As someone who works as operating crew on long haul aircraft, let me just back up what you chaps said in regards to flight attendants. Typically there are around 100-180 people in an economy cabin with maybe 10 people vying for our attention at any one time which means sometimes things can be forgotten. As people have an abundance of time on longer flights little things seem much more serious and it's easy to let manners slip out the door before you board. However - as you boys rightfully highlighted - simply having a walk down to the galley during downtime in between meal services and sparking up a conversation with me is probably the most beneficial thing you can do on a long flight. Not only do you get to stretch your legs, you're also helping me stay awake by engaging me with chat and just with that small act of friendliness I will happily give you anything we have on offer. Ps and Qs go a very very long way!
NYC FASHION Spain from Canada this tues, first time long haul!! Im undecided how i feel , I've always wondered how i would do but the time has come- I can and will do this!!🙏🏻👌🏼💃🏼💫🇲🇦
i buy a bottle of water like cost 30 Norwegian kroner (3 euro) I give I'm 40 Norwegian kroner (4 fore euro) and just say "keep te cage" and I get som free snacks like potato chip, coffee and a chocolate. just give them tips. sometimes they give you free stuff
That is pretty good you did that, if I were to read, do homework, or watch anything while hunched down, I will literally throw up everywhere. It is fucked so it amazes me when people can be comfortable on planes.
I'm a frequent flyer and have a few tips as well: 1) skip the airplane meal if you have digestion problems, I travel with a huge bottle of water, a couple natural juices and a bag of nuts. 2) board the plane last and ask the gate staff if there are any seats with adjacent empty seats so you can stretch your feet or lay down (by that time they should have a clear idea of how many people are on the flight) 3) if the plane is leaving later than expected and you have another flight to change to you can sometimes ask to be upgraded to business class in order to leave the plane faster when you land (that will depend on your layover time) 4) keep a sheet mask in your carryon luggage, you can do that when they dim the lights and people are sleeping. You will arrive looking so much better.
If your flight isn't completely booked, walk to the back of the plane. I've had several times where the last few rows were just empty and I could take a nap on 4 seats in a row! Score!!
I am a frequent flyer here are my tip 1.If you plan to sit in the window seat don't be suprised that it's colder. 2.Always be well rested and take a bath or a shower so you don't stink. And get weird looks from other people. 3.If you're scared of flying get a seat near the wings cause it's the least bumpiest ride. 4.Always wear something comfortable a shirt a hoodie. For running sneakers not high heels and get comfy pants. 5.If you can't lift your luggage then it's not carry on. 6.Don't be a grumpy, angry. 7.They say you have a higher chance of surviving if you're in the back. 8.Always pack the other day before. 9.Skip the airplane food cause it's overpriced and not very good. And you have digestion problems don't eat the food. Hope this helped.
@@donaldschofield3701 not, its just a statistic (based on accidents investigations, plane splitted into two half, and counting survived people based on their sitting). The best place is actually with behind the wings. But since that difference is like 0.00...001% for your case, it basiclly dont matter. Like who here have serious aircraft accident and survive, right? But it calms people down. Drastically higher chance that sitting place, it if you listen and obey crew instructions. Like ... out, you know, ... seat-belts, keep everything on board and go, use O2 masks, etc.
Do you recommend just not eating even on long 10h+ flights ? I never fly but i have one coming up this summer and I'm not sure if starving or suffering is best
Wrap-around neck pillows are a lifesaver. A pillow at the small of your back helps too. Expect falling asleep to take twice as long as normal. If you do have an alcoholic drink, avoid beer as you'll be up and down to the toilet.
Compression socks are a must-have on long flights. They keep swelling in your legs, ankles, and feet down, further reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis, and making it easier to get your shoes back on at the end of the flight!
