I do know it is recommended to clean ears on regular basis. And I do, haha but my easiest time is the day after 4th of July and New Year’s Day, because all 5 of my dogs are still a little sluggish from the sedatives given the night before to help with the anxiety from all the dreaded fireworks. Hi Dr Jones, Is it possible that you may have a solution for dogs that love to swim (AND I MEAN THAT MY DOG LOVES TO SWIM UNDER WATER ) and have very narrow ear canals to still go swimming without getting ear infections. I would very much appreciate your come back and so will my dog. Se misses swimming. Thanks from Australia.
I know this video was posted awhile ago, but could you use coconut oil or veg oil ? If you don’t have olive ? And do you have to use the aloe my dogs ears are super red and I don’t wanna hurt her She’s a Saint Bernard huge floppy ears and she has a ear infection right now
So I tried the 1/3 cup of oil (used MCT oil) mixed with 2 TBSP of the Aloe Vera pure gel. It needs a lot of stirring and shaking as there is nothing to emulsify it with and it can come out in clumps. Still, I put it on a cotton cosmetic pad/round and then tucked it into the kitty's ear to squeeze the liquid down and then massage it in as was shown. It seemed to give him relief, especially after we had been using the vet recommended cleaners (with 4 different acids - ethanol, lactic, benzoic salicylic acid) for 3 days and his ear bits became quite inflammed, almost bleeding and he was clearly in pain and not tolerating the treatments which he had started out being quite compliant with - recognizing he needed care. The other ear cleaning product the local vet had recommended (which we hope no one ever uses) is the UBASAN which contains "fragrance" of all things! (should never have been sold or recommended in our opinion). The one kitty we used it on ran in pain and wouldn't let her ears be touched after that. Seems there are a lot of harsh chemicals that are being sold as for "veterinary use". We were actually getting debris that looked like the skin from a brown bean out of his ear that was sticking quite a bit to his ear. We wondered if it was his ear trying to form a protective layer and then the fungus, yeast or bacteria attaching on to that that we were pulling out. The extra "scraping" didn't help either with the irritating solution. We ended up putting a dab of hydrocortisone 0.5% OTC cream on his ear parts just to soothe the inflammation. The so-called professional cleaners are just too harsh on delicate ears. So it was with great relief that we found out about the product Zymox PLUS Otic Advanced with 1% Hydrocortisone and are hoping to try it when it arrives (just ordered). Can you comment on it? They are based on 3 enzymes and is both an ear cleaner and treatment (finally something simple!!). This red label one contains biofilm busters but it isn't available in Canada - just the USA. We ordered the blue one (without the biofilm busters) from Walmart and hope we can get it. I also heard that Pet Valu will be carrying this ear cleaner BUT only in the 0.5% HC solution. Apparently Zymox treats all 3 issues; bacteria, fungus, yeast. No mention of parasites, but then that is why we got Milbemite and Revolution, as the natural remedies didn't appear to be working (guess that was because he had an ear infection vs. an infestation). We were so disappointed that our vet just kept trying to get us to pay for a string of diagnostics ($120 lab fees each time plus professional fees and we were never any further ahead knowing what was wrong with his ears) and we were just looking for a reasonable treatment and solution. Kudos to Veterinary Secretes RUclips channel which has just been so helpful in guiding us, although there is still a bit of trial and error because not everything for dogs translates to cats. For instance, i think there was a posting regarding blending Neem oil (great for humans and dogs) which I think is toxic to cats. So ideally, I'd like to see more posts on cat care, especially for the common things like parasites, fungus, bacteria, yeast . Also, This Zymox would be worth doing a review on it, because it is a fair price to pay for the solution if it addresses at least 3 of these common ear issues (excl. parasites). I realize the vet would then be out of $$ if there was a simple solution you could just recommend giving a try over the phone. It is that whole pharma profit-motive vs. care-motive. This channel reminds me of the James Herriot books I used to enjoy reading where you got the sense he really cared about animals and it wasn't just a business (nothing wrong with being compensated and having a fair exchange of value) where the goals are very different. So I greatly appreciate the sincerity that Dr. Andrew Jones has.
Hi R Lee: if you see this comment, I appreciate you sharing all those thoughts. I'm curious if you ended up liking or not liking the Zymox ear product? Sounds interesting!!
