Fairy tales have a thing for mirrors, and Disney definitely picked up on that and took it to the next level: Snow White! Cinderella! Beauty and the Beast! Tangled! The Little Mermaid! Frozen! Pocohantas! Mulan! Sleeping Beauty! Aladdin! The Princess and the Frog! Alice in Wonderland! Etc! But today, I want to focus on one mirror in particular...
Is the Mirror from “The Little Mermaid,” in which Scuttle sees Ursula’s true reflection as she sings while getting ready for her wedding to Prince Eric, MORE THAN A NORMAL MIRROR? Does this mirror in particular show the truth behind illusions, given how it shows Ursula’s true sea witch form, when she is disguised as Vanessa? Or is it ANY mirror that can show the truth behind Ursula’s spells in the world of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid?”

I think Ursula's disguise is an illusion but Ariel's legs are real legs created by magic.
Hmmm good idea
Yes correct
That's a good idea, but we can also assume that Ursula's legs were also caused by the same magic. She only lost her form after the shell, which held all her power, was destroyed.
I have another theory, Ariel was looking herself in the mirror from waist up so she couldn't see her tail even if the mirror would show it. So it's still possible that all mirrors are magical there
But...what if the human form was Ariel's true form all along. She was just born in the wrong body? Would a magic mirror reflect what's in your heart?
I mean, singing about your diabolical plot is part of the fun, is it not?
It's just classic villainy.
@@Silver_Sonic_23 Ursula isn’t a villain she’s just a very talented businesswoman.
@@elation.e finally someone said it 😭😭😭
@@elation.e I'd have to agree there.
I have a feeling the writers just couldn't think of a way for someone to find out the truth about her..
It could be the silver back! Many fairytales hint that silver is used to help ward against evil. So the silver could have negated the evil magic bound to the shards meaning it kept the property of showing what people can’t see but instead of twisting it, it shows the truth due to the fairytale properties of silver.
That is a good idea, I just wonder, wouldn't it just cancel out the magic entirely? Or is the silver purifying it?
I came here to say this! It also explains the total lack of reflection relative to vampires.
Okay, but can we talk about her voice? I just- it's so relaxing
I knowwwwwwww 😫😫😫🥴🥴🥴😌
there's actually an "asmr" channel of her she reads books- PRETTY COOL- you can find it on the channels section
I imagine even if mirrors could reveal Ariel's tail, it wouldn't make much of a difference if she's wearing a dress that's covering her legs/tail.
Then again, it doesn't look like Ursula is wearing the white dress in her reflection.
I believe it like the 2000 movie The Scarecrow. The scarecrow calling himself feather top uses a magic feather to disguise himself to look human. The only problem is that it doesn’t work on reflective surfaces, aka mirrors and windows. In short, magic can only cover what you look like, not your inner self, aka your soul.
I would sit all day watching abit frank awesome stories and conspiracies and won't be bored
Her storytelling is just so mysterious and soothing at same time and that what make it so enjoyable
And her little illustrations of the characters just add to the charm.
Agree
I feel like people don't hear this enough so I'm gonna say it
I love you, guys
That caught me so off guard

This is so sweet lol-
I don't know if this is a diss or if it's just nice..
Well most tales that have someone using glamour magic, mirrors show the truth. Mirrors have a reputation of showing the truth throughout literature and lore
It's possible that ariel never say her tail I'm a mirror because she walks wore floor length dresses and assuming the mirrors couldn't see through clothing.
It's interesting, because from what I gathered from The Snow Queen, the mirror wasn't necessarily a liar, rather a negativity enhancer. If that's the case, then it makes sense that Ariel was not revealed to be a mermaid - her heart is pure. Whereas Ursula's was not, given that she was using a glamour to seduce Prince Eric. Although it is entirely possible that Ursula had at some point been hit by one of the shards from the mirror prior, which would result in the mirror reflecting her true image. But the thing is, also, it's not made clear as to whether Ursula can actually *see* her true reflection. Only the seagull actually sees it for definite, which means that it's also possible that if a bystander looks at the reflection of someone who has negative intentions, that they may see what they really look like.