Remember when people had common decency on planes? Dont take off your shoes, dont shove any carry on under your seat (takes away leg room from person behind you)
All good tips y'all! Red wine is what helps me get through those long hauls, making sure not to drink too much though. I did get fairly drunk on a flight once and that isn't so fun while trapped in an airplane seat. Also important to fill up your water bottle and make sure you don't get dehydrated. And I agree starting the trip fairly rested is crucial.
I have been following few things from your list I have always been nice to flight crew because they are there to do the job for you so they need kindness. In September I had to attend a meeting in London so before landing I changed clothes so I can be presentable and booked a taxi online from waterloocars.co.uk so I can reach there on time
+vagabrothers I would add that you should not let yourself nap in transit unless you are going to sleep in the equivalent of your destination's night time. Also... when you hit the ground, keep moving if it's daytime.
When I'm at the holiday destination I adjust it 2 days in advance - especially if I return on a Sunday and I have to work on the next day. Your body/mind adjusts 2 hours per day.
I have a tip for surviving AFTER the long flight: Try to book a flight that lands at late in the day as possible at your destination and stay awake for the whole flight. Yes that may make the flight worse but for me it reduces my jet lag. For example, when I went to Germany I landed at 5pm and stayed awake for my entire 10 hour flight. By the time I got to Germany I was already tired, but I forced myself to stay awake an additional 5 hours until 10pm which is when I go to sleep at home. Even though 10pm Germany time is 1pm my time I passed out immediately and got 9 hours sleep and the very next day I was able to go to sleep at 10pm. Little to no jetl gag!
What do you suggest for me? I'm leaving NY at 5PM and Arriving in Zurich at 8AM. (Meaning I'd have to rough it out for another 14 hours!) My problem is I have trouble sleeping on the plane (The nerves get to me!) But I guess the solution would be to SLEEP on the pane. Should I just keep myself up the night before? Gosh, it's going to be a difficult 48 hours.
Late flights give your odds of having to spend the night somewhere because of flight problems, huge. I always go early. You miss a flight? They put you on the next one.....if it's the last flight, they put you in a hotel.
when they opened it we dubbed it the disco walkway -- though when you are super jetlagged it feels like a bad trip!!! I haven't been there in ages as I refuse to fly United, one of the worst airlines EVER!!!!
Fresh socks and underwear in your carry on luggage are a must. The feeling of changing to fresh socks at any point in your journey- especially towards the end, is unmatched.
Oh yes. Pro Tip: If you have one of those bottles with those straws that you open with a button, unscrew the lid then put it back on. Why? The pressure in the bottle and the pressure in the plane are different. If you forget to do this, you'll get a waterfall coming out of the straw, and the rest of your flight will be miserable and you'll feel like you peed your pants.
I love how carb rich foods are high in insulin that can help with jet lag. This is a medical breakthrough. But awesome tip guys. :D Really appreciate them.
I always bring a scarf with me on a plane. It doesn't take up much space as I can just wear it. It can be used as a blanket, a pillow, or a sleeping mask.
High carb foods aren't "high in insulin". They generate the release of insulin by the body. Oh, and no, high carb foods aren't that satiating. Compared to healthy fat or protein sources, they only provide short-term energy.
More tips - eat as less as possible, remember you just need enough to survive on the long flight, and not gorge on the delectable food available on International long haul flights these days. Take some common cough/cold medication before boarding, which will put you to sleep in no time on board and will allow you to wake up fresh for your destination. Stretch yourself and walk the entire length of the aircraft once or twice to get the circulation going in your arms and legs. Drink as much of water as you can and flush the fluids out of your body as many times as you can to keep your system working well. If you are a tall person better opt for an aisle seat so that you get some room to stretch your legs through the aisle for a while. If you are prone to travel sickness along with your medication make sure you don't read anything - as reading just aggravates your sickness - and also do not watch anything on the screen which shows travel or fast motion - as watching anything in motion also aggravates travel sickness, and stay away from coffee, tea and alcohol through the flight.
