Dear Château de Tiffaugesn, Thomas and everybody, thank you for celebrating our 10th anniversary and 2.5 million views in this decade! Kosuke and Takayuki
One thing I love so much about this video is that none of the events are just thrown in randomly. Every one of them is a reaction that can be traced back to the robber.
No, he means the robber. The thing at the beginning with the cops chasing the robber is meant to show you how all the areas aren't separate places, which then gives way to the huge chain reaction that eventually leads to all of the realities getting destroyed, and then all the characters lining up just right on the screen to create the "please wait" bars. It's all so brilliant. Especially the ways they chose to line up the realities to make things happen. For crying out loud the dark blue dancer is used to transport a bullet, then a bowl of spaghetti to the proper scenes! And the stage thing allows one totally unrelated scene to link up to it, since, after all, they're filming the scene. With actors. In a set.
@@edwardzweyer9669 guy falling on the board is what allowed robber to escape his reality in the first place, before that robber was frozen in a loop like every other reality. +radwoof Same here. I originally posted this on my fb wall in December of 2009. I still come back occasionally to watch it. There's always something new to find, like the artist getting hit and his hand moving the pencil across the page that creates the jump that the motorcycles go off.
DollFishu You obviously have never watched Sharknado 1, 2, 3, 4, and read the synopsis for the Sharknado 5 being released this Summer. Or watched the Mechashark SyFy original series of movies. lol
I remember watching this right around when SugimotoKousuke first released this, when I was in elementary school! I am SO glad I found it again! This is amazing animation work! Amazing job!
This video is sort of a tribute to the wonders of television, but ... well ... is it right for a tribute to be so much better than the thing it's a tribute to?
The way that the characters and their positions on the screen in the end correspond to the colors of the disconnected/errored TV that appears a moment later... A stroke of genius!
I randomly started listening to this video when it was automatically chosen on my RUclips mix. I don't have a single fucking idea whats going on but I love it.
Whatsamagiga It can be seen as a statement on how our world is getting more and more 'televised' and how the difference between what's real and what's TV is blurring (with things like constant new channels, reality shows, etc.).
Just wanna say I’ve watched this off and on for the better part of a decade, it’s literally the best slice of media genre/trope piece of art I’ve ever come across. I love what you do and wish I could find something comparable to this somewhere online
The whole list of events and reactions: Each show in order: LAP 1 Gray: Broadcasters/security feeds screen. They seem to be the ones controlling the shows, and start us off. The first two shows that show up appear in the same order to start us off. Greenish-Yellow - Ramen Shop. He changes the channel from the intro to an early glimpse of the checkout robbery. Also note the Strike Beer ad on the wall. Reddish-Orange - Motorcycle Race. No big secrets here, but it does have two screens, though one just has another view of the race. Blue with thick, sharp lines: Kaiju attack. The kaiju plays a much bigger role than the hero character we get a glimpse of. Purple with sharp lines: Studio Set. Initially just revealing that the kaiju attack was a show. I believe the kaiju is the only character we see drawn in two different colours Green: Old Folk's Kotatsu. You can actually still see just a bit of the Kaiju attack's blue - up until now, two shows deep has just been white screens Teal: Airport Romance scene Yellowish-Orange: Train Ride. The girl just pops some bubblegum she's chewing Pale green: 3D Fighter - interestingly, we can see that the two characters are named Lee (bald guy on the left) and kenji (shonen hair on the right). Kenji does a flying spinning two-legged kick attack, and gets some serious airtime. Red: Checkout robbery. Our first glance at Goutou the robber. Also, this time there are two screens, and we can see that both are showing 3d fighter - which is also named here. Blue and Scratchy: Police station. We can see two screens deep again, possibly because they rewind this footage rather than making more material. Purple and Scratchy: War drama. Two screens deep again. Green and Angular: News19. Nothing much to say. Orange and scratchy: Aliens Observing. Easily the most 'sloppy' looking style of all of them. Sea Green/Teal with black shading: Victory-Man Anime. I don't believe we ever see who he's fighting. Magenta and Sketchy - Anime Studio. They're sketching the show that Victory-man is from, which becomes important later. Indigo with Sharp lines and double-outlines: breakdancing rave. Interestingly, rather than showing two screens deep the normal way, the multiple screens at the top show both the anime and the anime's studio at the same level interchangeably. Pink with dotted shading: Strike Beer ad. It claims it has 0 kcal. We'll see about that. Green with wild faces: Oh, that's a baseball! Strike beer clearly has closely tied itself with baseball. It's Toyama vs. Nirin, with our pitcher being from Nirin. Broadcaster's room 2: The first scene to be revisited, Every single show is visible. When one of the guys has a microsleep, the screens start glitching out, until they all flash to Goutou, hinting that he's going to be the sctive catalyst of what's to come.
