I have a 710 that replaced my FT-891 as a 100w portable. I usually don't go far from my truck so the weight is not an issue. I also have a Xiegu G-90 in a backpack for the times I want to go farther in. All great radios in a particular situation. Thanks for the video and congratulations on the first summit to summit.
Thanks! The G90 was my first HF radio and it’s great for portable ops. I usually don’t go far from the car, so 100W radios aren’t an issue. But I have an ICOM 705 that I love for travel and hike-in activations.
Great video and activation. I have a 710 and use it for POTA activations. I'm not hiking with it, but it's awesome for picnic table or tailgate activations. I have it in an Apache case and it travels great. Hope to catch you on the air soon.
Yeah, I think the Yaesu 710, as well as the Icom 7300 and others, are great for parking lots and picnic tables. But the hike-in activations on summits or deep in the woods is another story. The radio is my club's, but I just bought an Apache case for it the other day as a donation. I want to make sure it stays in good shape so I can borrow it again, LOL. It'd be cool to get you in the log 710 to 710!!
It's a small world man, LOL. I still remember getting on 10m when I did a POTA and an ATNO. Maybe we'll get each other P2P and 710 to 710 sometime! I had to give the radio back to my club yesterday, but I'm sure I'll have it again.
@@MikeN2MAKyes that would be great thank you for just being awesome sorry I missed you on Sunday when you activated I went out on Saturday and didn’t really want to go out on Sunday 😂
That was awesome Mike ! Love them foldable wagons ! Best thing for camping and hiking. Bongoties are awesome ! The bands been great except 6 meters . A 100 watt radio draws about 20-22 amps on TX , That Denco did great ! Normally I bring a 20 AH or bigger. I made a 11 meter T2LT antenna for a friend. Tried it out after tuning with a nano VNA-H4 . I got 1.1SWR on CH 20 and great band with. east tune it for 12 and 10 meter if wanted or ATU . Just a piece of RG8X UK made coax. I got England ,Puerto rico, Jamecia ,and TX with FL and some CA stations . Just went vertical on 10 meter DX commander pole . Coil was made with 2.5 in PVC pipe . Many on CB can't believe I was talking on just coax ! The only PL259 was to radio . Love that ABR coax ! I got a choke like you got made buy ABR with RG 400 and SO 239 to PL 259 and heat shrink. It is awesome ! Made in TEXAS ! My main coax is M & P Pota flex 7 . It came as a kit with winder and case. Works 70CM down no problem and easy 1.5 KW and bright yellow ! Made in Italy ! and is K8MRD approved ! So is ABR coax ! The RG 8X UK made is mil spec. that great as well ! I got it in RG 58C/U as well . The 710 is a great radio as well. I have the IC 7300 and love it ! The only trouble I had with a 710 was that 3D waterfall but easy change . Does look neat ! But for hunting the STD. waterfall better. 73 from Boston NY ! Love the leaves !!!
Awesome! I''ve got my first CB coming and will look into a T2LT antenna for it. I like the ABR coax but need to try some of the M&P Airborne for dipoles and OCFD antennas to see if it's light enough not to put too much strain on a portable mast. Thanks for watching!
Hey, i was out working pota on that day and made contact with you P2P, and also made contact with the french and english station too. Thanks for the contact sir. Kd5pit
Awesome! I bet you had a blast too. i couldn't believe all the DX P2P and S2S stations calling me. 10m and even 20m was on fire! Thanks for getting in the log and checking out the video!
I dunno why people say the 710 isnt a field radio yet go and do pota with a 7300. You use what you have available and what works. I personally have taken my 710, 991 and 897 out to do potas.
The nice thing about the 7300 for field use is the SWR chart and Emergency Tuner. The 991a is fun for portable and is nice with all-band and all-mode. But, like you said, work with whatever you have and you'll be fine. Thanks for watching!
@@MikeN2MAKyea the swr thing would be a nice addition but i have my vna for that, and the 710 tuner is pretty decent tbh. Heck even tunes my short end fed on 160. Lol
Nice equipment and video. Thanks, but all that equipment and even a wagon to carry it all in just isn’t what I envision as a field operation. It’s more of a portable radio room. I use a KH1 or one of the QRP Labs or others radios, RG-316, 3Ah battery and wire antenna. I carry it all in a Carhartt Lunchbox. Different strokes, I guess. Thanks for your interesting video.
Thanks for checking out the video and I'm glad you found it interesting. I have an Icom 705 that I often use for the SOTA/POTA during the VHF contests. It's in a camera bag that weighs about 20-25 pounds. But I just got a much smaller pack to try with it and I'm going to see how much I can slim that down now.
The summit-to-summit contacts with Poland were on 10 meters and SSB. 10m was amazing and i got most of my DX on it that activation. Thanks for watching!
Too bad Gigaparts just raised the price on these. You're getting close to ICOM 7300 pricing, but apparently the 710 receive is much better and you can connect it to an external monitor. But Icom UI is usually easier for most people.
You nailed it! This is my club's 710 and they have an external monitor we use for it at events, which is a nice addition. The reports all say it's an excellent receiver. And for a bit, when they split it off into the "field" version without the extra speaker, it was more competitively priced. Still, it's good that there is competition and options.
I think the 710 a good radio and I've had fun with it. I prefer my Icom 7300 and 705, but everyone has their own preferences and operating style. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for catching that! I fixed it in the description. Here's the link to the ones I have too. There were a few other brands with the same thing, but at the time, these were the best priced. amzn.to/4eWK37V
@@MikeN2MAK Thanks Mike I enjoyed the video and just about to venture into Pota here in the uk. Next thing I need to understand is how the activators log works. Seems over complicated from the ADIF website stuff I’ve seen.
@@RobCanada HAMRS and POLO are 2 of the more popular apps for logging POTA. Both apps are available for Android and Apple, and will work on phones and tablets. HAMRS also has a computer app, which I believe is free, and will work on Mac, Windows and Linux. They are both designed for POTA and SOTA and are pretty easy to use. When finished with a log, you can export the ADIF file from the app via email, etc. There should be some good videos out there on how to use them.
I still don’t have a ham shack or anything setup at the house-I’m pretty much all portable. Good luck getting everything setup. I’m sure you’ll have fun with the radio!
Obviously you have never been a back packer. Backpackers are all about only bringing what you really need..You could drop 10 pounds of gear without even thinking hard. Hiking and vehicle activations are different animals.
I totally agree. I usually do SOTAs with my Icom 705, which is in a much smaller pack. This was still a fun challenge to see what I could bring and learn what I really could have done without.