I've had loads of overnight flights. To add to your tips: compression socks help prevent swelling from sitting so long. Drink a ton of water, and moisturize your face to avoid looking like Yoda. Nyquil or Benadryl yourself to sleep. Get a window seat to prop up your pillow. Delta, Virgin and Lufthansa were the most comfortable economy cabins to fly overseas in my experience. United is wretched. Finally, take Echinacea before, during and after flying to help ward off the airplane plague. I used to get sick after everyone flight, but now I'm good. Cheers!
Well I like children but it is a pain in the ass when children are crying in a 13 hour flight. And I have traveled probably more then you. And again I like children........ when they are a sleep (on a flight)
The "be nice to attendants" is the best one. One of them once let me have an entire row of seat for myself on a 9 hours flight, gave me two extra meals and some peanuts :D
Dressing comfortably and in layers is definitely my #1 tip. After my first few overseas flights, I quickly learned that if I need to look good when I get there, it's worth packing the cute clothes in my carry-on and just changing when I get to the airport. Great tips, guys!
Agh. I flew once with allergies (couldn't help it). I was leaving from Thailand where I had allergies the WHOLE time... nothing made me feel better. Not even your average allergy pills. The flight was UNBEARABLE. I felt like my head was going to blow up. It was so bad.
I love your tips. Most of the other long haul travel tips on RUclips are cliche and uninteresting. Thanks for being insightful and practical in your video!
When I flew to Iceland (five time zones ahead where I live) on a weekday, the first thing I did when I got home after work was to take a Dramamine and drink a glass of wine. I was able to get to sleep 4 hours earlier than normal and be rested for my 4:00 am wakeup time, as well as get me very close to the time zone I would live in for a week.
+vagabrothers in the overhead bin. First thing I do when I board (I try to board early) the plane is to put my bag up there, get my noise cancelling headphones out and empty the seat pocket.
Eye drops are a must for me. The air in the planes irritate my eyes after a while so I make sure I always have eye drops with me. Also for ladies, don't bother with make up, wear a good moisturizer and just clean your face at the end of your flight (or in the airport when you land) and apply make up then if you need it. I also usually have a pair of flipflops or slippers. After taking your shoes off, you won't want to put them back again to go to the bathroom. Some airlines will provide you with a pair.
Nice tips. I usually always end up talking with someone. It does help pass by the time & u do enjoy ur flight better. It helps not worry so much on the thinking of how much longer of a flight you have left.
Thanks for the tips. I agree with move around to help with circulation. On our 13 hour flight to Beijing we saw so many people getting up and stretching and doing tai chi moves in the aisles! So we followed suit and it helped with the long flight.
WhasianInvasion I agree. The plane is a shared public space not a personal bedroom, a line has to be drawn. Someone next to me did that and stunk up the entire cabin. It’s very rude and inconsiderate.
I always take it off bc I go 10+ hours and it's really uncomfortable to not be able to move your feet and you might get thrombosis. (But I keep my feet down and mine doesn't have odor)
I usually don't sleep the night before my long flights (partially because of travel jitters and mostly because of my procrastination). I exhaust myself before long flights so that once on my seat I can just pass out 😁
Going from California to Spain in 5 days. This is a 12 hour flight!!! If You're Reading this after March 20th, 2019, then you should ask me about how my flight was
Great and useful tips! I would like to add that, if your ears are as sensitive as mine to pressure changes - do buy (and bring) a pair of flight ear plugs. They are cheap and they have saved me from the horrible ear pain while landing. I also found that I didn't have to have 2 hours of ear blockage after landing if wearing them.
Thank you so much! I’m traveling to Australia (23+ hrs flighting ) in 5 days then after only three days there I fly back to the states then over to Japan (20+ hrs flighting)! And this was so helpful cause I haven’t ever been in a plane!
