In the anime fanbase, there's almost no one who hasn't heard of Kyoto Animation and it's fair to say that their visual style is has become distinctive at this point. So this time, for Christmas, we take a look at a studio that doesn't have much correlation to the holidays.

Kyoto Animation studio is burning.. This so heart breaking!
sad man.....
F
Yea devastating
We support you, kyoani!!
But.. The loss of 33 animators, and emotional scar of the arson will be tough to overcome..
F
Kyoani is probably the best anime studio i've ever seen.
simply because how consistent their work are.
+Armansyah Masdipura consistently average...
+AmDr4g0n Consistently not fulfilling their potential.
+AmDr4g0n You can stop spreading hate and all the BS talks now. If the reason why you're calling them average is because they reproduce "the same" materials over and over again, then you probably haven't watched enough anime to judge them. If I have your mindset, I would have called all slice of life anime the same.
raykrislianggi - AniMusic
Please read all my comments and you will find that I have very good reasons why I find the show unremarkable. Here is a hint: It's not because all kyoani shows have the same character progression...
AmDr4g0n As far as I see it in your own comments, it's either you don't even get what their shows are about and what they're trying to deliver, or it's just that these kind of shows are not for you. Perhaps you should also stop over-complicating your comments to make yourself like you know everything.
Most of your comments repeat the same things over and over again *WITHOUT A SINGLE* concrete point as to why any of their show is bad, and I do see your complaint on character progression over and over again. *You're complaining about things that shouldn't be complained about on a slice-of-life show*, then proceeded to state that their shows are "consistently average". There's none of their show that's "average" in my book. Even their recent shows with the same style / artwork, theme, etc, I find that each of their shows have their own appeal.
As a long-term musician, I can perfectly relate myself to the characters and settings in Hibike Euphonium, something that even the much hyped Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso failed to do, and that's more than enough to convince me that it's a good show. Clannad brought me into anime world, and after all these years of hunting for new anime, it's still the best show I've watched. In literally *EVERY* show that they worked on, the amount of detail and effort they poured into the animation is ahead of everyone else in the industry.
In conclusion, I find your comments complaining about things that shouldn't be complained pointlessly repetitive, and I take calling the show "average" as an unnecessary insult that doesn't make sense.
Well...now I wanna watch more Kyoto animation stuff! Thanks Matt! Interesting as ever!
+Otaku-Vs watch K-On pls ;-;
+Otaku-Vs K-On! is the high point of KyoAni. After it they stopped trying and copied K-On's formula in pretty much every show they made. Now everything they make is a weaker version of K-On with a gimmick to blind the simple minded casual anime fans from seeing that KyoAni has been selling them the same shit but worse.
+AmDr4g0n "Now everything they make is a weaker version of K-On" I seriously don't see how you think that Chuunibyou, Nichijou, Tamako Market/Love Story, Hyouka, Free!, Kyoukai no Kanata, Amagi Brilliant Park, or Hibike Euphonium are "weaker versions of K-On", or even remotely similar.
+Dan Cook K-On: cute girls doing cute things with this as a core narrative: MC going through adolescence unsure of himself until he/she realises --->Finding a place you belong to and being surrounded by people you care about is the key to a happy life.
Everything else is cute [blank] doing cute [blank] + gimmick they try to take seriously, with MC going through adolescence unsure of himself until he/she realises ---> Finding a place you belong to and being surrounded by people you care about is the key to a happy life, as the main character progression.
They do a poor job at exploring the gimmick and since standard KyoAni character progression is only a sub-plot and was done perfectly in K-On, it fills like a rehash.
We can go over how every gimmick fails if you wish and how every character progression is the same thing through different means of discovering it.
+AmDr4g0n it's referred to as the slice of life genre ya know and honestly there's a huge difference in character and even how the shows feel from K-On! They all have cute character designs and they often do cute things but how does that make them.weaker versions of K-On?
VIOLET FUCKING EVERGARDEN WHERE YOU AT.
