I’m married to one of Elmers descendants who is his absolute spitting image. Always creeps me out when I come across Elmer’s story. He never told me about him but one day I caught something on tv. I texted my then boyfriend “um, William, do you know anything about an Elmer McCurdy?” He laughed and said “You found Elmer, huh???” I wish I could post the side-by-side pic on here. LOL

Welp, if ghosts do exist then he's either been laughing his bones out this whole time, or been yelling at everyone to just let him sleep, and no one can hear him.

Geez, I mean he wasn't a good guy but no one deserves to have their corpse bought, sold, displayed, and toured without their consent

Far from the worst ever done to someone before or after life.

Remind me again, about the Bible's thinking on "Worship of the graven image"... I can't think of much more worshipful than swearing up and down how consecrated and serious a corpse (literally graven) has to be treated... It's so much rotting meat...
...and no... I don't much care WHAT the hell anyone does with or to my corpse when I'm gone. I'll (by nature of the terms) BE GONE... ;o)

That guy was more successful as a mummy than back when he was alive. He even made it into a filming set!!
Heard this story in the past, and it won't stop amusing me.

I remember learning this as a teenager from the show Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction. I did research of it later and it was always interesting. Considering how well Arsenic can preserve a body and even make it look juicy still is interesting to see. And he isn't the only cowboy body to be preserved and put on display.
He is the only one I remember with such a storied history. Most are still on display in the west. And his re-discovery I think makes him interesting. And turns out he was more of a success in death than he ever was in life. Odd how that seems to happen with failed bandits.

It is a very amusing story. He just managed to enter from the grave into Hollywood.

It may be a probability that Elmer’s family didn’t claim his body because after he became an outlaw, they probably disowned him.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 Год назад

The litigious nature of the American Population has not been a "recent development"... His family likely "disowned" him because they wanted distance and deniability between themselves and his criminal antics... and all the consequences.
A Sheriff or Marshall may not be legitimately able to arrest you for your relative's crimes... BUT that won't stop the bank suing you for the costs of repairs to safes... or the families of the slain for hitting you up on wrongful deaths because YOUR bastard-child caused the damage...
...and there's a fair faction who LIKE seeing the family held to account for raising and unleashing their demon-spawn on the rest of us. ;o)

That was a fun story! Well.... "fun" may not be the right word, but it was interesting and entertaining to learn about. Definitely probably wouldn't be entertaining to experience personally though - not just for Elmer but for anyone who handled the corpse without knowing about it! Especially the people who put him in movies! What the heck could 'She-Freak' be about.... I kinda wanna hunt it down and give it a watch now, tbh. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for Elmer ;)

Goodness! What a morbid history of a man who was shot and his body was used as a sideshow prop. Man! That's awful. I mean the crimes he did were awful but this? People are so morbid even if they tried to be sweet and kind, history is pretty nasty with such things like this.

In my belief, death is the end of experience. A corpse is a thing. It doesn't care.
But I am still appalled at the bad taste, if only for the sake of those living who think differently from me and would like peace of mind about what may happen to them in the after.