*Edit: I also realised - Ariel's transformation was meant to be a permanent transfiguration into having legs, whereas Ursula's appearance was merely a temporary disguise, which may also be why she was foiled, whilst Ariel's reflection didn't change. It was a different kind of magic used on them both respectively.
Oooh that is really intriguing!
It could also be that Ursula was using an illusion, and mirrors have a habit in folklore of showing through mere illusions.
Ursula is using what is called a glamor in magic, which is just an enchantment. Disney most likely used it as dramatic irony that's used in storytelling
Okay, let's run with the idea put forward, here--that the mirror in the Little Mermaid is forged from a shard of the Imp Mirror from the Snow Queen/Frozen. Now, we have to ask, why doesn't it work, showing truth instead of opposites? Well, maybe it does! However, it is confounded by the Sea Witch's own magic--so, it shows the opposite of the illusion, rather than the opposite of the truth. Ariel does not encounter the same mirror, so there's no plot hole. All the other mirrors just show her as she appears due to the illusion.
I think it's would not show her mermaidtail, because her legs where real. ursula used only some kind of illusion
"Why would you sing out your true motive and diabolical plot for anyone to hear?!"
This Day Aria (a song from MLP: FiM): 👀💧
Her voice is so soft and is so calming to listen to! Like hearing her describe and open another part of books and movies i love is amazing and inspires me to read books in a new and different way💜
I mean mirrors were made with silver and as a „pure“ metal it should not show magic, that is why vampires don’t have reflections.
Nightmare central all aboard!!!
One thing could be is that the mirror was backed with silver, as they often were back in this timeframe. Silver was and still is viewed as a “holy metal” which is why werewolves are harmed by it and vampires cannot see their reflection in it. The silver backing may be able to see through Ursula’s mal-intended disguise magic and therefore reflects her true form.
In the Disney movie, Ursula casts an illusion spell on herself - she doesn't actually change her form - while Ariel truly changes from mermaid to human. As Ursula's spell is just a glamour and has not been enchanted in order to fool those looking into it, her real form can be seen in a mirror.
Damn, the mirror shards part is such an interesting lore part, but damn :D Is there anything that you can't find the unsettling background of? 😂
I remember reading "Snedronningen" when I was younger. I wish I still had that version of it in the language! Maybe I'll read it in english now and see if it feels the same as it did.
Brilliant video as always pal😊🥰👍💯💕💞💖
I loved this! Am glad your back❤️❤️
U: *mention imps*
Me: Helluva Boss
Lmao i love that series
This is such a great connection you've made. I do think it had grains in it and became reversed by becoming a mirror again. I also think that's the reason she owns it, and her attachment too it (as we have seen in so many other stories) compelled her to bring it with her on the boat. That coupled with her arrogance that she wouldn't get caught.
Disney theory. The most popular one
Hey does this room look small to you?
I always suspected Ursula's human appearance was only a glamour that fooled the mind. Since it wasn't actually physical, but rather an illusion, it couldn't reflect light, and so wouldn't work in a mirror. Ariel wouldn't look any different in a mirror because her change was physical.
Based on what you said about the mirror Ursula gazes into being made from shards of the impish mirror from the Snow Queen, it would make sense that any mirrors that Ariel was near or looked into wouldn't show her mermaid form in her reflection. Also, you know something else I discovered from doing some research? Over time, I've begun to notice that Ursula's human disguise, Vanessa, basically looks like a copy of Ariel with darker hair. And I even read something that stated that that was Ursula's intention. Because if you look at when Ariel saves Eric from the shipwreck, when she sees he's still breathing and sings to him, she is backlit by the sun, making her hair appear darker. That's why Ursula turned into Vanessa, to fit with Eric's memory of his rescuer. I think that's a part of the reason she didn't just transform into a replica of Ariel, because that would've been too obvious.