ITS AT 2017
Mike Metcalf SHIT FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
Hopefully K-On season 3 never happens
Zak Does it really need to?
Sardrellas ikr we need evergarden i love their music
Kyoto Animation creates the heart of everything I love about Japan. Their work ethic, their perception on life, their teamwork, the dialogue in the anime, the themes...I would love to go to the studio just to say thank you :)
+Stephaney Ferguson .. Very True!!! i feel like the same!
It got burnt :-(
Now everything is sadly ruined
"KyoAni is a studio full of peoples who want to make good anime".
This is by far one of the greatest sentence I've ever heard, this is how the perfection in anime studio is supposed to be.
And this is how KyoAni works.
I didn't know KyoAni made a hentai! Thanks RCAnime.
+Kevin Nyaa mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
+RCAnime make a video on gundam making a comeback please
+Kevin Nyaa If you're talking about the anime at 0:58, Ane Yome Quartet-- that, Kokoro Connect, and Non Non Biyori aren't KyoAni productions. RCAnime just said that it appears that KyoAni had influenced them.
+Kevin Nyaa No they don't and probably never will. It was the studio by the name of Mary Jane that made the hentai ova at 0:58
+Meow Neko so he got his facts mixed up there?
I will never regret purchasing a KyoAni anime, even if I don't like it. At least I'm supporting a studio that pays and treats their staff well and, arguably as a result, produces exceptionally good looking products. It doesn't hurt that I love most of their stuff.
I love Kyoto Animation, and knowing this about this just makes me respect them more.
Give that respect to the victims of the fire :-(
Im here because of the fire that had happened in Kyoani and the 33 that had perished. a BIG BIG thankyou for showing off their work in such a beautiful way and having such a great commentary behind it. You can tell they had an insane amount of passion in their work and it really shows so much. R.I.P Those beautiful works of art and humans that brought life to it all. ❤️
R.I.P all the greatest staffs
I'm super excited for KyoAni's adaptation of Koe no Katachi. I adore Naoko Yamada-directed stuff.
Yeah I haven't read the manga but people keep saying Koe no Katachi is awesome so I was literally screaming when I heard KyoAni is going to make the movie adaption of it.
Kinda sad tho, because it's only a movie not a full series
+Frederick Aaron Ajose heck, the manga serialization become sucks and forced. Its good as a one-shot for a manga and movie/ova
Ahhhhhh it's so good!!!
One of victims in fire at kyoani
The building was on fire today 18-07-2019 and sadly more than 20 people died -_- (I love Kyoto Animation and the people there their work is amazing and I hope everything will be better soon)
F
death toll is 33 now one of the directors that made things like clannad is missing and is most likely dead
When I saw Hibiki Euphonium, Kyoto Ani instantly became a top 3 studio
+_ Hans _ But..... It's a bad anime with nice animation and pretty colours. ;_;
+Zaaqi I recall liking the show, why is it bad?
+Zaaqi Yep.
+Zaaqi If i may ask, How is it bad
+Sean Fisher I recall thinking that while it was a decent show there are far too many "decent" shows and I need the stuff that I watch to be high quality in all respects not only sound and art.
You forgot to mention the most important reason KyoAni managed to start their own brand : the huge commercial success that was K-On!
K-On! was like the fourth biggest selling series in terms of CD/DVD sales (it was first, before Monogatari, then Madoka, then Osomatsu-san)
Was like the second (I think) biggest selling series in figurines (behind Symphogear, was it?)
But, more importantly: HTT! was a huge artist they actually held Oricon #! a number of times with number of different songs.
And during their days they were more famous than even effing Hatsune Miku.
The share KyoAni got from K-On! was so huge they can use (and used) that to establish their own publishing press.
It also won 2 gold records the only anime to have a gold record. It wasn't until Love Live won a gold record that another anime won it.
Abraham Benedict k-on love :)
To be honest their real start was The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. That thing was huge in its time. It was then followed up by Lucky Star and then later K-On!
