      The Yaesu 710 has a USB-B port on the back, which is common on HF radios (e.g. ICOM 7300), and also printers. I just use a USB-B to USB-A cable. When you go from 17m to 15m and so on, you drop it one more section for each band. Do you still have the extra few inches for 17m deployed, or do you retract it also when going to 15m? Hope this makes sense the way I’ve asked. Thanks for the videos!

    • @MikeN2MAK
      @MikeN2MAK 13 дней назад

      When I go from 17m to 15m, I take down the half section, and one more full section, so 1.5 total to jump from 17m to 15m. I just went to double-check, since I got a new car this spring. Sometimes the SWR will vary from car to car, but I only had to re-tune 1 of 4 hamsticks, so my new car has been pretty consistent with the previous one. Overall, here's my notes after re-testing: 20m is fully extended, 17m is 2.5 sections down, 15m is another 1.5 sections down (4 total down), 12m is another section down (5 down total), 10m is another down (6 down total), and 6m is simply the top 2 sections extended. Lastly, I use Shark Quick Disconnects, which do add a few inches to the antenna length. I hope that helps!

    @robertmeyer4744 16 дней назад

    That was very good Mike ! The AWA is great . I am sure you learned a lot from them. AM is a lot of fun ! 10 meter open helps as well. Most radios reduce power on AM because of carrier and both sidebands present. I have done 160 meter AM. For NY this is best like Dec and Jan into Feb. On a cold clear night . 160 meter will open right up and easy talk across country . Just need room for that Antenna. Their is a AM protation on 6 meters as well. You can do 2 Meter AM ! That is fun. The shortwave broadcast is mostly AM and some SSB . You really notice AM on QSB. You can still hear and copy just the volume drops and some noise. Not like FM . it goes to all static and no copy. Aircraft uses AM ! . My last visit to AWA some years ago pointed that out. Some digital modes will work on AM like SSTV . That just tones . We did that on CB with smartphone into mic . Also SMS TEXT MSG can be sent same way. just different app and tones. A FAX can be sent over AM. It is slow but that it how it was done at first. Just like over a landline . AM has done all that . Leering the history of AM is great and makes you want to use AM again. We still can ! AM POTA ! That was great ! 73 from Boston NY !

    Great job Mile. Some great parks ! Nice to cover all VHF and UHF bands . I even worked 2 meter AM and SSB . That really goes far. I made a end fed half wave just for 6 meters. tunes 1.2 SWR works great . I just string it up a DX commander pole. I wish the IC 705 had 1.25 meters. AM and SSB would go great on that band. 1.25 meters can open right up and go very far. 6 meters can be great . I suddenly can open and make amazing contacts but it can close just a fast as well. I made bunch FT8 on 6 meter when that hurricane came through from Texas last summer. Was not Sure if ducting or E layer but band was open nice for a while. When storm got real close the static made the bands un usable for me. Strong thunderstorms make a lot of lift and can open the bands . But when close to me I take my stuff down . I want to get some transverters to work more UHF bands . 73

      Thanks! I wish that the 705 and many other all-band/all-mode radios had 1.25m too. Someday I hope to be able to do weak signal modes on 1.25m, but for now it's limited to FM-only.

      I just used an online Yagi calculator at www.changpuak.ch/electronics/yagi_uda_antenna_DL6WU.php. Since I just had enough for 2 elements, it's simply a radiating element and the reflector--no director. I hope that helps!

      It was so much fun playing on FM, especially with the great conditions and all the activity on a contest weekend.

    Hello, modestly it seems to me that to understand the difference in audio quality between ICOM IC-7300 vs YAESU FT-710, it would be wise to take as a reference the ICOM IC-7400. Why? Personally, I believe that the manufacturer ICOM has made a huge mistake. ICOM focused primarily on a customer budget (sales price) of €1200 to produce its ICOM 7300. According to you, why today is the ICOM IC-7400 (25 years old) better in Rx than the YAESU FT-710 and ICOM IC-7300, and competes without complex with the FTDX10 at the Rx level ???🤔 Obviously, the design and the sales price of ICOM IC-7400 was well above ICOM IC-7300 (marketing date: 2015) Cordiales 73' Diki58

      I’m not familiar with the Icom IC-7400, but perhaps I’ll come across one sometime. My impressions of the Yaesu 710 vs. Icom 7300 are based on my style and preference for operating portable, such as POTA and SOTA. I do believe the 710 was priced too high at first, but Yaesu has addressed that. Now the 7300 seems to be priced high, especially for its age with newer radios, like the 710 and DX10. Ultimately, it is alway good to have options and competition.

    This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you for making this! By the way, have you tried using M17 with the Mobilink? Wonder if that would also work on the IC-705 for digital that way.

      I’m glad it helped! I haven’t tried M17 yet. It is something I’d like to try. But I’ve yet to try D-STAR or even AllStar, so I might end up trying those modes first.

    Nice video. On the other hand I am not a fan of Marconi. Why? Because, aside from the initial experimentation that led to his trip to visit the British Post Office, all else was pretty much the outcome of engineers he gave no or little credit to & often just the buyout of someone elses work.

      Thanks for watching! That’s interesting to hear. I don’t know much about the history of Marconi.