And now things start falling apart. LAP 2 Ramen Shop 2: Goutou speeds past the shop, making his getaway, and losing money everywhere Police Station 2: the police see this, and give chase. I think this is the last time we see the station itself? Train Ride 2: The police run across the station the train's pulling into, while goutou tries to blend in to the crowd. he's quickly spotted, and chased away. You can see another ad for Strike Beer in the background, and Goutou already has a wanted poster. Kaiju attack 2: Whether the kaiju is treated as "kaiju-sized" or "human-sized" will vary a lot, probably because of the sets. Here, he's human sized, as goutou looney-tunes himself into the wall and breaks the illusion Studio Set 2: Goutou knocked down the background, and now runs through the studio, knocking everything over. News19 2: You see the guy here trying to either joke with or flirt with the girl. She's not interested, possibly for reasons we'll see later, but when theyre caught on camera, he snaps back into position. War Zone 2: Gotou and the police cut through here, much to the reporter's shock. Motorbike race 2: Both gotou and the police seem to have taken some of the bikes for their own chase. Baseball 2: toyama strikes a home run, while the chase continues through the bleachers Rave 2: Goutou and the police chief join the dance for one pose. Interestingly, this transition seemingly breaks the golden rule of the mv - it shows the NEXT scene, instead of the previous baseball scene, while also showing the motorbike race 2 screens back again. This error also comes with it's own 2 screens deep moment, meaning that for a few frames as goutou enters, you can actually see a recursion of this moment in the tv of the next screen Victory-Man 2: goutou gets cut off and has to double back - meanwhile, the beam attack is still ongoing. Strike Beer 2: goutou steals the girl's beer when he gets the chance Old Folk's kotatsu 2: Goutou somehow got under the kotatsu. He leaves the pink can here, meaning this is the first time four colours are in one scene not including the display. that won't last. Broadcaster's room 3: They're trying to fix things, but when goutou knocks the microsleeper into the dashboard, all hell starts to break loose.
LAP 3 Ramen Shop 3: While Goutou and the police chase continues in the background, the tv at the ramen shop starts glitching, and the chef tries percussive maintenance. when the first few hits don't work, he hits it harder, which causes the whole world to glitch out and the background to shift several times to other scenes. Goutou jumps across the countertop. 3D Fighter 2: When he stops here, Goutou gets introduced as a new Challenger, with his own named health-bar in the bottom right. This is where we get his name from. He runs away again, and Kenji and Lee give chase. Kaiju 3 and Anime Studio 2: goutou and the 3d fighters dash through these places quickly, with nothing much to say, though Kenji chasing him consistently through the air with that spinning kick is pretty hilarious... Airport Romance 2: the spinning kick ends up knocking off the guy's toupee, revealing he's actually balding, much to the shock of his beloved, who he did manage to kiss. The hair lands on lee's bald head, and he loves it and decides to run off with it, forcing the toupee guy to give chase. Rave 3: Lee just skips through the rave, hilariously. for some reason, the second screen is the motorcycle race. Checkout robbery 2: Lee jumps on the counter, while toupee guy runs into it. This is the last time we see the checkout robbery scene. War zone 3: Lee's skipping again, but a missile lands right near him and toupee guy, sending them flying two ways, and the toupee a third direction. News19 3 and Alien Observers 2: The news guy is trying to flirt again, and she's still not interested. The toupee bounces off his head, reaching high up enough to nearly reach the aliens. Baseball 3: the nirin pitcher is confused and thinks the toupee is a ball. he throws it to first base, preventing the toupee guy from reclaiming it. Kaiju 4: The Wig lands on the Kaiju's face, blinding him and sending him hopping back. This is the first time the same scene is visited in one lap. Airport romance 3: there's a tense stalemate, as goutou has taken the airport romance girl hostage, and is surrounded by police - she is having a TERRIBLE