Let's face it, KyoAni had a string of successful animations under their helm, BUT, i think, and it's partly acknowledged or hinted at in the video, their success is mostly due to a good hand on the wheel. Trigger has done some pretty darn solid things, on par, i'd say, with KyoAni, and in some regards far above the rest of the pack, but, let's face it (x2), they don't have the same solid steering that these guys do.
And it's good, i think KyoAni will be the driving force behind the reinvention (once again) of anime. Lately, mostly due to pretty shitty monetary and time practices, studios in Japan had gone pretty stale in their final results. Uneven blend of animation, unmatched songs, seiyuu being poorly chosen, etc.
On a side note, adjusted for time (in correlation with the internet, media, spread of anime consumption over-borders (France, second only to Japan itself), age group focus, even the youth mentality and influences of the political kind) the Haruhi series were every bit as a hit as K-On. I mean, at the time, big shot racers were wrapping their cars in the stuff, there were figurines galore, even in France, i remember seeing a few Anime shops having merch on the topic, within months of the half air, which was pretty darn quick.
In fairness, it's all thanks to the successes of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and K-ON! Each of these series were only a year apart from one another and all three were massive successes that solidified KyoAni as one of the best anime studios. It was only after these three that KyoAni could do Tamako Market, Hyouka, Free!, and Hibike! Euphonium.
_The ending made me cry with the beautiful crying scene_ xD
Tamako Market set to the Up OST - you sir are a goddamn genius
+Subsonic Sparkle I'm pretty that's Inside Out OST.
+Subsonic Sparkle I'm pretty that's Inside Out OST.
+Joshua Yong I was talking about 5:13, but yes they he does play Inside Out at one point
the opening. good choice for opening
Tamako Market is
In my honest opinion, Andrew Stanton's lecture on what makes a good story is something that everyone should listen to at least once in their lives. Very informative video for people who don't take the intricacies of KyoAni seriously. But god damn it, I've been sitting on using that lecture in a video for months now ; . ;
+MrAJcosplay I only used a small portion. There's tons of material in that lecture to use, do it!
+MrAJcosplay what happend to the pod cast? i fucking love hearing you guys talk
+Caden Richter Matt has a new podcast you can check out called roku Ronin
+MrAJcosplay great! thanks.
Where do I find it?
R.I.P Kyoani you will always have a special place in my heart
KyoAni is one of the best studios ever formed
+fidomaster447 Just wish they made half-decent shows.
"Watching a Kyoto Animation anime is like being served up a delicious cake. It’s the same cake every time but you know what to expect." - Some guy on the internet.
+Reinhard von Lohengramm couldn't disagree more! I actually feel like KyoAni has a very wide range of shows they make, they're just all focusing on the Slice of Life genre.
Euphonium is an incredibly different show from K-On, Chuunibyou an incredibly different show from Free and almost all of them in my opinion have very well written characters and drama and if nothing else, like in K-On's case they make for an extremely comfortable watch, that still features fantastic writing.
+Reinhard von Lohengramm Personally, from every KyoAni show I have seen, I have thoroughly enjoyed them all, with Hyouka and Kyoukai no Kanata being some of my favorites. But, to each their own. Like what was said in the video, even you do not like their work, what they are doing in the industry is revolutionary and respectable.
+Reinhard von Lohengramm what about madhouse
+Kori Anime madhouse toei animation studio perriot
So sad what today happened
But still no Nichijou Season 2...
...
Wasn't Nichijou a commercial flop?
+destiny fucker Yeah it was, unfortunately
+Kibler Besides being flop it's not their IP
+destiny fucker animes are basically advertisements for light novels and mangas
+Refracted Edits true animes are basically advertisements for manga and light novels not every anime is going to be a one piece with 700 episodes
Now *that* was a phenomenal essay, RC! Loved hearing this about one of the best animation studios there is! :D
Underrated and hated by the most stupid people around(most of them are from the west). Their shows with some exceptions are very well directed.
