    I love that she said adults should apologise to children. I feel like so many adults don’t act as well as they make their children do

    • @wolfferoni
      @wolfferoni 4 года назад +490

      Agree to this. Also, parents and adults model their behaviour to their kids or other children, even if it's unintentional. A parent can tell kids to apologise, be polite, don't scream etc. but if their kids are seeing their parent be aggressive to other adults, the kids are going to be perceptive to that. Actions speak louder than words.

      Oh my gosh yes. I think some parents get a weird power complex and think apologising to their child is going to undermine that. Sometimes just gotta be the bigger person, cos for sure the 5 year old is not going to be :P

      It was about a couple of months when I turned 19 that I actually realized that I had never heard my mother apologize to me or my father ever, for anything. It's amazing how often that happened with past generations but thankfully I see that today's parents of young children apologize to them, even in public!

      Lol. That's what happened in Red Shoes. Watch that. It's much better and puts a lot more character into Snow White. Instead of being a rug before a fireplace, waiting for someone to sweep her, Red Shoes does it herself.
      She is plump and she knows that no one would help her if she stayed that way. So she wears a pair of magical shoes that make her beautiful but in the end she realizes that it's not really her (this happens somewhere in the middle of the movie) and she takes off her shoes. The dwarves save her, not because of her physical beauty but for her inner beauty. The moral of the movie is a good one that teaches the younger generation that they don't have to be beautiful on the outside to be loved and plump or ugly people are not the villians.
      That's very much unlike the moral Disney movies gives children.

    The thing I think a lot of people miss about Ariel in the Little Mermaid is that the driving factor to become human is NOT the prince. Ariel loves the human world before she ever sees him, and he provides a good place to run away to when her father gets angry and emotionally manipulative and destroys her stuff. She isn't desperate enough to do anything drastic until that happens.

    • @christinemorgan2483

      I know, it was the very first movie of it's kind, an absolute masterpiece that paved the way for all the animated movies made afterwards. They pretty much invented animation for this movie (before which it was b&w silly symphony type animation). Technically speaking it was absolutely flawless and has aged incredibly well. As for the story, take it as you will, but there are also many strong moments there too, especially for the time that it was made in.

Girl was 16, getting herself into dangerous situations going up to the surface, risking getting caught by fishermen, or whatever a mermaid risks co-mingling with humans (see every mermaid movie ever) and refusing to listen to reason and those who knew better. She was being an irrational teenager so he had to put up some hard boundaries when she wouldn't listen. Even after he flipped out he felt remorseful, and if my memory is right he wanted to apologize. I think he acted the way a responsible father of a 16 year old should act the entire movie, up until he encouraged her to leave her family and entire life and marry some dude she barely knew.

    I've been arguing against the idea that beauty and the beast is an example of Stockholm syndrome for a while now, I'm glad I was validated by these pros! Better examples for SS are Rapunzel and The Hunchback of Notre Dame since the victims are being gaslit by their captors and have been convinced that they are imprisoned for their own safety. The moment Belle chooses to bring the beast back to the castle, she is no longer a prisoner imo, since she returns of her own accord.

    • @SeanNufer
      @SeanNufer 4 года назад +79

      I would say maybe not Stockholm syndrome given the context and the era in which the story was told. But were the story to make the nightly news today, it would be difficult to argue against Stockholm syndrome. Yes, she willfully returns to the castle, but not before risking her safety and her life to try to leave (entering a fierce storm, being chased by wolves). I think she returns because of the Ben Franklin effect and because she is a kind person who realizes that if the beast dies then the entire castle is doomed to an otherwise amenable fate. We can argue that it is or isn't Stockholm Syndrome, but I would argue that even in the best scenario, the principles of the syndrome did in fact play a part in the outcome to some degree. I reallllllly want a Disney movie where the lead, male or female, already has a healthy, communicative relationship with good foundations, and they have an adventure together or there's a conflict and it's sweet because they protect and support each other, and there's no relationship drama. Ugh, give me this!!! Obviously the Incredibles is one, but since they're under so much stress, and as Parents, there is some drama, but it resolves. Loved that movie!
    101 Dalmations' Pongo and Perdy is a good example, and so are Dory's parents, Mulan's parents, Aristocats' Thomas O'Malley and Duchess turns into a good one, so does Lady and the Tramp, Emperor's New Grooves' Pacha and Chicha, Merida's parents, Meet the Robinsons, and others I'm sure. Most are not the centers of their stories though, and while they're excellent examples of healthy relationships I wanted more MC to show how you don't have to fall in love with the first guy you meet, and it doesn't have to be huge and dramatic; it can be quiet and soft and sweet, with good communication and healthy boundaries. Trust, taking strength in your partner, etc.
    That being said, while Princess and the Frog and Tangled (and probably others) are good starts to a relationship, I just wanted a movie that isn't a meet-cute, and is instead an established relationship.

Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, et al. are able to set boundaries, make compromises, and truly develop with their partners BEFORE their nuptials. I will give that Ariel is the first Disney princess to actively seek out love. She is the first princess to demonstrate selfishness ("I want moooore...") and to proactively seek out her love story.

