    In the anime fanbase, there's almost no one who hasn't heard of Kyoto Animation and it's fair to say that their visual style is has become distinctive at this point. So this time, for Christmas, we take a look at a studio that doesn't have much correlation to the holidays.

      +AmDr4g0n You can stop spreading hate and all the BS talks now. If the reason why you're calling them average is because they reproduce "the same" materials over and over again, then you probably haven't watched enough anime to judge them. If I have your mindset, I would have called all slice of life anime the same.

      raykrislianggi - AniMusic
      Please read all my comments and you will find that I have very good reasons why I find the show unremarkable. Here is a hint: It's not because all kyoani shows have the same character progression...

    • @raykrislianggi
      @raykrislianggi 8 лет назад +20

      AmDr4g0n As far as I see it in your own comments, it's either you don't even get what their shows are about and what they're trying to deliver, or it's just that these kind of shows are not for you. Perhaps you should also stop over-complicating your comments to make yourself like you know everything.
      Most of your comments repeat the same things over and over again *WITHOUT A SINGLE* concrete point as to why any of their show is bad, and I do see your complaint on character progression over and over again. *You're complaining about things that shouldn't be complained about on a slice-of-life show*, then proceeded to state that their shows are "consistently average". There's none of their show that's "average" in my book. Even their recent shows with the same style / artwork, theme, etc, I find that each of their shows have their own appeal.
      As a long-term musician, I can perfectly relate myself to the characters and settings in Hibike Euphonium, something that even the much hyped Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso failed to do, and that's more than enough to convince me that it's a good show. Clannad brought me into anime world, and after all these years of hunting for new anime, it's still the best show I've watched. In literally *EVERY* show that they worked on, the amount of detail and effort they poured into the animation is ahead of everyone else in the industry.
      In conclusion, I find your comments complaining about things that shouldn't be complained pointlessly repetitive, and I take calling the show "average" as an unnecessary insult that doesn't make sense.

      +Otaku-Vs K-On! is the high point of KyoAni. After it they stopped trying and copied K-On's formula in pretty much every show they made. Now everything they make is a weaker version of K-On with a gimmick to blind the simple minded casual anime fans from seeing that KyoAni has been selling them the same shit but worse.

    • @dcresistance
      @dcresistance 8 лет назад +14

      +AmDr4g0n "Now everything they make is a weaker version of K-On" I seriously don't see how you think that Chuunibyou, Nichijou, Tamako Market/Love Story, Hyouka, Free!, Kyoukai no Kanata, Amagi Brilliant Park, or Hibike Euphonium are "weaker versions of K-On", or even remotely similar.

    • @AmDr4g0n

      +Dan Cook K-On: cute girls doing cute things with this as a core narrative: MC going through adolescence unsure of himself until he/she realises --->Finding a place you belong to and being surrounded by people you care about is the key to a happy life.
      Everything else is cute [blank] doing cute [blank] + gimmick they try to take seriously, with MC going through adolescence unsure of himself until he/she realises ---> Finding a place you belong to and being surrounded by people you care about is the key to a happy life, as the main character progression.
      They do a poor job at exploring the gimmick and since standard KyoAni character progression is only a sub-plot and was done perfectly in K-On, it fills like a rehash.
      We can go over how every gimmick fails if you wish and how every character progression is the same thing through different means of discovering it.

    You forgot to mention the most important reason KyoAni managed to start their own brand : the huge commercial success that was K-On!
    K-On! was like the fourth biggest selling series in terms of CD/DVD sales (it was first, before Monogatari, then Madoka, then Osomatsu-san)
    Was like the second (I think) biggest selling series in figurines (behind Symphogear, was it?)
    But, more importantly: HTT! was a huge artist they actually held Oricon #! a number of times with number of different songs.
    And during their days they were more famous than even effing Hatsune Miku.
    The share KyoAni got from K-On! was so huge they can use (and used) that to establish their own publishing press.

