Just a note on another dangerous factor in bird toys: some come with a carabener clip on top (the metal clip you push in to open and attach the toy to the cage) I had a bird figure out how to open the clip and it got stuck on the opening under his beak. It didn't break the skin so, other than terrifying himself, he was totally okay. Until it happened AGAIN this time he was able to both unscrew and open the clip and this time it went deep. After a couple stitches he was fine but he wouldn't touch any toy for years after that and it took me a long time of training to desensitize him to toys. Now he is great but I always remember never to keep those toys on clips. I just wanted to say something for other bird owners. I've never seen or heard of it happening to other birds but they're very smart creatures and now that I know it's possible for them to open those clips and literally hang themselves, I have to get the word out to other bird owners. Jamie I hope you see this it's just an FYI for everyone!! Thank you so much for everything you do!! Because of you my bird went from having lost more than 50% of his feathers from plucking to being almost completely covered and ready to fly within less than six months of my care💚 thank you thank you thank you!! Oh and my electus Hank says thank you too!!

I have a parrotlet and her favorite toy was a frayed cotton rope ring. She loved nestling into it and preening the tiny strings. One day my dad and sister yell to me that she was stuck so I ran into the room to find that her neck was wrapped up in the rope and she was screeching, trying to get out. I barely managed to cut her out in time and I made sure the toy went straight into the trash after that (after making sure she was ok). If they weren’t in the room when that happened she would have suffocated to death which is honestly the scariest thing to think about.

Heavy metal toxicity can be caused by metal toys. Leaf and zinc are generally the metals that cause toxicity. Be sure that all the metal chains or skewers that are holding up your toys are either stainless steel or nickel plated. Chrome plated is also sometimes safe. Anything galvanized is unsafe. Aluminum is safe.

And I know my uncle had a galah and he had treated pine timber as one of the toys, the bird chewed/shredded the wood daily, so I bought some of the toys I got for my pigeon ( some were to big/ my pigeon Scooter doesn’t play with many toys) and we ended up taking the galah to my bird vet and the bird was poisoned by the treated pine! Although she has beem watching Pikachu play with his toys and she seems to be interested then i saw her moving the wood block toy around with her beak oh so gentle so there is hope! What about mirrors / mirror toys? They are nothing but a mental torture device.
Had a really hard time finding parrot safe toys myself. The stuff they sell in pet stores can be dangerous if not fatal to birds. They sell it in the bird isle, it is colorful, people think their birds need it. Seeing mirrors and happy huts in peoples parrot cages drives me up a wall. I found out about planetpleasures parrot toy website. Seems like your bird boxes have some interesting looking items in them that I don't see in their web store at all.
Those pins are awesome. I will have to order the small box for my budgies / cockatiel on my next paycheck :D

Make some puzzles for your birds to work on. I assume parrots have similar or greater intelligence as cockatoos. Such that wooden dowels can be used as obstacles they can interact with, allowing the parrot to disassemble some sort of locking mechanism (one example is the dowels block a door that the bird has to pull each one before opening the door and accessing the food)

Oh, wish I saw this before I ordered new leather thong from Amazon. Rascal is the first bird we have had that chews (I attribute this to the BirdTricks Diet and our attempt at target training diet, much less messy by the way). We got rid of rope fuzzys, fabric toys, due to probably the same video. Now my little pin thief does help me sewing, I am very careful they are not allowed to chew on fabric or pattern paper. Here is a cockatiel game, he takes my pin cushion and takes out all the pins and throws them around. Also, here is a hint, we wash our dyed toys, veggie dye will rinse off. We do use plastic pony beads, he loves to chew apart the leather thong, and throw the beads at us! Hey, here is a good question, is it safe to use rustoleum on my outdoor cage? It is getting a little rusty and I know I don't want my cockatiel chewing on it. Much love Maren, Gabriel, and Rascal

I make my own toys as my birds hate anything I buy. I have conures, a Quaker and a Moustache Parakeet, so paper, cardboard and wood toys. I bought some hardwood someone had cut down from their lot, so no pesticides, and it’s in my hot car drying. I will bandsaw them into toys, and I use balsa houses from the dollar store as a bed for the bigger birds and they live it. My Quaker has rounded some edges, but that’s ok with me as it’s only a buck to replace. I use plastic beads to cover the wire on some swings. My birds ignore them. I use pony beads to stop toys from falling off the zip tie or string. I also drilled holes in poker chips. They like using them as tools or just tossing. I use bamboo when I can find it and may grow some in a container as it’s a very invasive plant. I have cardboard and paper that I make toys with and as I am quite good at origami, I make paper boxes and water bombs that I stuff with shredded paper and paper wrapped treats. I use paper cups(unwaxed) and other stuff, usually in the baking aisle. I use stainless steel measuring spoons as noise makers. I used stainless mis en place bowls to make my bells and used 2 stainless spoons as the clappers. I only use jute and paper ropes or zip ties to hold my toys together. My birds ignore the zip ties and the beads too but love to find the paper rope at the bottom of a toy so they can chew off the knot so everything falls to the bottom of the cage You can almost gear them laughing. I have baskets on the side of their cages so that what fell off can stay off the bottom. It’s also where I put their piece of cob corn. They love their baskets. They spend most of the day out of their cages but are in there if I have to go out.

