but many lost good men and women. Bless them for the effort. We left a man named Jerrod Otto Redmond buried there, where his children never even got to say goodbye, they cannot visit his grave, it cost a fortune to take that trip for a single mother of three. So I finally contacted his daughter, she knew nothing of this man who died trying to find the freedom for those people, he was a hero, my father screamed in the night in his nightmares, of this man Cpl. Redmonds death, he would scream out from his dreams, we have to bring Tyke home, we can't leave him here. My father was Black Watch on his tour in WW2, no man lleft behind was so important to him. He was RCR in Cyprus, but no man should ever be left that far from his wife and children that I knew more about him than they did. His daughter, was grateful for the information I could give her, and she has since at least seen photographs of his beautiful resting place. She is in her 50's. I love this song, but we need to do more than sing about it. Let us bring peace where we go, let us know the peace my father spoke of and be grateful there are men like Cpl. Redmond and my father willing to die for that peace for their loved ones. Sorry I got lost on this. I lived on Jarvis St. in London Ontario when my father was sent to Cyprus and saw the town Johnny sings of. I met Johnny and June a multitude of times as their Manager, Saul Holiff lived just up the road about 5 or 6 houses from my house. Saul got Johnny to fame and then quite the business for ever to try and find some peace for himself and his little family. Sauls Son recently came home to London for the first time in approx. 40 years. I was so glad to see the grown man I used to babysit while Johnny and June were on the road with Saul and his wife Barbara, Check out a movie Jonathan Holiff made called My father and the man in black. He has a great Facebook Page of the same name as the film and the trailer is on RUclips. It is all exact truth of the 13 years Saul was managing Johnny from 58 to 73 he took Johnny out of his drug fueled life to the man who sang this song. Saul was a mean mean son of a bitch, when it came to running the show, but that is what it took to survive in that era he grew up in. There is a super 8 clip of sauls son Jonathans birthday party. My little brother and older sister make their big screen debut in that clip. thanks for listening, and please work together with your brothers and sisters of this thing we call the human race, to find that peace my father and many Moms and Dads, Men and Women, laid their lives on the line for.

Hats off to Johnny for being able to pull this off. Most country singers today would have absolutely no credibility in a forum like this. And to preach the Gospel in a plain, un-preachy style - wow - it is awe-inspiring, really. He had everyone's attention and I can bet that many silent prayers were said after the cell doors were shut that night. A very inspiring clip. Thanks for sharing.

Carl Perkin's lead guitar. This was after Luther(no relation) passed away. Bob Wooten took Luther's place and was introduced at this particular San Quentin concert. Carl ended up leaving Cash's Band. He joined it along with his Drummer -W.S."Fluke" Holland after Carl was in a serious wreck with his brother,Jay, rhythm guitar player was killed. "Fluke" stayed in Cash's band until Cash, died.

Who -- which country singer -- nowadays can present with such authority, power, sensitivity, and grace? People think I like this type of country music because it's old or somehow "retro." But that's not it at all; I like it because of how it makes me feel -- regardless of its age.

There are many good ministries in prison, and many prisoners come to Christ there. When a person is in Christ, HE IS A NEW CREATION. OLD THINGS ARE PAST AWAY. You who judge those who have become new creations, you will be judged. As God forgives, so must we.

Grape juice,"oinos" is the wine that Jesus made at the marriage feast, as those guests, the"men of distinction"(Gen 9:20-27)and the wedding crashers of those days(Prv 20:1)were "well drunk". Jesus,in Habakkuk 2:15 "Woe to him who gives his neighbor intoxicating drink." We need to be careful not to justify on anothers lie, when clearly what was given here was the first "fruit of the vine"(Matthew 26:29), found in the cluster of the vine(Isa65:8)and called thepure blood ofthegrape(Deu32:14)