day. However, an incoming blinded kaiju's foot sends the hostage and goutou flying. Train ride 3: the train passengers briefly spot the hostage and goutou flying... Anime Studio 3: before they land next to the sketching hand. the hand swipes away... Motorbike race 3: The hand's swipe creates a line that acts as a ramp, sending the motorbikers flying. War zone 4: The bikes get lodged under a tank, which fires a hectic shot past the reporter. said reporter is pretty much in the fetal position by this point. Baseball 4: The batter manages to strike the missile into the distance, with another home run. Rave 4: The raver's moves direct the missile to the right, while for the first time, all the screens at the top show the same thing at the same time. Ramen Shop 4: Kenji has taken a break to eat. The missile causes him to send the ramen flying behind him... the same direction the missile came from... Rave 5: I swear this scene hits some kinda milestone every time we come back, this time "shortest return time". He lets the ramen fly across his shoulders. Motorcycle Race 4: The Kaiju rampage is briefly paused by lee and toupee guy rushing along and lee recovering said toupee, but the ramen lands on it's face, causing it to freak out and breathe fire everywhere. Now other people are appearing kaiju-sized, meaning at this point reality is probably beyond saving. Anime Studio 4: The hand that's been in focus is still missing, which is probably a good thing, as the flame sets his area ablaze, including the victory-man panel he was drawing... Victory-man 3: Causing victory-man's reality to start burning away, forcing him to flee. Old Folk's kotatsu 3: They're again in a standoff, and now goutou has the old folks as hostages too. Victory-man bursts into the scene from behind Goutou, causing him and the police to freak out and shoot wildly at him. they miss him... Train Ride 4: But not the train riders, who somehow get peppered with the bullets. However, the studio calling cut seems to save them. Studio Set 3: The train riders are fine, thanks to the timely intervention. The director, however, was badly injured the last time goutou and the cops tore through here, and now victory-man leads them all through again, probably further injuring him. 3D Fighter 3: Maybe because they're in a fighting game, Victory-man makes his stand, firing his big laser which goutou barely dodges. At this point, we're getting scenes without ANY of the characters that are supposed to be there. Kaiju battle 5: now completely sans kaiju, Lee and toupee guy get caught tug-of-warring the toupee, with the laser firing right at them. Fortunately, their chrome domes reflect the laser, keeping them safe from the laser... Alien Observers 3: ...but the laser hits an alien ship, pissing them off and causing them to invade. Strike Beer 3: The drinkers now have slightly swollen bellies, either putting the lie in that Strike beer is 0kCal or saying they're being made to drinks tonnes of it to prove it. They're starting to look ill, as a fleet of ufos descend from the sky. News19 4: The female presenter reveals herself to be an alien in disguise, and she disintegrates the guy's face from how annoying he was being. He doesn't get a scene cut to save him. Kaiju 6: Now the aliens have replaced the kaiju here, chasing away the remaining civilians. The pilot hero finally reappears, calling his ship in... Airport romance 3: But as it flies in, it knocks a passenger plane out of balance, sending it spinning away. Motorbike Race 4: It hits the kaiju, sending him stumbling again. War Zone 5: The army and the alien invaders begin fighting, as the kaiju's foot sends more things flying. Rave 6: The Kaiju's still-ramened face smashes into the rave floor, sending the breakdancer flying. Once again the rave is involved in something really interesting... 3d Fighter 4: because the kaiju's face appearing in the rave happened when the kaiju smashed into the building the rave is being displayed on in the next scene outwards. We see now the army, the pilot hero, and the aliens all fighting. The war zone's reporter is reporting on the incredible scene, as goutou and the police run to the camera again. Broadcaster's room 4: Everything's broken here. The screens are all smashed and inoperable, and the microsleep guy who started this whole mess seems to be buried under the rubble.