@@flowersafeheart Yes, I did use it, BUT would greatly caution anyone to avoid the one with Hyrdocortisone. Reason being is that we only had that one and used it successively when the infection came back and the hydrocortisone actually increased the growth of fungus/bacteria. I only read and found out about it later after many months of what seemed to be highly resistant ear infection. Then we had to go to a vet and use Surolan which the prescribing vet overmedicated beyond what was on the Elanco product monograph and use instructions. It should have been 3-5 drops per ear and they insisted (even after checking with staff 3 X) that the cat be given up to 10 drops in each ear!!!. So he became DEAF. Some of it reversed in one ear. The Surolan did clear up the infection that had persisted, BUT he was deaf completely in one ear and partially in another that had a congenital blockage in the ear structure (thankfully in this case). As with all pharmaceuticals (like hydrocortisone) there are always side-effects and then you are getting into stronger meds, like the Surolan, with even more serious side-effects like deafness. SO BE WARNED that if you use Zymox, avoid the one with Hydrocortisone EXCEPT as a first-time or once use, if warranted. Do not use for subsequent or recurring infections (just the plain Zymox). I have let the company know about this, but it depends if they will caution people appropriately. Overall, I liked the Zymox, but the hydrocortisone needs to be limited to a one-time use and then just the plain Zymox.
I am so confused about the vinegar for ear cleaning - there are sources online that claim you should use white vinegar, but never ACV, others that say ACV is specifically the thing you should use, and lots of places that say you should never, ever, under any circumstances use any kind of vinegar in cat or dog ears. It's scary when the available information is so drastically contradictory.
Took a long time to get to the cleaning but he was such a good dog and so handsome and he just layed there so calmly. Thank you for sharing. My husband and I were looking for ear cleaning tips for dogs.
Thank you Dr. Jones for all your videos , they help me so much. My Bulldogs and Pug seem to get ear infections a lot. How often can I used this wash on my dogs? thanks again.
my cat has had recurrent ear infection, it started out with one ear having black crumbly stuff, after I used an antifungal solution given by the vet and some ear antibiotic ointment(7 days), ear infection disappeared...but unfortunately it came back again. I started using the oil, used it twice to clean the ear..some gunk keeps coming out but there is also some fluid that comes out. I am not sure what I should do? I took my cat back to the vet but she didn't find anything wrong, every day my poor cat shakes his head and there is fluid and gunk stuck in his ears. I don't know what to do, if something wrong with his ear drums would I hurt him by putting oil/antifungal stuff in his ears. Thank you for the video!
Dr. Jones, my dogs ear flap has become very thick and tough feeling. She is a black mouth cur weighing about 45 lbs. We live on about 40 acres in the country. I have 4 rescue dogs. She is the only one affected. Would this treatment be good for my dog? Thank you for your informative videos. I really appreciate all you do.
I am so glad I found and subscribed to your channel. After watching this video, I realized that I need to start massaging the base of my dogs ears. Question-is coconut oil a good substitute for olive oil?
can i use Coconut Oil instead of olive oil? if yes, do i still need to put aloevera as well? Thank u so much for all the natural remedies 🧡🧡🧡 i also hope my dog stays as still as Lewis 🧡
Dr. Andrew! I'm so thankful I ran across your video. Really, my Henry is miserable, shaking his head all the time. I really hope this helps! Ps. Did you mention free catalogs on home remedies for your pet!?!? Count me in. Do I email you my address or what? Lol😊😊
Hi, thank you for the very informative video. Can I ask if it is ok to use green tea and vinegar on my toy poodle as she has very hairy ears and I don’t want the fluid to get trapped in her ears !
Thank you so much! From your other videos, my cat doesn't appear to have mites or a yeast infection but they are recently waxy and she's shaking her head and little droplets are flying out. I will gently try cleaning with the apple cider vinegar (just the part I can see, I'm not dumping ACV down her canal). Thanks again!! Hmmm, wondering if her dirty ears has anything to do with a slight change in diet? I went to a grain free kibble...
Wish you were in my area! Thanks for the lesson in cleaning my labs' ears. Been spending money on Zymox cleaner and was hoping to find a more natural way to clean her 9 yo ears.
thank you, thank you somuch for this very informative way of cleaning our pets ears, I just adopted a cat, but when I had her she had just a little infections, without proper instructions and knowldege I just cleaned her left ears with just cotton buds almost everyday, and I beleived she was alright;;;but yesterday until to day she started shaking her head as if something was bothering her and she started scratching her left ear again.... and when I cleaned it again it seems her infections came back!? I have to wait for my friend so she could accompany me to the vet...but since I found on your channel it gave me the courage to try this method by using what you have listed...thank you again .more power to your channel. I subbed...
This vet is not a money hungry doctor. He just wants to help all type of animals by giving us the knolage we need to help our pets. Sincerely thank you.