I know is difficult to do what kyoani does because is risky but there are studios in a position to do it. Hibike wasn't a original IP of them and they brought the rights for that novel.
The problems with kyoani are pretty common in the industry( scripts). BTW people don't have a clue what character development is. You hate them so much that you don't understand that k-on was a series about friendship and adolescence.
Naoko Yamada is a very good director, one of the best in the industry. She has her own voice .
The people who hate KyoAni are usually shounen junkies who only watch stuff like Naruto, and whom are either too young, too immature, or too dim to appreciate the depth and care that goes into a KyoAni show.
@@purplespectre most of them just want to watch angry edgelords fighting each other. They wouldn't appreciate something philosophical, just because it's not action
@@LL-oq5sf True. There's very likely an intersection between those who hate KyoAni and those who hate deep and philosophical anime (e.g. Angel's Egg). Though it's worth bearing in mind they are still separate groups; there are people who do appreciate philosophical anime who hate KyoAni because they think their shows lack depth (of course, they're wrong).
I still can't believe the content produced by RCAnime, all of it is amazing.
This was heartbreaking. I can’t believe it happened. A lot of my favorite anime shows and movies are from Kyoto Animation. May they rest in peace 💕
5:58: The best stories are infused wonder...values you personally feel deep down into your core.
THIS is why the staff at KyoAni who lost their lives and severely injured will never be forgotten.
Everytime we watch their anime, we feel them and all their wonder.
I'm SOOO in sync with this guy when he talks about anime. I've only seen two videos but i can tell i'm going to love what he has to say for upcoming future vids.
kyoani's art style is sooo beautiful
And now, unfortunately, the studio is on fire .
Press F to pray respects
Man, this is so sad. Why KyoAni?
Jenny Ha there was this one guy who got made at kyoto animation for using his special catch phrase he thought he made up but was actually a shortened name for an instrument for hibike and he was also a fan of train photography and when kyoani teamed up with kyoto's train company to make trains with kyoani animes on them he was pissed and thats why he burnt the studio down
(tldr a guy was angry that they used "his" catchphrase and that kyoani put anime on trains)
@@kongoubongou9595 there's no evidence to that rumor so stop spreading it. The official news has said that he specified they plagiarized his novel
@• b u b b l e s • ruclips.net/video/BPzeO5iPJ4M/видео.html RCAnime mentions Yoshiji Kogami - RIP, such a tragic loss of talents by a deranged individual.
KyoAni has made so many of my favorite animes including Violet Evergarden, Free!, Chuunibyo, K-on!, Hyouka, A Silent Voice, and Hibike! Euphonium- AND I had no idea they were all from the same studio till now
Just huge respect to Kyoani. You just can see how detailed and how much love they put in their work to created such a beautiful animation. Thanks for the video bro..
I love KyoAni
I absolutely agree with you regarding the studio's influence on the future of anime. Great video : )
I got to know them through clannad and i'll always love them making that adaptation
Yeah, i'll never forget clannad, i don't even think kyoto animation thought it was going to pull off THAT good.
Lmao I watched Lucky Star when I was really young on youtube haha didn't even know Kyoto Animation made it.
I'm disappointed that you barely show Hyouka clips. . :C
bruh same
I realized my eyes were a bit wet as the video's end credit rolling. Why did such tragedy have to happen onto something we love so much? Those passionate souls that have given us many beautiful anime productions, may they have their peace.
i cannot think of anything made by kyoto animation that wasn't at least worth watching, about 9/10 of their projects were damned good if not awesome, and Haruhi Suzumiya is still one of the greatest anime ever created, the stories told are mostly interesting and the art is always beautiful,
I love kyoto animation so much!!! ♥
You report about the studio was super interesting!!! There was not even a second boredom in it - including the background music and all! You've got a really amazing talent for this!! LOVE IT! ♥ Keep it up!
Beautiful animation :D
I'm told KyoAni is also the studio with the best workd ethics - besides P.A. Works maybe.