Info on safe ways to attach toys to the cage will be helpful. There are universal no-nos like spring-loaded metal links but almost anything can be dangerous for a particular bird. Mine got her beak stuck on a plastic C link and panicked, luckily with no permanent consequences. And I thought I was smart to cover the opening with a plastic straw piece that fitted snugly.

I agree with everything but the bells- this night just be my budgie but he loves them! He sticks his face into them and just sings. He doesn't try to chew on them or anything he just sings into them and bangs them against the cage. Again though that may just be my budgie.

I bought my green cheek conure a chain toy and the hoops were big enough for him to get his head stuck in one, if I hadn't been home, he would have died, I blame myself for buying the toy, the hoops had sneakers on but he chewed them off. Never again am I buying toys like this.

There is actually this one kind of bell where the outside is long and thin, the clapper is far enough up that the bird can’t grab it. If there were any bells I were to recommend, I’d be those (I don’t know what they’re called). I heard people talking about them and how they’re just generally better for bird toys (obviously only use them if they don’t get hormonal from them)

I wish we could get those in NZ! My 6 year old male budgie gets hormonal with all of his toys! What to do!? I try to rotate them so he doesn’t fixate on any of them, but it still happens, especially in spring! Presently his leg is sore and I can’t figure out what is doing it, so listening to you about ropes, I’m about to review everything in his cage / palace! 😉 Thanks for this timely video! 😊

Thanks for sharing these helpful informations!
Unfortunately other rope material than cotton is problematic too.
F.e. coconut shells or (we call it in Germany) sisal.
My grey injested particles while chewing on it, and threw up slime again and again after that.
So I went back to use thin short cotton ropes to fix wood with it, and change it frequently. I use bigger ropes for clinbing in my living room that the can only use when I am with them.
Best to destroy is wood from fresh cut apple-, cherry- or haselnut-trees.
And yes, they love to destroy cardboard.
But I am hesitant to give it to them because of the glue...

I'd like to add metal containing zinc, as many bird toy chains have.
    It's toxic for parrots.
But I give mine small cups and spoons etc (without sharp edges) made of stainless steel.

Not just generally but learn the behaviours of your bird with toys. My cockatiel had natural big wooden loops not too dissimilar to the one in the video but smaller- it wasn't something he could get his head stuck in because it was wide enough for him to have space around his head. despite this, one time he slipped while playing with it and got it around his head and in a panic flew forward and it was caught on his neck. luckily i was there but it was hard to get him and move him away from it because he was so distressed and flapping which could've lead to any amount of injury so personally because of his habit of diving in head first i avoid toys that can be climbed into (head-wise)

You covered a lot of important tips. Here are a couple more: Toys made with wooden popsicle sticks should be avoided. When parrots chew them, the popsicle sticks can turn into long, sharp, needle-like pieces of wood that can cause injury. Not all stainless steel bowls are safe. Some contain toxic metals, therefore purchase high quality (usually a lot more expensive) stainless steel dishes for your birds and other pets. I discard the "stainless steel" dishes that come with the cage and purchase the dishes elsewhere to ensure safe stainless steel quality.

Hi, I have a Timneh African Grey. I have had him for approx 16 years. He has never been interested in:
    - natural toys
    - fruit/veg/pulses/salads
    - puzzle solving toys
I have managed to get him off a seed diet and moved him to Harrisons lifetime coarse. He will now eat a small amount of warm peas, carrots and sweetcorn. But nothing else. I have tried and tried to persevere but hit a blocker. I also add supplements to his diet as he won't eat fruit/veg.
I have tried numerous different natural toys, plastic toys, puzzle solving toys. I spent so much money and he didn't like any of it. The only things he loves is cardboard, egg boxes and more recently EVA foam which he loves to shred. These toys seem to have really stopped him from plucking. I have never witnessed him ingesting any of it. He had an xray 3 months ago. He has been twiddling/shredding egg boxes and cardboard for 5 years and the last few months the foam. The EVA foam sheets say non toxic and suitable for children. I have chewed them myself and they don't seem to have a taste.
Am I being naive in that they are not causing my bird harm. I just want to do the right thing, but these un-natural toys seem to be the only thing he loves and stops him from plucking.
