My daughter lost her dad Friday evening - we all live in different parts of the country. Trying to soothe her I sent her this song till we can be together. She cried and cried but that’s what Jackson’s music does - it releases our emotions. For many years since the death of one husband, now two, and my only son I have passed my time listening to Jackson Browne’s music. We are so blessed to witness his gift of music to humanity. Peace and love to all. ❤

Good Lord, this is genius and beautiful. I have always listened to and loved Jackson"s music beginning in my 20's, still now 3 decades later it is still just as poignant, however, this particular song speaks to me in a different light now that I have lived life and raised 4 children and been married to the same man for almost 40 years. Great music never dies and it feeds our spirits like nothing else.

    "For A Dancer"
Keep a fire burning in your eye
Pay attention to the open sky
You never know what will be coming down
I don't remember losing track of you
You were always dancing in and out of view
I must have thought you'd always be around
Always keeping things real by playing the clown
Now you're nowhere to be found
I don't know what happens when people die
Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try
It's like a song I can hear playing right in my ear
    That I can't sing
    I can't help listening
And I can't help feeling stupid standing 'round
Crying as they ease you down
'Cause I know that you'd rather we were dancing
    Dancing our sorrow away
    (Right on dancing)
No matter what fate chooses to play
(There's nothing you can do about it anyway)
Just do the steps that you've been shown
    By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
    Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone
Keep a fire for the human race
Let your prayers go drifting into space
You never know what will be coming down
Perhaps a better world is drawing near
And just as easily it could all disappear
Along with whatever meaning you might have found
Don't let the uncertainty turn you around
(The world keeps turning around and around)
Go on and make a joyful sound
Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
    And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
    But you'll never know

Labour is blossoming or dancing where
The body is not bruised to pleasure soul,
Nor beauty born out of its own despair,
Nor blear-eyed wisdom out of midnight oil.
O chestnut tree, great rooted blossomer,
Are you the leaf, the blossom or the bole?
O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can we know the dancer from the dance?

Yeah, it'll bleed, but it will grow bigger, too. The price of our existence, that we all pay : pain and loss and scared, lonely or wistful feelings. The silence and the ache of our internal beings, JB brings it out and sings it loud, and sometimes he puts such kindness and healing to it, that we can dance to the rhythm and sing along to the lyric. We are blessed.

My ex fiancé, who struggled with addiction passed away. I had taken and gotten her from rehab after rehab and finally I couldn’t take it anymore. The stealing, the lying I let me anger get the best of me. She sent me an email before she died and I never opened it. By this time we weren’t getting along. 2 months after that email, I googled her only to find her obituary. It gave this song more meaning and when I think of her it just brings tears to my eyes. I tried so hard for so long. It just got the better of me. I listen to this song and wish I could’ve been a better man and got past the hurt. Even though I didn’t go to the funeral and didn’t know about her death til 2 months later. The image in these lyrics brings me to my knees.
I can’t help feeling stupid standing ‘round
Crying as they ease you down
I wasn’t there to see her.

@@cynthialeveque6606 thank you for the kind words. It gives this song a different meaning. I've struggled with her 1 request. After I would take her to visit her daughter she said "if I die, please write her to let her know I loved her". I know if I wrote that letter her ex would never let that letter get to her. And what I would write would be so personal I wouldnt want it to fall into his hands. Even though it has nothing to do with him. Hes not a good guy.

@@cynthialeveque6606 I have the bulk of the letter written. I know what the message is. Drugs dont just destroy lives, they destroy souls. I've kept diaries since 1982. I wrote every day til around 2008. After that I didn't write as much. I lost a few, but probably have about 40. I dont read back. I shouldve been a better person. She used to talk about if she died...but I never thought it would be a reality and with all the things she did. I shouldve found a way to forgive. She even haunted me for several days after she died that June. I didn't know it was her until the August I googled her name and the obituary came up. Then it made sense. I listen to this song and see it in my mind. She just couldnt beat the addiction. Recently I found a letter she wrote. I didn't even remember it and didn't realize it was from her til I read it. I was left with 1 thought. When I die and maybe for a moment meet God. What right do I have to ask for forgiveness when I failed to forgive. It's not sugar coated, but the truth. It's too late when a person passes away. Although I dont write in journals much I still write and struggle with the other side. Even Jackson Browne touches upon it
"I don't know what happens when people die Can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try"
Being human living in these fragile moments, struggling makes it so hard. I know what the letter should say.
The 1st line I wrote when I found out she passed in August 2017, she died in June was this line
The most beautiful part of her, was her love for you.
      Sincerely,
      Jag

Sounds like you need to forgive you. You have no power over someone who will not save themselves. Sad...but true. Glad you are doing a lot of writing. You need to get it out of your system. Sounds like she was in a lot of pain. She is fortunate she had you in her life and that you cared as much as you did. Don't just look at what you did wrong...also look at what you did right. It's a horrible tragedy that you went through but see if you can get something positive out it. I'm sure you learned more about yourself through the whole ordeal.