      I do mostly agree on how the period of strong Disney female characters started with Belle in Beauty in the Beast, but the Disney renaissance isn't classified as the age's main characteristic. The Disney "renaissance" or "re-birth" is referring to the return of the classic Disney style of Animation, songs, and fairytales, which was started by The Little Mermaid. With the help of an extraordinary team (and a brilliant impromptu lecture by the late and great Howard Ashman), the animation department succeeded. Following the success of The Little Mermaid, came Beauty and the Beast, and so on.

What finally pushed her over the edge into leaving was to escape her controlling father. Arial actively persues Eric and the two actually date before ursala interferes. No, not exactly. She does give up her voice for legs to get a man. She loved human world at first, true (hence the song "Part of your world"), but when she came to Ursula her main motivation was Eric, you can clearly see it in "Poor unfortunate soul", even Ursula says so.

    • @cookiedave44

      7snowdog Ursula song is manipulative. Just because she said those were the motivations, doesn’t mean they really were. Ariel is young, and young people are vulnerable to making decisions based on the present and not the future. Ursula took advantage, and also rushed her into it. I don’t think Ariel had a chance think it through, and therefore motivations might even be irrelevant in that situation. Just my thoughts! :)

      Mom Ariel repeated the mistakes of her father by not being transparent about what was driving parental worries. That caused a lot of friction between Triton and Ariel, Ariel and Melody. Although this next point was never mentioned in the movie, in my head cannon, Ariel's mother was killed by humans and that's why Triton is so against the human world. Because he had a kingdom to run and 7 daughters to care for, he probably grieved alone and didn't tell his daughters why he is the way he is. But Ariel sees him as overbearing when he is just trying to protect her. Melody says the same thing about Ariel. If they would just be transparent with each other upfront, their relationships would be much stronger.

    Ok but with Ariel, she wanted to be on land way before she saved Eric. I think if Triton had still blown up her human things without her meeting Eric first she still would’ve wanted legs to leave the sea. I don’t think we should diminish her character by thinking that’s the only reason she wanted legs. She loved/loves singing but she wants to explore the human world more. Eric was just kinda something that represented her love for human things and the human world. She saw him as beautiful the same way she thought the human world was beautiful. She didn’t really give up her voice to be human for Eric. I think she gave it up to be human for herself. I think eventually this all would’ve happened with or without Eric. (Sorry this was long. My takeaway has always been that Ariel’s passion for the human world came before romance with Eric even entered the picture. Her song repeats the lyrics “Part of THAT world” over and over again, but after she rescues Eric, she changes her words to “Part of YOUR world” showing that her dream has now taken a new direction.

Through the movie there is several comments about her voice, and I feel this was intentional, she is praised by her voice. I feel like not having her voice makes her vulnerable, people will be like: "well this is not who is is" but, is that true? No! Ariel is more then just a voice and pretty face. I think the intention behind this act was to prove that you are more then what people make of you, or you even make of yourself at times. Ariel got the prince because of her personality.

      Liz McCloskey yeah I was curious what she was going to say. I feel like nothing positive really comes out of polygamy 😂

      Polyamory, not polygamy.

      Polygamy is a subset of polyamory. Polyandry is the woman with men, Polygamy is the man with women. Polyamory covers them all: a person having more than one partner.

      @@eggsnspam Isn't polyamory a situation where everyone's with everyone (A+B, A+C, B+C), whereas in a polyandry/polygamy there's one person having a relationship with several others of the opposite gender who consent to/are aware of this but don't have any bonds between one another (A+B, A+C, A+D, but never B+C, C+D, B+D)? Or do I understand it wrong?

      @@kangaroo9816 Polyamory is a catchall term that includes all the cases you mentioned. Some polyamorous relationships have one person who dates multiple others, some have everyone in the relationship dating multiple people. For example, A+B and A+C could be described as polygamy, but it is also an example of polyamory. Another example of polyamory would be A+B, B+C, C+D where B and D aren't in a relationship, but both B and C are dating multiple people, and their partners are okay with that.
      It's like squares and rectangles; all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. Polygamy is a specific kind of polyamory, but there are other kinds of polyamory too.

    Ariel does not love Erik. She loves the concept of Erik. She loves human trinkets and treasures that she finds in the sea and she wants to learn more; hence why she falls for the the first human male of breeding age she sees. Erik was at least looking for the woman who saved him who he specifically remembers her voice which is why he's bummed when it turns out Areal is a mute, he figures it can't be the right girl. Worst of all Areal doesn't change. She doesn't learn anything. Areal wants something, there are obstacles, she gets what she wants the end. She endangered her father, her family and by extent her entire kingdom just so she could pursue a guy she's never even really met

    I love Disney. Big Hero 6 and Meet The Robinsons are 2 of my all time favorites. Though my son loves all of the Toy Stories.
    I really enjoyed hearing your breakdowns of the "lessons" about behaviors in these Disney films. Also, I really agree with the statement that adults need to apologize to kids. It has been my practice in my classroom, and much more so now that I'm a mom.

    Is that the enchanted rose on Zach's background? He must really like the movie.
    By the way, a lot of requests for a second part, but mostly princess' movies (not that disagree, i'd love an "Enchanted" review).
    However, what about Lady and the tramp? 101 dalmatians? The aristocats? Robin hood? The rescuers? The lion king? I know that I'm sounding a bit furry with my choices, but most animal couples in disney have way more complex relationships than the princesses.