The snow queen fairytale is excalty 7 stories long i only did the first story as a audio horror story but if we went back and read all 6 of them would love to go deeper into the storyline of that fairytale like we did with the little mermaid . I always wanted to know how the mirror got to snow white from Ursula
I always thought it was more of an homage to Hansel and Gretel. Where they see the witches true form in a reflection before they fully figure out that she's witch.
I just love your videos! Hearing these creepy things read out in your voice is oddly relaxing. Keep up the great work ☺️
I think the mirror is connected to fragments from different mirrors. like the mirror in brave , frozen , snow white and sleeping beauty
my thoughts are:
1-vampires and the undead have no reflection but have shadows, so in a way like (snow-white evil queen) mirrors show you the truth and tell no lies but it might mislead you like the (snow queen) mirror
2-singing about your diabolical plot means you're full of pride and ego and think that you have won the game and all is finished
Wow, I just think that your videos are so good and so interesting! Keep making amazing videos!
love your videos and your voice is so calming and sweet sounding ☺️
A Thumbelina video would be so cool!
Glad you're back pal! Great vid thx :)
I think anytime Ariel was Infront of a full length mirror she is wearing a ball gown.
I always imagined that Ursula had temporarily magically affected the mirror as I thought I remembered that same mirror earlier in the song show the human Ursula.
It’s the shipwreck isn’t it?
Yep
well, someone commented before they finished the video (nothing wrong with that, I'm not insulting you, just saying, the answer to your question is no, the shipwreck is not mentioned)
@@mirandablair7384 hahaha I know, I commented when the video was up for literally two seconds 😂 I realised very quickly I was wrong lol
The Snow Queen story was adapted into OUAT lol

Actually bringing this up there are alot of magic mirrors in fairytails.
The story I read, which I'm pretty sure is one of the most original versions. Said that the mirror made everything ugly beautiful things became ugly and ugly things became even worse. Also only Bjorn (pretty sure that's the boys name) got a shard in his eye and heart
Well, if the imp mirror's whole deal is to show the opposite... the opposite of the illusory disguise would be her true form. Math checks out to me. Also, Eric never saw her fishy tail. He saw a beautiful woman with shining dark hair (or incredibly back-lit red hair), and a heavenly set of pipes. Only Max, the dog, saw her fishy tail. A human seeing this foundling walk past a mirror and seeing a fish tail in the reflection? String her up, kill her, and all other horrible things. Remember the song from the beginning of the movie--these people sincerely do not trust merfolk. And one sneaking into the castle under the guise of being human would... ooo, not a good look and would not go over well.
I love this concept so much !
I think I saw this in merlin spells that change your look completely when your reflection will show you’re true form but you’re right cause I’ve seen a lot of mirrors with magic so you might be right
If I'm not mistaken I believe you do see in The Little mermaid Ariel looking at a mirror I think it's when she's getting ready for bed and she's combing her hair. And that instance she looks normal so that would support your theory that only this specific mirror that Ursula used has some kind of magical property.
you should start doing podcasts, i like listening to your videos before i go to bed and that way i could also listen to your videos, it would probably get a lot more people to see your videos
Perhaps the practice of using silver to back the mirrors also plays a part in it. After all, the silver was why vampires had no reflection in mirrors (which would be interesting to see a vampire walk by a mirror with the aluminum or whatever non-silver backing is used now.)
Wait, so your reasoning is that one possible explanation for why the mirror would show Ursula's true self, is that it contains a shard of the mirror from the story that Frozen is loosely based on, but doesn't actually appear in the movie? And somehow the magic must have been changed to do the opposite of the original mirror?
This is your evidence that Frozen and The Little Mermaid are connected?