Soooo much quality in kyotoanime and in your videos too!
My heart goes out to those directly affected by the arson attack. KyoAni is a true pioneer of art and animation and their business ethics and practices show this. I hope the studio can survive and make a comeback, but more importantly I wish the victims all the best from the bottom of my heart
Watched this when you first uploaded it and I'm still shocked at how few views there are. It still holds up really well, especially now. I might be crying.
I think the ultimate reason Kyoani is so popular is the feelings we get watching them (apart from the great animation). Watching Kyoani feels real. I seriously dont know how to say it. sometimes I get a sense of nostalgia watching them. Like I'm there with the characters. Kyoani shows is the ones where you just wanna watch after a stressful day and just do nothing. You get what I'm saying here?
Man, oh man! That was a wonderful video! For us, long-term anime fans, we feel every single ounce of effort spent on making a show. It is all in the small details. From the background design, to the subtle body movements, to the lighting and finally, the smoothness and consistency of the animation. With all that in mind, I find the shows coming from KyoAni to be visually breathtaking. I am glad there are people still willing to spend time making videos to credit visual artists that deserve the credit.
so sad we've lost a lot of talented people there due the arson in their studio :(
That moment when you went out of the video full screen after 8:08
BUT THEN TAMAKO MARKET ED COMES UP AND YOU PUT THAT FULL SCREEN BACK ON
Toei, please take note. We all know you have amazing animators there!
And a budget that is next to none!
Wow! I never knew KyoAni has their own school of animators! That's hecka cool~ **claps**
Thanks for making this video! :D
Rest in Peace to these great people
Takemoto Yasuhiro, the director of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and Hyouka.
Kawanami Eisaku, Director of Free!
Nishiya Futoshi, Director of A Silent Voice
Nishiya Futoshi, character designer for HYOUKA, Nichijou
Kadowaki Miku, Animation Director for Miss kobayashi's Dragon maid
Exactly how many of those are confirmed deaths?
@@beta511ee4 33 confirmed dead
You totally missed over the fact that Kyoto Animation were outsourced animation house for mostly Sunrise for almost 20 years before they got their hands on Full Metal Panic Fumofuu.
"It must evoke wonder! And not artificially!" :3
When I watched a certain scene from Hyouka and Hibike, I cried inwardly. Mainly because the way they hit me viscerally was something I haven't encountered - their themes on trying to become better at our skill sets, about reaching glass ceilings, about competition, and competition within friendship... I can't even describe it. It's a difference sense of wonder.
There's a certain magical element to the way KyoAni shows look. I had watched Hibike! Euphonium for the 3rd time and was still amazed by the use of color, the animation of characters and the incredible backgrounds.
Your videos don't stop getting better, I love it
Kyoto Ani saving anime not once but twice first with the whole Moe boom because of K-ON ad now with their revolutionary anime production.
I've been watching your videos, please continue with your amazing job 'cause i feel it helps not only to anime fans to open up to other pieces of media, i believe it help to other people who study animation, cinematography or in my case musical production. I hope you do more videos related to the music and sound design in anime because i loved the Shinichiro, classical music and the sound mixing in lain videos.
Every time I see Hyouka, I instantly come.
why do you make me feel feels, my feels have gone way Up
Watching this after the fire incident is just so hearbreaking.
Didn't realise they made some of their own anime sources themselves, I feel that helps with how they express emotion and what they want to achieve with certain scenes, which are animated superbly
R.I.P Kyoto animation T^T condolence.. legend live!!
Holup THE “Kyoukai no Kanata”, that masterpiece, was made my graduates? Holy fuck i feel pathetic
Man, this video is so good. You're doing awesome work.
KyoAni is the Nintendo of the anime industry
+MarioLover76 More like Pixar...
+MarioLover76 They're both based on Kyoto too
+qpopuiuzmnmb I'd say Studio Ghibli is Pixar.
Then who’s the Disney of anime?
+diajeng salmaa putri Miyazaki of course!
