My dad passed away from losing a decade long battle to cancer and this song was one I heard him play a lot near the end of his life. He has a wonderful taste in music, and though he was a man of few words you never had to guess what he was feeling if you paid attention the music he listened to. This song tugs on my emotional strings more than any when I put myself in his shoes. But its too beautiful to not want to play every now and then.
I second that Thank you for posting.... This Solo Acoustic Vol. 1 is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Pure spirit driven understanding of the human condition, in one voice and a guitar. He is an artist, a poet, a dreamer, a realist, a visionary, AWESOME song. I can never pick a favorite.
What in the world does a 16 year old kid know.? JB knew something deeper than, then I do at 59. Amazing song, I still listen to it at least once a week.
I was thinking the same thing....still, he could feel that strange feeling of longing and loss and regret only grown up people feel sometimes...(very often, I'd say ;-). Such a great artist
These Days (lyrics) Well I've been out walking I don't do that much talking these days These days These days I seem to think a lot About the things that I forgot to do And all the times I had the chance to And I had a lover It's so hard to risk another these days These days Now if I seem to be afraid To live the life I have made in song Well it's just that I've been losing for so long Well, I'll keep on moving, moving on Things are bound to be improving these days One of these days These days I sit on corner stones And count the time in quarter tones to ten Don't confront me with my failures I had not forgotten them
He wrote this song when he was 16 years old! "This sad, hurting song was originally written by Jackson Browne when he was just 16 years old in either 1964 or 1965. It appeared on a Browne demo in early 1967 under the title "I've Been Out Walking." Later in the same year it gained its first release when Andy Warhol's protégé Nico recorded it on her Chelsea Girl album, with Browne playing acoustic guitar. Other artists covered it over the following few years, including the Nitty Gritty Junk Band on their Rare Junk album and Tom Rush on his 1970 self-titled set." Insane talent!
"These Days" is a song written by Jackson Browne and recorded by numerous artists. Browne wrote the song at age 16; its lyrics deal with loss and regret.[1] It was first recorded by Nico in 1967 for her album Chelsea Girl. Gregg Allman recorded a new arrangement of the song in 1973 on Laid Back, and Browne recorded the Allman arrangement on For Everyman the same year. "These Days" has also been recorded by Paul Westerberg, St. Vincent, Fountains of Wayne, and Drake (musician), among others.
How does a 16 year old have the insight to write a song that deep? I'm amazed. Jackson Browne is a gifted artist. It seems, to me, that James Taylor gets more attention and accolades but for my money Mr Browne's extensive body of work is unmatched by his peers.
there's only so many songs that can stab you right in the gut like this one. i think a lot of people can identify with failure, not living up to their own expectations, etc....
Of the many versions of These Days, this is surely my favorite.

It got me through a heart attack aged 43,and the realisation that I wasn’t bulletproof…I’m 54 now.
Dear J B, thank you for your music, for all your beautiful Lyrics and for the Person you are.
Amen!

When you think about a 16 year old Jackson Browne writing “These Days” it really sinks in just what a gifted artist he was at that time.
Soul splitting and ageless... thank you Mr. Browne ❤

My favorite JB song. So painfully honest it almost hurts to listen to, but so beautiful are the lyrics and really, so hopeful.
Really really really good

These Days (lyrics)
Well I've been out walking
I don't do that much talking these days
These days
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to
And I had a lover
It's so hard to risk another these days
These days
Now if I seem to be afraid
To live the life I have made in song
Well it's just that I've been losing for so long
Well, I'll keep on moving, moving on
Things are bound to be improving these days
One of these days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten
Don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them

Sorry CBDM...the years are not right. I would never take anything away from Jackson. The years just don't add up.....check your math. Somebody is off.