Great video! I have a dog that gets yeast infections constantly and I have been looking for a natural remedy. Also I have an adopted kitty that has some ear problems as well. Luckily for me, they all sit patiently and let me do this (even the kitty!). Most of the time the ear is inflamed though so I will try the olive oil mixture or the Epi Otic you suggested. I am totally with you on the maintenance before it even gets to this point. Thanks again!
Love all ypur videos! Wondering what you suggest or do with a fearful dog? I have a pomchi who we rescued at 4wks & although shes very sweet shes still very fear full of any grooming. She tries to bite & gets aggressive. Is there a holding technique or other technique you suggest?
Remember to drink a bit of ACV diluted in your water for human health benefits. Oh also can be added directly to the skin for treating and maintaining healthy skin for jock itch and athletes foot. If you currently have a rash add it 2x a day after washing and drying the area well. For prevention just 1x a day after washing will help. Btw that's ACV WITH "the mother." Thanks for the helpful video! I realized my pooch had an ear infection after cleaning and he yelled from adding to one ear but not the other.
hi dr.jones.. i love your video it give me an idea on how i'm going to clean my dogs ear... i have a question... i think my dog's ears are infected.. because there is this black in the one of my dog's ear and the other ear hve this black and a kinda yellow sticky fluid.. what is the good remedy about it?? i am hooing for your answer.. thank you..
Sounds like yeast/bacteria combination. First needs to be well cleaned, then treated- you can consider green tea/vinegar, or a traditional one from your vet
What anesthetic did you use to keep Louis practically asleep the whole time? That's not normal! I have to use benadryl and a muzzle for my 140 lb pyr who refuses ear cleaning. Luckily, it doesn't need to be done much.
My lab has aural hematoma in her left ear. Can I use the apple cidar vinegar solution to clean her ear instead of Mometamax Otic? Would you recommend surgurey for hematomas or let them heal on their own? Anything I can do to make her comfortable while dealing with the swelling?
Apple cider vinegar isn’t the best idea for an aural hematoma, especially with that swelling-it could irritate things more. I’d recommend sticking with your vet's advice for cleaning, like Mometamax if prescribed. You can try cool compresses to reduce swelling and inflammation. Keep me posted on how she’s doing!
@@VeterinarySecrets Thank you, can I still use Clotrimazole cream for yeast/bacteris as well as Curcuiminoids in her food? Do I need to put some black pepper for the tumeric to be effective? What are your thoughts on healing hematoma? Drain, surguery or absorb on its own. My vet is money hungry so I am switching to a new one. Im trying to do all the research until I see the new vet Tuesday so any help for my sweet 100lb black lab will be sooo appreciative!!!
Louis trusts you so much...... QUESTION: Hi Dr Jones-My Sheltie, Shimmer, was at a sitters for 2 weeks. I checked her ears, because she was holding one ear low and saw one ear was clean but the other one was black or dark brown just caked inside her ear, in the canal, into the fur and on the flap. Is this normal, to have one dirty ear only and will the oil/aloe work..there is a bit of blood after her second day of cleaning, as the dirt was just almost scabbed in.After 2 days of cleaning it got just as bad, so I am doing twice a day...is that OK??
Apple cider is the best to use with water and just squeeze it in the ear and then massage it basically . To prevent my dog from getting this I should do it once a week or could I do it more then once a week
This is the Best Informational Video I've found. DEFINITELY the SAFEST I have 3 German Shepherds that always needing ears cleaned. As you said in video my problem was not swooshing fluid long enough Thanks for the Advice
Q: Any tricks on how to check to see if ear drum is intact beyond using a (pet?) ear optoscope and visually confirming it is intact? ( I've read that before putting any chemical/ liquid in ear when the ear drum is ruptured can lead to deafness.) PS: It possible to convert human version of otoscope for pet (cat) use? If not, any tips on what to look for when buying a pet otoscope?
Hi, You are correct in that it is better to 1st check the ear drum, although in many serious ear infections the ear is too painful for this to even happen in vet practice. If in doubt avoid things that can damage the ear (otic) nerve- chlorhexidine, and gentocin

how is that dog so calm!! such a good boy. my dog would literally start running away as soon as he sees q-tips with me
My vet told not to use Q-tips
Use cotton balls and swab out debris ... q tip can push debris down further or rupture ear drum

And do you have to use the aloe my dogs ears are super red and I don’t wanna hurt her
She’s a Saint Bernard huge floppy ears and she has a ear infection right now
So I tried the 1/3 cup of oil (used MCT oil) mixed with 2 TBSP of the Aloe Vera pure gel.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
👍🏻Thanks so much for this video. It's very helpful! 💖🐶 And Louis deserves an award❣
You're welcome! He sure was the goodest boy.