Taking a 13 hour flight from St. Louis, MO, USA to Geneva, Switzerland in May 2016. I'm super excited because this will be my first time leaving the country. It isn't a 13 hours continuous flight, though, we have a 2 hour layover in New Jersey and on our way back, a 2 hour layover in DC. Thanks for the tips!

I have 9-hours going, and 12-hours coming back flights soon, so this is pure gold to me! :D Right on time! Thank you guys ^^ And what do you think of sleeping pills by the way?
I'm a flight attendant and I was about to comment about not asking the crew to fill your water bottles because we have a limited amount.. But then you came through with the chocolate bribe 😂 you guys are definitely onto something!
I really love your videos and watch them all. But. . . .High carb foods don't have a lot of insulin. They trigger insulin secretions from your pancreas. I don't think that helps you adjust to jet lag, it helps your blood sugar to go down. Are you thinking of the hormone Melatonin? Anyway I bought the underwear you recommended and love them.
Download fast paced songs (Japanese rock for instance) for when you get into turbulence. Put your earphones in and bob your head to the songs, it makes the shaking less noticeable.
Kevin Chen I can’t really sleep in the plane if there’s a turbulence though, especially when the flight is longer than 5 hours. So a bit of rest might be useful. But you’re still right on the “time travel with the power of sleep” It makes me really happy when I know that I just sleep on more than half of my journey :)
I couldn't really sleep before my flight to Japan a couple of months ago, then I couldn't sleep during the flight, and since it was 9 hours we skipped a day, so I arrived to Tokyo in a morning, and ended up 38 hours without a nap.
I'm not even going on a long flight (8 hours, daytime flight) I am just really anxious about airplanes haha. You guys made me so excited! Thanks for the tips.
Here are some other I thought of: 1. If you have lounge access through your frequent flyer elite tier or travel class, consider taking a shower in the lounge. 2. Ditch the noise cancelling headphones for noise cancelling earbuds (they're far smaller and lighter). 3. Bring food or buy food at the airport - there is more choice on the ground than up in the air.
Your video shows the passenger leaving and arriving from the same airport (Chicago). They were sure confused. You did forget the one big topic: Airplanes are germ/virus/bacteria sharing factories. I've taken many overseas flights, and more often than not I end up sick, often with a cough that can linger for weeks. Maybe on your next video review space suits you can wear, to avoid getting sick.
Chances of getting sick are lower if you keep the fan above you going the whole time - keeps the air circulating as it should. However, the best way to combat getting sick, I've worn masks (can get obnoxious, but it seems to work) and I've made sure to get up and wash my hands throughout the flight. NEVER touch your face - no matter what. I also always keep hand sanitizer on me. Best solutions I have. Unless you do in fact want to wear a whole body suit....
I wish I could "travel rested". I get so excited before travel that I can never sleep. Great advice about being polite. A smile can go along way.
Me too
Jennifer Perry My Scraproom same here, i have to go up 4:30 in the morning and on a 9 and a half our flight
I actually try to stay up late the night before a flight so I can sleep during it to pass the time

true that!
Omg haha so true
Flights from LA, California are longer to Johannesburg, South Africa than Australia
+Tess Mancini-Fiske depending on the location flights to Europe shouldn't be more than 16 hrs
Every flight I've taken to Europe travel time ends up being 30 hours max like 23 hours min. That includes layovers etc.

Eliza K ikr. Had a flight that was 3 hours long and the last 9 seats were empty. Definetely a good tip
Yeah but these days flights are always full
i was on an 8 hour flight and it was so empty everyone had 3 chairs to themselves
I was on a 15h flight, the back rows were empty and I DIDN'T ask if I can change plan! So dumb, will definitly do this when I fly back

Technically carbs increase your blood glucose levels which in turn causes your body to release insulin. Carbs themselves don't provide insulin :)
Eltoro1353 exactly what I was thinking, insulin is just there to make the glucose enter the cells so it can fuel you.