I believe Ersila human self would've been exposed due to being a beauty spell and and illusion to the human eyes and will show in mirrors lie a vampire with no reflection. Ariel legs may be a spell but are not and illusion since she's walking. Otherwise even if that mirror was magic it would've made Ariel look like a horrifying looking siren from horror films. Ps love your vids my son too, very Tim Burton, unique art, and it makes my day every time! 😁
I glee to your videos! They are fun to listen origin tales and lore and some ideas!
I just found this and i wana say your voice is vary calming and mysteries its cool

I always took it as Ursula using illusion magic on herself but a proper transformation potion on Ariel.
The legend about mirrors stems for the silver used in them. It was always considered a holy metal so it would reject illusions and evil (which is why vampires have no reflection). We now use aluminum to back coat mirrors reducing there price significantly... also it caused them to lose their "holy" aspect so I can put my make on without problems 🧛♀
I always thought it was cuz Arielle offered something physical so her transformation was physical. However Ursula is just using a glamour.
The Snow Queen/Frozen was also originally scripted in the 1940s and then shelved, so someone could have easily come across it in the 80s and decided to borrow some elements for Little Mermaid. But I honestly like the whole "Disney movies all happen in one universe/timeline" thing better.
I think the mirror shows the truth not because it's special but because that's just what mirrors do, they show reality without the occult influences in it, hence why vampires are invisible, ursula's illusion would have no effect.
Also Ariel has real legs, not illusion legs, so the mirror wouldn't show something she no longer has.
New video yay!
That was cool that you caught that
This reminds me of Ever after high (last season)
Is it just me or did this video feel waaaaaay shorter like I want more, and plus if you think about it in the little mermaid 2 when Ariel has a daughter Melody we see a part where they bring the kid to Morgana (Ursula's sister) and she had a mirror as well but the whole are where she lived was frozen and ice so could that be when Elsa Freeze's her kingdom?!?!?!!?
Or perhaps, Morgana's hideout is under or near Ahtohallen?
Dang...nice...
OMG it's been so long since you aplodded a video . 👍👍👍👍👍
Mirror Mirror above my sink, I need some coffee so I may think.
It's just a way to show it's really Ursula. It's just a mirror. It's not like Ursula had her special magic mirror imported from the ocean floor
okay this can not get out of my head now !!!!!
A new video!
I don't remember much from frozen and the little mermaid so sorry if I get anything wrong in my theory, also I'm writing this before watching the full thing. What if the boat where Ariel found the prince also had Elsa and Anna's parents on it? Idk
Mirrors were mostly made from silver within the time period.
I lovvvvveeeee these vids
Wow! Very good points!

Actually, the mirror still works the same. It's telling a lie, because only Ursula knows it's the truth, but everyone else would say it's lying
If a piece of this mirror landed in someone's food and ended up in their stomach, what would happen? Would good food taste bad and bad food taste good? Or would they just digest it?
It seems to interact with a combination of EM waves and the human psyche, so if it includes wavelengths outside of the visible spectrum, perhaps it makes hot food feel cold?
@@chocolatebunnies6376 that makes sense. I know it was a dumb question but it crossed my mind lol
@@thesupremeoverlordofice121 Stupid questions are the best
Could you do a video on Rattlesnake Jake from Rango?
I like spooky cool things.
Amorphous means without form. Did you mean that the glass was nonporous, which means no holes?
If its the mirror then the inverse of illusion is reality, meaning it still showed the inverse.
Wait, what?! 😱
Can you please do a video on the movie "9"
For some reason youtube didn't let me know about this video, seeing it so late now
Maybe the mirror was made with actual silver, and Ursula saw herself because silver is a oure metal and thus it reveals demons and such. This is why vampires couldn't see themselves reflected in mirrors!!
So Disney always copy's stories from Anderson or the Grimm brothers
I think the mirror might actually be some opposite to the imp mirror cause it has an angel or cherub on its frame so I think due to it have ping a holy image it only shows the truth
the nine people that disliked are the nine people that got a pair of glasses from out the mirror
Needless to say, but Ursula had a rough wedding day 👻👻👻