FINAL LAP Motorcycle Race 5: Goutou nearly runs into traffic as the war continues on in the skies. he turns around and runs, seemingly bringing the motorbikes with him. News19 5: We pass the News19 guy's half-melted corpse, with goutou leaping onto the desk to dodge the motorbikes then doing a handstand to dodge some passing missiles. The woman-turned-alien is long gone. Strike Beer 4: The police manage to catch up to and cut off goutou again. Now with hugely swollen bellies, the drinkers are now clearly in pain, until the three way war results in some missiles landing in the ocean and causing a massive tsunami they barely can react to. Old folks Kotatsu 4: The pilot hero chases a ufo in the background, and goutou and the police run right past a dance number, with the train riders as backup dances, the raver as the star, and the old folks matching him move-for-move. At least until the tsunami washes everything away. Kaiju 7: When the wig lands on goutou's head, he's caught between two equally fierce wars - the soldiers of earth fighting the aliens to defend the entire planet, and lee and the toupee guy fighting to hide their bald patches. The latter is now in full "completely airborne combo showdown" mode. Kaiju City is the most-visited scene in the entire set. Ramen Shop 5: For the second time, the wrong video plays on screen - this time it's Old Folks Kotatsu 4 instead of Kaiju 7. The ramen shop owner is working hard to feed his customers - a kaiju city civillian, the airport romance turned hostage girl, and Victory man, who is very conspicuously Not Helping. Goutou's escape makes him jump through the food stand's open space, smashing the kaiju civillian's head through the countertop. 3D Fighter 5: Goutou lands on the ground and starts running towards the screen, as the aliens and soldiers fight in the background. He jumps over a line of motorcyclists, leans back to dodge some missiles as pilot hero swoops overhead, Straight up aquatically dives through an incoming strike beer tsunami as the hand, still sketching, comes up on the screen, Is sent flying by a crashed ufo as Lee and Toupee guy come fighting in from the left and the raver and old folks dance in from the right, Narrowly dodges the kaiju's incoming foot... just as the missiles he dodged cause a massive explosion in the background, causing the crashed ufo, lee and toupee guy, the pencil from the sketcher's hand, goutou, and the kaijus foot to all fly to the camera... Aftermath: where their bright colours turn into the colour test seen at the start, and the screen zoomes out on a seemingly new scene, with everything fully coloured. Rubble from all of the different shows is here... zooming out even further to reveal it's another set with two cameras. Broadcast room 5: and we zoom out one last time to a fully-intact, but empty, broadcaster's room. all the screens finally switch off.
I'm thanking you, five years later. I really liked how it made the yellow undead dancers from the public transit's dance at the old people's house stand out.

Whenever he shows up, everybody stops what they're doing to dance with him with perfect choreography.

I guess now that makes three!
And here we are, two years since six years ago.
This is a very under-rated masterpiece.
Still the best video on RUclips.

When it happens that part that weird me out the most is when everyone randomly step perfect synchronization to the beat every 10 seconds or so.
My favourite bit is where the old couple start break dancing.

I just noticed the Robber's name is revealed!

Never gets old, I see something new every time! To SUGIMOTO Kousuke and the team: great job!
The monochromatic style of each section really helps demonstrate the chaos portrayed within this animation, the backing song's pretty nice.
It seems to have partly been necessity, so the whole video didn't devolve to complete and unwatchable chaos. By giving each show's elements not just a different art style but another color, they did something better, with a particularly interesting aesthetic effect, as well as giving the viewers an almost perfect understanding as to what was happening.
Everything transpires so quickly that the colors are just plain needed to keep track of the events in the video, but the palettes and execution give it a bit of added charm. This video is sort of a tribute to the wonders of television, but ... well ... is it right for a tribute to be so much better than the thing it's a tribute to?
tv era is dead now RIP
TARS not really
I think the robber.... Broke the multilayered reality of the TV world he lived in..
TV'ception.
The way that the characters and their positions on the screen in the end correspond to the colors of the disconnected/errored TV that appears a moment later... A stroke of genius!
thank you very much! love it
I randomly started listening to this video when it was automatically chosen on my RUclips mix. I don't have a single fucking idea whats going on but I love it.
Whatsamagiga It can be seen as a statement on how our world is getting more and more 'televised' and how the difference between what's real and what's TV is blurring (with things like constant new channels, reality shows, etc.).