Thank you Dr. Jones for all your videos , they help me so much. My Bulldogs and Pug seem to get ear infections a lot. How often can I used this wash on my dogs?
thanks again.
Hi Bill, Thanks. Weekly as needed
my cat has had recurrent ear infection, it started out with one ear having black crumbly stuff, after I used an antifungal solution given by the vet and some ear antibiotic ointment(7 days), ear infection disappeared...but unfortunately it came back again.
Great stuff doc.
Yes for this case
You are an amazing doctor!
Thank you:)
can i use Coconut Oil instead of olive oil? if yes, do i still need to put aloevera as well? Thank u so much for all the natural remedies 🧡🧡🧡 i also hope my dog stays as still as Lewis 🧡
Hi. You can check out this newer video where I used coconut oil.

@@VeterinarySecrets Thank you very much Doc!
Dr.
Thank you so much for this incredibly helpful video!
Could you possibly add alcohol to evaporate all moisture, or is this not necessary?
I subbed...
Thanks
So what's what's going sedation medicine for anxious and hyper dogs,my dog doesn't like his ears to be touched at all because they are so irritated
Such a patient patient! 💜
My dog is on antibiotics due to a ear infection but it's pretty swollen shut. Do i attempt to clean it or wait till antibiotics are done?
most AWESOME n REAL vet on the net!!! 😉 thank you, once again, for sharing your knowledge/expertise wit dah rest of USa!!! 😉
Thank You!
This vet is not a money hungry doctor. He just wants to help all type of animals by giving us the knolage we need to help our pets. Sincerely thank you.
TY for a thorough and well done tutorial. My dog is next !
Would regular white venegar work as well?
Jack Ntulsa yes
Regular white vinegar is too strong and doesn't habe to vits ACV has.
Welcome- hope it helps
You are lucky that they sit.
Love all ypur videos! Wondering what you suggest or do with a fearful dog? I have a pomchi who we rescued at 4wks & although shes very sweet shes still very fear full of any grooming. She tries to bite & gets aggressive. Is there a holding technique or other technique you suggest?
Thanks- some type of natural sedative. Ie Valerian, CBD oil
Thank you for your time and videos!! They’re SO helpful and informative!!!
You're most welcome, Eva!

What a good boy Luis!!! Thank you for this awesome video!! I have a German Shepherd and I have to clean his ears...
Btw that's ACV WITH "the mother."
Thanks for the helpful video! I realized my pooch had an ear infection after cleaning and he yelled from adding to one ear but not the other.
Thank you very much for your lovely video
hi dr.jones.. i love your video it give me an idea on how i'm going to clean my dogs ear... i have a question... i think my dog's ears are infected.. because there is this black in the one of my dog's ear and the other ear hve this black and a kinda yellow sticky fluid.. what is the good remedy about it?? i am hooing for your answer..
Do you ever suggest using peroxide for ear mites or cleaning?
Best to not use as very irritating to the skin
Fyi...pets can die from ear mites best to get ear drops from a vet!!!
Beautiful dog
Very helpful. Thanks!
Can I use just straight peroxide????
What a good dog! I love watching him haha! I also love this channel! Thank you for all the info! I think all animal owner need to know these things!
Apple cider is the best to use with water and just squeeze it in the ear and then massage it basically . To prevent my dog from getting this I should do it once a week or could I do it more then once a week
hi, my pup is a teacup pom, she doesnt have mites or infection or anything, do i have to clean them every month?? or will she clean them herself thx
No
Thank you ❤😊 you are so helpful

To rid ear mites in cats how long do I do the ACV rinse for. Some say do everyday for 3 weeks with no breaks. Is this correct?
Q: Any tricks on how to check to see if ear drum is intact beyond using a (pet?) ear optoscope and visually confirming it is intact?
( I've read that before putting any chemical/ liquid in ear when the ear drum is ruptured can lead to deafness.)
PS: It possible to convert human version of otoscope for pet (cat) use?
If not, any tips on what to look for when buying a pet otoscope?
Hi,
You are correct in that it is better to 1st check the ear drum, although in many serious ear infections the ear is too painful for this to even happen in vet practice. If in doubt avoid things that can damage the ear (otic) nerve- chlorhexidine, and gentocin
Thank you . Very useful natural ingredients too.