I always bring a scarf with me on a plane. It doesn't take up much space as I can just wear it. It can be used as a blanket, a pillow, or a sleeping mask.

Chhaya Pawar Best tip ever from people with no children. Here is mine ; don't fly if you don't like children.
tommie jansen You also cried when you were a child. Did you stay home all the time?

And I think a lot of people agree with me.
The "be nice to attendants" is the best one. One of them once let me have an entire row of seat for myself on a 9 hours flight, gave me two extra meals and some peanuts :D
I had the middle seat. Absolutely awful
+Julia Tran it could be the worst possible thing... middle Seat sucks
Yeah. Feels like being stuck in a sandwich
I dont mind if im in the middle if im with family. The aisle seat is awful for me
Just Monica aisle seats are good cuz you can adjust them to sleep better
Julia T agree, aisle or window, bot the middle
Dressing comfortably and in layers is definitely my #1 tip. After my first few overseas flights, I quickly learned that if I need to look good when I get there, it's worth packing the cute clothes in my carry-on and just changing when I get to the airport. Great tips, guys!
19+ hour flight, and it’s my first flight. Send help please 🙏🏼
holy cow that's insane for a first flight! good luck, sending you good vibes!! 🌺
Kinga Olah Thank you! from DC to Uganda for a music tour and charity work.
joe callis I did 16 hours from San Francisco to Tel Aviv . I got gummy bears from a dispensary . Ate 1/2 the box , nice flight 😊
joe callis wow that’s amazing!
Good luck on your flight ✈️
As a pilot 2 things not to do : 1.Never fly having cold because your headache will be unreal 2. Don't drink fizzy drinks xD
+Marshall Hyasi not even Ginger Ale??
Main idea is that the gases expand which may make it painful experience if you can't go to the rest room xD
Agh. I flew once with allergies (couldn't help it). I was leaving from Thailand where I had allergies the WHOLE time... nothing made me feel better. Not even your average allergy pills. The flight was UNBEARABLE. I felt like my head was going to blow up. It was so bad.
Marshall Hyasi YOURE LIL HELPERS ARE THE ONES WHO GIVE US FIZZY DRINKS 😂🙄
I fly having little fever 🤒 ...its very painful experience..
Everyone stares at you weird when you choose the stand up comedy option and laugh out loud a lot
Lol, yes, I totally watched Craig Ferguson on my last flight! People were giving me "the eye".
because you're not considerate of other passengers trying to rest. if you aren't able to giggle quietly, then choose another option.
Doing a 14 hour flight in 2 days so this is super appreciated!
Super helpful. I really appreciated how it wasn't just another "what's in my carry-on" or "travel beauty essentials" video :D thanks guys!
Yes! Finally one that is especially for half way around the world! This is so helpful
Am I the only one who thinks planes are warm ?
Maybe...
no I was just thinking that.
I was just thinking that too
Well, when I was 5, I remember wearing sweatpants and tank top on planes and people staring at me. I still wear em, but with a hoodie now.
It is soo hot on airplanes now, the last 6 Times i'vr flew
I love your tips. Most of the other long haul travel tips on RUclips are cliche and uninteresting. Thanks for being insightful and practical in your video!
Empty your GI tract *before* getting on the plane :) Especially if the flight is more than 4-5 hr long
+chinolatino 😉 So true!
Remove all the stuff from the seat pocket. You will be surprised how much space you gain. 3-4 cm are quite common.
Where do you put it?
+vagabrothers in the overhead bin. First thing I do when I board (I try to board early) the plane is to put my bag up there, get my noise cancelling headphones out and empty the seat pocket.
McAero08 Remember to put it back. If you don’t the passengers will get mad and the airline could possibly be sued.
That F stop bag though!! Leaving for a long trip and wasn't able to secure one time- envious. Great tips!
Eden Zak i do this. just moisturizer on the face makes u feel lot more comfortable on the plane. Also put an eye cream.