    • @aserta

      Let's face it, KyoAni had a string of successful animations under their helm, BUT, i think, and it's partly acknowledged or hinted at in the video, their success is mostly due to a good hand on the wheel. Trigger has done some pretty darn solid things, on par, i'd say, with KyoAni, and in some regards far above the rest of the pack, but, let's face it (x2), they don't have the same solid steering that these guys do.
      And it's good, i think KyoAni will be the driving force behind the reinvention (once again) of anime. Lately, mostly due to pretty shitty monetary and time practices, studios in Japan had gone pretty stale in their final results. Uneven blend of animation, unmatched songs, seiyuu being poorly chosen, etc.
      On a side note, adjusted for time (in correlation with the internet, media, spread of anime consumption over-borders (France, second only to Japan itself), age group focus, even the youth mentality and influences of the political kind) the Haruhi series were every bit as a hit as K-On. I mean, at the time, big shot racers were wrapping their cars in the stuff, there were figurines galore, even in France, i remember seeing a few Anime shops having merch on the topic, within months of the half air, which was pretty darn quick.

    • @purplespectre
      @purplespectre 5 лет назад +1

      In fairness, it's all thanks to the successes of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and K-ON! Each of these series were only a year apart from one another and all three were massive successes that solidified KyoAni as one of the best anime studios. It was only after these three that KyoAni could do Tamako Market, Hyouka, Free!, and Hibike! Euphonium.

      +Reinhard von Lohengramm couldn't disagree more! I actually feel like KyoAni has a very wide range of shows they make, they're just all focusing on the Slice of Life genre.
      Euphonium is an incredibly different show from K-On, Chuunibyou an incredibly different show from Free and almost all of them in my opinion have very well written characters and drama and if nothing else, like in K-On's case they make for an extremely comfortable watch, that still features fantastic writing.

    Underrated and hated by the most stupid people around(most of them are from the west). Their shows with some exceptions are very well directed.
    I know is difficult to do what kyoani does because is risky but there are studios in a position to do it. Hibike wasn't a original IP of them and they brought the rights for that novel.
    The problems with kyoani are pretty common in the industry( scripts). BTW people don't have a clue what character development is. You hate them so much that you don't understand that k-on was a series about friendship and adolescence.
    Naoko Yamada is a very good director, one of the best in the industry. She has her own voice .

    i cannot think of anything made by kyoto animation that wasn't at least worth watching, about 9/10 of their projects were damned good if not awesome, and Haruhi Suzumiya is still one of the greatest anime ever created, the stories told are mostly interesting and the art is always beautiful,

    I think the ultimate reason Kyoani is so popular is the feelings we get watching them (apart from the great animation). Watching Kyoani feels real. I seriously dont know how to say it. sometimes I get a sense of nostalgia watching them. Like I'm there with the characters. Kyoani shows is the ones where you just wanna watch after a stressful day and just do nothing. You get what I'm saying here?

    Man, oh man! That was a wonderful video! For us, long-term anime fans, we feel every single ounce of effort spent on making a show. It is all in the small details. From the background design, to the subtle body movements, to the lighting and finally, the smoothness and consistency of the animation. With all that in mind, I find the shows coming from KyoAni to be visually breathtaking. I am glad there are people still willing to spend time making videos to credit visual artists that deserve the credit.

    "It must evoke wonder! And not artificially!" :3
    When I watched a certain scene from Hyouka and Hibike, I cried inwardly. Mainly because the way they hit me viscerally was something I haven't encountered - their themes on trying to become better at our skill sets, about reaching glass ceilings, about competition, and competition within friendship... I can't even describe it. It's a difference sense of wonder.

    That was extremely touching. I love many of Kyoto Ani's works. Even their earlier adaptions of the Key light novels. Clannad is my all time favorite and has pulled me through a lot of rough times. Though you're right--it is sort of like PIXAR in how they're revolutionary and yet have a very simple, yet wonder-filled, heart-warming feel to each show. They can make you cry and laugh in the same episode.

    As of now the Gofundme campaign organised by Sentai Filmworks has gathered more than $1.6Mil and i'm truly glad to be a part of such community.
