According to movies like “A Christmas Horror Story” Krampus is like an “Anti-Claus. A demon that punishes the naughty. He whips them, and chains them up, and puts them in his sack. Stuff like that.” “On Krampusnachut, the demon hunts the wicked from sunset to sunrise.… Which is kinda true and also kinda... not? So. where does Krampus come from, what is their origin story, and most impressively, how have they survived being not only BANNED by governments, but erased by religion?! (It’s amazing that they’ve actually survived, and I gotta respect that! So, in this video, we’re gonna talk about Krampus origins and other Alpine lore, Santa Claus' origins, the Krampus/Santa dynamic relationship, and finally how Krampus not only survived… but thrives. Merry Creepmas and Season's Creepings friends and fiends!

At the clinic where I worked we decided to have a door decorating theme that the art therapy groups ran. I requested a Festivus pole and Krampus since we had people with religious trauma, so I wanted to be the "festive, but sarcastic door." I no longer work there but I kept the handmade Festivus pole and Krampus demon. I was so proud of my clients. The kid in the Krampus sack is smiling. I asked the client, "why is he happy?"
"I was working on it at 3am!" (materials were supposed to stay in our building and we didn't want our clients stressing)
"Aren't you supposed to work on sleep hygiene as a treatment goal?"
"But I wanted it to look nice!"
"The kiddo is happy about going to Hell?"
"Some people don't like seeing their families on Christmas."
    "That's fair."

I actually got to witness a Namahage drag a child out into the snow, (because I was too foreign for it to come into my home), and it was amazing to see the response of the family.

The Krampus aren't even the only Christmas entities that survived Christianity, they are only the most famous ones, due to their iconic look and said shows and movies.
In Italy there is the Befana, an old lady who represents the old year sweaping away its remains, which is why she's an old lady riding a broomstick. In the rest of Germany, St. Nick is accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht (Serf Ruprecht), who is basically Krampus but grumpier and human. In Iceland there are the 13 Yule Lads and their terrifying mother Gryla.
All these survived because Christmas never was a quite religious Holiday. It was the famous nerd Martin Luther who was appalled at all this paganism, accepted or incorporated by the Catholic Church, on the birth of our Lord and Saviour JC! He was the one who introduced the idea of gifts being brought by Baby Jesus himself on the date of his birth, as opposed to other Saints and Entities who appeared closely before or after the day.

In Finland, Santa Claus is called Joulupukki (formerly also Nuuttipukki and Kekripukki), it comes from the Swedish loan Julebukker. The Yule goat is an ancient pagan symbol of fertility and is closely assosiated with Odin, aka Jólnir. Originally, the Julebukkers were a group of young men in Sweden and Finland who wore sheepskin, goat horns and a bark mask. Julebukker toured the house to house for asking if they had food and beer to offer. But if the house had nothing to offer the guest, then Julebukker made little pranks to them. Later, influenced by the tradition of St. Nicholas, Julebukker began giving gifts to children in the 19th century. And then the Coca-Cola and Disney comics caused that the Finnish Santa Claus was wearing red clothes instead of sheepskin, goat horns and a bark mask.

In Czech Republic we celebrate St. Nicholas on Dec 6th and parents often pay teenagers to dress up like St. Nick, a devil and an angel (supposed to keep the devil in check) to come to their house and deliver sweets to their kids. Usually the devil has a bag with a foot sticking out of a hole to make it look like he already took a kid or two. St. Nick reads from his book something like "Hmm, hmm, I see you were mostly good, but did some naughty things as well", devil goes like "Yes, naughty, naughty", angel says that the child can undu their deeds by reciting a poem. The child recites a poem, dodging being dragged to hell and gets sweets.
.... It can be a bit traumatizing, not gonna lie 😅

Tho he isn't accompanied by crampus there still is an old tradition saying that bad children would be beaten using a bundle of sticks while especially bad children would be taken with him in a bag back to his castle in spain. upon which they would be trained to help him pack gifts and assist the holy man preparing for the next year.

It does work with saint Nicholas and Mrs. Bertha (she is known for caring for children and cutting up bodies, he is known for caring for children and healing cut up bodies) but this theory of Christmas being just a rehash of that one roman Holiday is just silly to me. Like, there are no known traditions of the Dies Natalis Solis Invicti that translated into Christian ones (except for the italian name "Natale" but that could be just as well a reference to the Day of Birth of Jesus), Christmas wasn't that important to Christianity until ca the 1500s, and the early Church didn't even have any factual power over what people celebrated!

There is a special "Christmas" tradition in Japan where Mountain demons descend on the village and kidnap the kids from their home. I do mean literally, the door is kept closed but not locked so they burst in shouting and stooping. Find the kid and grab them trying to take him to the mountains. It's the parent's job here to hold on to the kid, talk them up to the demon saying they do their homework and chores, never bad mouth...etc and if the demons are satisfied they let the kid go and the parents invite them to a prepared meal + sake. Happy and in a better mood they leave with a threat to the kid that they know where they live now so next year if they're bad, lazy or rude to their parents... well, they know.
Traumatic to the kid but it makes them feel protected since placating the demons is the parent's job.