+Amit Haramaty Or its just an awesome music video with way to much going on to comprehend the first five times watching.
The moral of the story is that crime doesn't pay.
I guess this is some kind of butterfly effect.
Still one of the best music videos I have ever seen.. Love that little break at the busted up studio around 2:46.
Just wanna say I’ve watched this off and on for the better part of a decade, it’s literally the best slice of media genre/trope piece of art I’ve ever come across.
I love what you do and wish I could find something comparable to this somewhere online
Same here. If you do find something, let me know.
it's funny how the models get fat as they drink the "0 kcal" beer
To be fair, it's zero kcal, not volume xD
OMG The two bald guys fighting for the wig XD
I wear wigs (medical reasons) and honestly, that part delighted me the most XD Also when the wig keeps rebounding off of everything? Priceless.
Thanks r/anime! Good find!
I randomly remembered wtaching this 9 years ago and ad to see it again. Still amazing.
Still a classic. And a masterpiece. And a hell of a banger. 😎😩👌
2:55 break dancing grandma
That grandma got some mad moves!
The whole list of events and reactions:
Each show in order:
LAP 1
Gray: Broadcasters/security feeds screen.
I believe the kaiju is the only character we see drawn in two different colours
Green: Old Folk's Kotatsu. You can actually still see just a bit of the Kaiju attack's blue - up until now, two shows deep has just been white screens
Teal: Airport Romance scene
Yellowish-Orange: Train Ride. The girl just pops some bubblegum she's chewing
Pale green: 3D Fighter - interestingly, we can see that the two characters are named Lee (bald guy on the left) and kenji (shonen hair on the right).
LAP 2
Ramen Shop 2: Goutou speeds past the shop, making his getaway, and losing money everywhere
Police Station 2: the police see this, and give chase.
Here, he's human sized, as goutou looney-tunes himself into the wall and breaks the illusion
Studio Set 2: Goutou knocked down the background, and now runs through the studio, knocking everything over.
Baseball 2: toyama strikes a home run, while the chase continues through the bleachers
Rave 2: Goutou and the police chief join the dance for one pose. Interestingly, this transition seemingly breaks the golden rule of the mv - it shows the NEXT scene, instead of the previous baseball scene, while also showing the motorbike race 2 screens back again. This error also comes with it's own 2 screens deep moment, meaning that for a few frames as goutou enters, you can actually see a recursion of this moment in the tv of the next screen
Victory-Man 2: goutou gets cut off and has to double back - meanwhile, the beam attack is still ongoing.
Strike Beer 2: goutou steals the girl's beer when he gets the chance
Old Folk's kotatsu 2: Goutou somehow got under the kotatsu. He leaves the pink can here, meaning this is the first time four colours are in one scene not including the display. that won't last.
Broadcaster's room 3: They're trying to fix things, but when goutou knocks the microsleeper into the dashboard, all hell starts to break loose.
LAP 3
Ramen Shop 3: While Goutou and the police chase continues in the background, the tv at the ramen shop starts glitching, and the chef tries percussive maintenance. when the first few hits don't work, he hits it harder, which causes the whole world to glitch out and the background to shift several times to other scenes.
FINAL LAP
Motorcycle Race 5: Goutou nearly runs into traffic as the war continues on in the skies. he turns around and runs, seemingly bringing the motorbikes with him.
3D Fighter 5:
Goutou lands on the ground and starts running towards the screen, as the aliens and soldiers fight in the background.
He jumps over a line of motorcyclists,
leans back to dodge some missiles as pilot hero swoops overhead,
Straight up aquatically dives through an incoming strike beer tsunami as the hand, still sketching, comes up on the screen,
Is sent flying by a crashed ufo as Lee and Toupee guy come fighting in from the left and the raver and old folks dance in from the right,
Narrowly dodges the kaiju's incoming foot...
just as the missiles he dodged cause a massive explosion in the background, causing the crashed ufo, lee and toupee guy, the pencil from the sketcher's hand, goutou, and the kaijus foot to all fly to the camera...
@@Leafsw0rd Thanks for doing this. I'm betting it'll make some poor text-to-speech user's day. :)

I'm thanking you, five years later. I really liked how it made the yellow undead dancers from the public transit's dance at the old people's house stand out.
