      you can get perfectly good used cages from craigslist or facebook marketplace for about $100, even up to macaw size. pellets are $4 per lb in the US from the bins where they are the freshest and veggies are very cheap here too. dogs are much more expensive because they require real high quality meats at up to $7 per lb for ground sirloin. you can make toys your self for pennies. birds are not expensive if you check out the deals.

    I think you forgot to mention one really dangerous and ubiquitous item: Cables.
    Dangerous on the inside (copper), dangerous on the outside (rubber) and even more dangerous when plugged in (electricity).
    Maybe it's just a kink of my bird but I have to be really careful when he is near any cable or he will start chewing on it.

    Your channel along with others like it has taught me so much about birds. I had never had a pet bird until a little over a year ago when I met my current boyfriend. He had a cockatiel for almost a year before we met and was not aware of how to take care of him properly. We got him a little budgie friend a couple months later. They were on all seed diets, kept in their cages most of the time and the cage was cluttered and had mirrors. They were kept around candles and cologne often. Because of you I've been working to change their diet. It has not been easy, but has gotten better. (Their weakness is fresh parsley 😊) We moved and they have a whole room to themselves now with lots of toys and perches. Their quality of life is continuously growing. It's unfortunate that the general public doesn't know how hard it is to properly care for birds. If it weren't for RUclips they probably wouldn't have made it. Thank you for all that you do!

    My Rainbow Lorikeet had metal toxicity from playing with jewelry, while he was being looked after by someone else for a while. He would continuously vomit and not be able to hold down any food. When I spoke to the vet he suggested to have Simon put down because he was unlikely to survive and if he did survive he would probably have neurological problems. I said that it didn't matter how disabled Simon was, I wanted him alive as long as he wasn't in pain. Simon made it and he is a very happy healthy boy again at home with me. Remember jewelry can be toxic too.

    My landlord varnished the hardwood floors on the flat below ours and didn’t warn us. Luckily we hadn’t gotten a bird yet, but that could have been fatal for the bird. I was angry!
    Antifreeze. And those blue bleach cleaners for toilets that people drop into the back of tanks - don’t use them if you have pets of any kind. My friend killed her cat that way. Great video, Jamie!! I wanted to add hair spray and perfume to the list. I'm sure you have them on your download.
    I'm old school, and still wear hair spray and real perfume. Most times the dogs are with me in the morning while I'm getting dressed, and as soon as I pick up the can of hair spray, they line up at the door. That's my cue to get all the furry and feathered friends out before I spray. And I never put perfume on my neck or wrists because that's where Yoshi goes. Gotta get creative to keep these guys safe.
    Thank you for the info, Jamie. It's always great to have a reference to keep handy. 😊

    Story of my sun conure: hatched est. 1998 She is very calm, very vocal too, but we can’t seem to get her to step up, always bites, but as I said making progress, only two other owners (including my grandfather) anyways, thank you very very much for your videos and as always, stay awesome!! :)

    I just found out that I have been using a ceramic coated curling iron that has Teflon in the coating, and I used it in the bathroom next to my bird room 😰
    There are so many products that are coated with Teflon that we aren’t aware of because they’re marketed as “ceramic coated”

    Hello friends, can I ask? okay before I emphasize that this question is without any intention other than my curiosity, the question: "Why do people out there (outside Indonesia and Thailand) keep more parrots?" If in Indonesia there are many who keep babbling birds, what do you think the strongest reason is that there aren't many people out there who care for other than parrots? thank you

    • @jmdenison
      @jmdenison 4 года назад

      not sure what your question is. why do people keep pet birds? because we love them and are addicted to them. but not all parrots make good pets. only a handful of species are kept as pets. for example, Amazon green parrots and African greys, because they are great talkers. Macaws because they are beautiful and majestic and can talk and won't kill you. Indian ring necks because they are cute and fairly good talkers. Budgies (budgeriariers) because they talk pretty good and are cheap and adorable. There are 400 species of parrots, but only about a dozen are kept as pets. A black cockatoo is not a good pet because it is very aggressive, is one good example. Cockatoos are friendly and cuddly and can be great pets so they are kept. It depends on the species. Of the smaller birds, we love lovebirds, budgies, ringnecks, canaries, parotlets, etc. Of the larger species we love African Greys, cockatoos, macaws and Amazon Green Birds (why don't we have a better name for these? really) and then there are caiques and lorikeets and linnies. But there are so many more species.

    I would like to include cooking on the stove when your birds are out. I used to do it all the time because my birds never flew into my kitchen, However one day something spooked them and one of my birds landed on my stove top and thankfully did not land on the hot burner. Ever since then they remain in their cages until I am done cooking. I got lucky. I hope NO ONE ever has that scare like I did.

    Here is a story i witnessed this personally years ago...my mothers friend had a small glass of ice and scotch on an end table. My mothers super friendly parakeet landed on the glass and leaning over it i am guessing inhaled fumes and actually passed out in the glass! This happened so quickly and i am glad there was ice in the glass it stopped him from being submerged!!! Poor thing! I got him out and sat with him and he came to and was okay. Yikes! This is a good list to give thought to. It is easy to overlook some things!

  • @tracyroake2815
    @tracyroake2815 2 года назад

    Thank you so much for your list! I know this is an older video but I hope you see my comment. Or those that read the comments. Oven bags for cooking turkeys and other things huge No-No very dangerous! Also when I am cooking I make sure that my AGC is in her house! If you're boiling a pot of pasta water, and somebody flies over, danger danger! And one more thing I would like to say because there are so many birds that get lost because they flew out the door or flew out the window. Please get screen doors and Screen your windows! A screen door is great you can have the backdoor open and have the screen locked for extra security! But always mindful mindful put that sign out, " bird on floor , Do Not Open Door! "

    Would a cage with dimensions 31x20x51 be good for two cockatiels, (or two lovebirds or budgies.)
    We have been watching these videos, and trying to make all the right choices. We haven’t decided on a breed yet, but would any of these safely fit in that size cage? For more context, I stay at home, and they would be allowed out often. Thanks for the info! 🙏

However after seeing your guys trying to get it spinning themselves, it makes me want to just attach a ceiling fan to the ceiling, with no electrical going to it at all so no way for it to be turned on, just to have a merry-go-round on the ceiling for my birds.

    Jamie I've been meaning to ask, but keep forgetting--why do you leave the tags on some toys you hang on their stands? Like the kabobs etc. have those shiny paper labels stapled on, and I just assumed I should be worried about the staples or when the tags are attached with thin plastic rings. Is it not an issue or are you just confident that they're not interesting compared to the toy? I've been removing them because I'm paranoid lol. Also Comet checking feet is adorable as always :3

    Hello Jamie Leigh, Do your macaws ever bite you? if so then do you need to go to hospital and get stitches done? My African grey's bites used to really hurt so I imagine macaws can do some pretty bad damage if they are annoyed. This does put me off from getting a large parrot. Should I be scared of getting one?

      really, you should talk to your brother. watching birds is tricky and even the best bird owners lose a bird. sorry your brother is more important than a bird. humans are still more important than birds. forgive him and move on. help him to understand pet care better. I'm sure he didn't mean it and intentions are everything. Did he buy you a new bird? that's what I would do. fix what you break but expect the other person to forgive too. life is to short and your bird for sure is in birdie heaven watching over you. if you can forgive and calm your soul, you will be able to catch glimpses of him or her