  • @futuristicspider
    @futuristicspider 2 года назад +1

interesting that you say 6th of dec is a smaller feast leading up to Christmas bc in my childhood that certainly wasn't the case! St Nick was way more important and we (my classmates and I aka the people my age I actually knew) believed in st Nick but never in Santa ;v; On tv we'd have a lot of shows about st Nick and his companion but Santa was only ever present in commercials or American shows. Some of my friends would be very afraid of the sack! Maybe it's extremely regional idk. But there were weeks and weeks of anticipation. Putting your shoe out every night and getting some candy and fruit and then on the eve of the 5th you'd set the table and place gifts for st. Nick (something you made yourself for st nick, a beer for our 'krampus', a carrot and sugar cube for st. nick's horse) and in the morning the table would be loaded with presents and the plates filled with deliciousness ☺️ then of course you'd have to shout your thanks really loud so st nick and 'krampus' could hear you wherever they were. It was honestly very magical and I miss it XD PROBLEMATICALLY our krampus had morphed into a racist caricature sometime in history 😬 big yikes.
I remember as a kid coming along for Christmas shopping and also choosing small gifts for family members. (that I didn't have to pay for myself but sh) Christmas is more about a big dinner and family. Everyone would gather at a grandparent's place and the gifts everyone brought would be collected under the tree. Usually the youngest person who could read would be handing the presents out during/after desert when everyone gathers around the tree, proud that they could read the names on the wrapper. The person who got it for you would tell you after you'd opened it and then you'd have to go give them three kisses on the cheek. And then after that it was time to read letters out loud to wish your grandparents a very merry Christmas. I even remember being surprised that anyone even believed Santa was real ever! XD It seemed so foreign to me
uh long comment sorry got lost in nostalgia there

Super interesting video otherwise, always love the creepy illustrations you have throughout.

I think Frankie did this to denote how the figure shifts from the female Mrs. Bertha to the male Demon, so she uses neutral pronouns. Though I do think it would be better to refer to the Krampuss as plural, since they also, like the Perchten, always come in packs.
If we wanna really be nitpicky about the grammar, in German the noun Krampus is male, while Perchte is female.

I think Frankie used neutral pronouns since the gender shifted from the female Perchte to the male Demon.
BUT you are right, there are indeed more than one Krampus. They are more a "type" of spirit that follow st. Nicholas and Mrs. Bertha in packs. You see, in many parts of the Alps, the presents are directly given by someone dressed as the saint, who is accompanied by many Krampusse. I always assumed that the Krampusse were just the male Perchten, since in German the noun Krampus is male, while Perchte is female.

Krampus is also a remain of throwing out the Winter (due to long cold Winters) by making Noise. But These Perchten are not Krampus. Maybe Parents were much stricter in thise Alps Regions back then. The Holy turkish Priest Nikolaus goes back to a Bible Story. It was about Hunger and a greedy King who wanted the Half of the Food of People. During a Time where there was not much Food and Water left. A Kid gave a Dog his last Bread and the Priest saw it. They go to the Ship and Nikolaus said to the the Captain that he should give the half of it back and that there will be enough for the King. First he doesn't believe him but then he does. His Mum or somebody is dying or died meanwhile. Next Day: The Ship starts to sail away..they see that it's heavier than before. They are happy, sailing away, thinking the Priest. As the Boy wakes up next Morning he finds:an Apple, an Orange, some Peanuts or Datteln in his Boots. He his happy and the Story goes like..all ppl can be fed, nobody has to be hungry. Since that Day Kids get these Things (nowadays Choclate) as a rememberance of the good Nikolaus. That's the Origin Story. Before that he had a Servant Knecht Ruprecht for a While. Still wondering about how the Krampus came to Existance in that Bible Story.

Nice to hear people talk about the Krampus and about their connection to Mrs. Bertha. But the story of Christians turning the holiday of Sol Invictus into Christmas (WITH THE HELP OF CONSTANTINE!!!) is such an antiquated and unlikely theory. I highly suggest Religion for Breakfast's recent video on Sol Invictus, which takes an extensive look at the history of this god, of the Christmas date and this theory as a whole.
    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Well, the Krampus are a type of supernatural creature that is neither entirely good nor bad, and their scary appearance is bound to the role they play: not only are they supposed to „scare them straight“ into good behaviour, they also have apotropaic functions, which many nowadays forget. They‘re the ugly gods that hunt for dangers, and thus protect the saint, similar to the Jack-o-lanterns on Halloween, the gargoyles on churches and the gorgon heads on the greek temples. They are terrifying to scare away what is truely evil.