KyoAni has been my favorite studio for years. Their work is simply pristine and as such I used to keep their logo over my head at my drawing workstation as a goal. Nice work!
This is why KyoAni is my favourite studio.
I pray for KyoAni's recovery. The fire is a blow for a studio that only have 150 employees and may those who had died rest in peace.
Rest in peace to all the lives taken by the arson attack.
Thank you for posting this on Christmas eve this is literally the best present I've gotten.
That was extremely touching. I love many of Kyoto Ani's works. Even their earlier adaptions of the Key light novels. Clannad is my all time favorite and has pulled me through a lot of rough times. Though you're right--it is sort of like PIXAR in how they're revolutionary and yet have a very simple, yet wonder-filled, heart-warming feel to each show. They can make you cry and laugh in the same episode.
WHY AM I TEARING AT THE END OF THE VIDEO?
I read somewhere that companies based on Kyoto tend to follow a different business model than the rest of Japan. Nintendo is another one of those. I wonder if that has anything to do with that.
They're not set in the city of Kyoto thought, they're set in Uji.
Luc Hayward I guess they probably meant around the region, not only the proper city
The first documentary-like video I've seen that's given me actual chills. The editing and information in this video really inspires me!
My heart is breaking. #PrayForKyoAni 🙏
As of July 20, 33 people have died and 39 more hospitalized. It's a truly devastating tragedy not just for KyoAni, but to the Anime industry as a whole. Being known for having the best work culture among anime studios, KyoAni is a beloved part of my anime fandom.
As of now the Gofundme campaign organised by Sentai Filmworks has gathered more than $1.6Mil and i'm truly glad to be a part of such community.
I hope KyoAni heals and gets back on with the support of the community.
One of things i love about KyoAni is..... They know how to dress up their characters
You really captured my love for KyoAni's work with this video with the great editing you did with this video and your writing.
Just beautiful.
The more Kyoto works I watch, the more I appreciate them and want to keep learning about them. The same is true for "analysis" videos such as this. I've only begun to sample their shows/movies, and I can't wait to experience more.
I now understand why you wouldn't tell me what you were making - it's literally just every conversation we've had about KyoAni since we've met.
wow, your channel has been a god-sent-gift for me. I was losing interest in anime for a while now, because none of the new shows appealed to me. But seeing your videos was really refreshing and makes me hope for anime again. thanks dude
Kyoto Animation is one of my favorite anime studio
the first anime I've watched from kyoani is one of Haruhi. I was drawn by the sheer display of the live alive concert which I found on youtube by chance. then I come to know this studio to the point every season, I check if this studio make any series !!! always happy to see their animation !!
so excited to see the Kitachi film. it's going to be goddamn emotional seeing my favourite story ever written by the studio that inspires me to no end
Whoa, the Inside Out and UP music fits with KyoAni ridiculously well. Nice pick, good sir, nice pick.
seriously DUDE !! well done this video was put together so well and so nice for someone to go into depth about why Kyoto animation are different from other studios :) really enjoyed your video keep up the awesome work :)
I'll just add Death Death Dekomori desu!
Bro, just thought I should say this, but your editing is so on point. Well done.
2023 i really miss kyoani anime, i hve watched all their anime
This video was well put together, thank you!
woah woah woah KyoAni + inside out would be the most adorable and heartbreaking creation ever
oh man, I LOVE your videos! :) this videos was great. Reminded me of everyframeapainting :) You deserve more recognition.
and yea, KyoAni is awesome!
Just by looking at some of the visuals of kyoani is enough to make me cry.
I have been wtaching so many kyoani videos that now it became my favourite studio
You and your editorials really make
me smile. :)
With every word towards the end it hurts even more..

I can't believe I never found this channel earlier, you have basically everything I want to learn about anime.
Keep up the great work, and you have yourself another follower. Thanks man :)
Three videos watched and I'm sold. Your stuff is quite interesting and highly enjoyable, keep it up!
wow, this was really well done , nice work
