I got a flip phone when I became a mom and loved it. I recently went on a road trip and got my smart phone back out for traveling and haven't put it back away. Thanks for making this video.

This was a NEEDED reminder! Thank you! I have a 10 Month old.. and the phone is my best friend during nursing, nap time (like now 😅) I’m literally addicted to RUclips 🙈
i want to change that too, thanks for the tips! That one with the hair tie is good one, just need another case.
Im starting to crochet and knitting. Maybe thats something instead of being on phone for 24/7

You don’t need the case just the hair tie! It doesn’t prevent you from using but is annoying enough to make you question it if you pay attention !

I’m so addicted. Happy to hear other talk about the struggle too!

Yes, I think hobbies are a huge help. So you have something else to do instead of being on your phone. I have been listening to audiobooks (okay still on my phone but I’m not staring at it!) and doing puzzles. It’s so chill and I don’t find myself overstimulated at the end of the day. And you can get audio books through the library!

I’ve deleted my social media apps (and RUclips!) off my phone, but I keep them on my iPad, which I don’t have with me all the time and have to more actively think about if I want to check something. That has helped me a lot!
But yes I totally relate with everything you’re saying. And it was a wake up call to me when my 1 year old daughter randomly started bringing me my phone from the other room saying “here mama!”

  • @cnlepine82
    @cnlepine82 6 месяцев назад +5

Relate to all of this! My 15mo makes this “UUUNNNHHH!” noise at me when I’ve spaced on my phone. Her way of getting me to come back to reality. I also feel you so deeply on the inability to be “bored”. I used to read so much to fill that time. I’d bring paperbacks in my bag when I was on transit, or waiting somewhere, or… you name it. Thanks for making this and again for bringing us such great content!

I just found out I can set timers for different apps, and once I hit that limit my phone locks the app for the rest of the day. So I added that to all of my mindless scrolling apps! It's been a nice way to keep myself in check with my goals of spending less time on my phone.

My daughter (about to turn two) LOVES watching videos/photos of herself on my phone. So every time she sees my phone she points at it and says ‘Bubba!!!’ to let me know she wants to watch videos of herself. This has made me super conscious of how ever-present my phone is, even when I’m not using it, and has been a great motivator to stop using my phone around her. Sometimes I still like to have it close by, but will hide it from us both by putting it underneath something, so it’s out of sight, out of mind.

LOVE this, I didn't think to have my kid turn into my accountability buddy for screen time but it is such a good idea, definitely going to start doing that! I also have been reaching for my Kindle instead of my phone lately - when my toddler is playing independently or engrossed in an activity or wrestling with Dad or whatever it is, I've been trying to read instead of scrolling and it's been so nice!

Oh man, I've been thinking about this for 8 months. Everytime I try and stop I get so full of panick and think"but what will I do when I'm bored?". You made a great point on what it was like in the 90's, because I was bored so much but often had the most fun and most creative time 😜

It is definitely a problem for me too. And like you say too I am always like "what do I do now?" A thing that has helped me before that I am trying again is to tell myself: "I am OK with being bored." (Just telling myself that seems to help)
My two year old has definitely brought me my phone from the other room and yes that is eye opening.
I have at least quit from the overstimulating forms of the internet (quit social media except for RUclips). And thanks to your help I got my toddler off of the overstimulating forms of her screen time (She doesn't watch RUclips anymore, only TV shows).
ps: I am excited for your flip book! I already pre-ordered it :)

I did not use my phone anywhere close to my baby for the ENTIRE first month of her life and it almost killed me. haha! But maybe postpartum was REALLY hard. I'd do it all over again though. More because of emf exposure but also respectful parenting which calls parents to be fully present for meals/diaper changes/sleep. Also, I try to sleep whenever possible because she was a high needs baby and I didn't get enough.
TIPS: I try not to use my phone when my 3 year old is with me and when I do, I tell her "Give me a moment, this is important, I'm writing to grandma to tell her about ABC." or "I'd like to look this recipe up to make for dinner.". So it holds me accountable because I can't say "I'm just mindlessly scrolling." 😆

I have such a hard time with this!! I have a hard time just sitting without something to do, but my 12-month-old is going to just be curious or get into anything I decide to do. I tried reading a physical book and she took my sticky note I was using as a bookmark. 😕 I love the idea of an Apple Watch, but not sure we can afford it anytime soon (though, maybe a used one could work.)

Just so you know..I love to read and eventually, you'll be able to do more of that again. My girl is 3 and from around 9 months till about 2 plus. She will take things from me or I can steal some reading in the playground while I let her explore a bit. This season passes very quickly and inviting her to do whatever I am doing will helps a lot. Even though it may slow everything down..it will be worth while when you look back. You are doing great! :)

My husband and I have a rule to not let the baby see us on our phone. It changes everything. It’s challenging, but it changes everything.
They are truly sponges. If my baby is in a room for 5 minutes and everyone has their phone next to them on couches or tables she will somehow learn who’s phone is who’s immediately just while she’s playing and socializing and as soon as they walk away from their phone she will pick it up and bring it to them. She does this with 100% accuracy even if I couldn’t tell them apart or who they belong to. I don’t even grab my own phone with 100% accuracy at a family gathering! So yeah, they see it, they hone in on it, and they definitely see us treating our phones like they’re an external vital organ.
And watching videos about the difference in babies reactions/facial expressions when their parents are on their phone vs. not is just… they left me sobbing. If I’m going to be distracted in her presence she can see me reading or cleaning because I don’t mind her emulating that. 😂 And if I waste a whole nap time on some dumb scrolling fest like a fool, well…… at least she didn’t get ignored while she was awake and we’ll try again next time!