Thanks! I haven't flown in years and will be doing a double-digit horlur flight in the near future!
So helpful! Thank you!
+Gabrielle Marie No problem! Your channel looks quite helpful as well!
if you ever need anything let me know! This video will save me for my trip to barcelona in a few weeks!
+Gabrielle Marie Glad we could help. safe travels!
+Gabrielle Marie thank you! Have fun in BCN
Gabrielle Marie hey love your channel
🤣🤣😂😂😂😂 The tai chi part killed my diaphragm
So nicely done, I'll keep this tips in mind on my next travel.
any advice on how to relax with turbulence i hate it with a passion
+nikebest89 you could try some deep breathing techniques, that always helps
thank you ill try
pray. lol
nikebest89 I actually quite like it
Dylan Q me too
I'm going on holiday in the summer so this will be really helpful.I usually will be watching the entertainment they give you!
I absolutely hate it when people take off their shoes in airplanes
WhasianInvasion I agree. The plane is a shared public space not a personal bedroom, a line has to be drawn. Someone next to me did that and stunk up the entire cabin. It’s very rude and inconsiderate.
I always take it off bc I go 10+ hours and it's really uncomfortable to not be able to move your feet and you might get thrombosis. (But I keep my feet down and mine doesn't have odor)
WhasianInvasion i think it's ok to take shoes off but it's disguisting when people take their socks off
Right on! And, as you noted, ALWAYS be nice to the gate & flight crews.
How to survive a long flight:
Step 1: don’t die
I've been searching for a nice and helpful video like this. Thanks so much for making it!
Roll don't fold
+Grace Haggar that one is open to debate hahah
Grace Haggar
Always a good tip 👌
is it really though lol
Love the tip about adjusting to local time the night before! Great video guys.
I usually don't sleep the night before my long flights (partially because of travel jitters and mostly because of my procrastination). I exhaust myself before long flights so that once on my seat I can just pass out 😁
Some beautiful San Diego takeoff views for b-roll. Love it!
Going from California to Spain in 5 days. This is a 12 hour flight!!!
If You're Reading this after March 20th, 2019, then you should ask me about how my flight was
Have a save flight!
@@ilovecookies9062 thanks! I'm about to pack my bags in a few hours!
How was your flight?
Yes, how was it?
Great and useful tips! I would like to add that, if your ears are as sensitive as mine to pressure changes - do buy (and bring) a pair of flight ear plugs. They are cheap and they have saved me from the horrible ear pain while landing. I also found that I didn't have to have 2 hours of ear blockage after landing if wearing them.
Please do for a long drive.
Good idea! Will add it to the list :)
John Gio Bongao buy or hire you enjoy driving
Thank you so much! I’m traveling to Australia (23+ hrs flighting ) in 5 days then after only three days there I fly back to the states then over to Japan (20+ hrs flighting)! And this was so helpful cause I haven’t ever been in a plane!
I live in Australia what part are you going to
I fly into Sydney but I’m staying in Perth.
No! Don’t sleep before long flights. You’ll feel tired during the plane and sleep during the whole flight!
Thank you guys ^^
And what do you think of sleeping pills by the way?
Never use them, but sometimes have used melatonin supplements. Didn't really do anything though.
I should rest up before an 11 hour flight?? Seems like I should want to be tired so I can sleep half the flight.
This was so so useful, especially since I'm going on my first ever long-haul flight from London to Rio De Janeiro in a few weeks! Thanks guys x
Best advice, don't sleep for 30 hours prior to the flight and time travel during the flight with the power of sleep
Flying from NYC to Hong Kong in two days, my longest flight yet! This video came just in time!
I dont rest before the flight because I always hope to sleep during the entire ride.
Perfect !! Very handy as I have a flight from London to Santiago on Sunday !! Torres Del Paine here I come !!!!
+Mark Neal Safe travels!
2:21 Hello San Diego!
I'm not even going on a long flight (8 hours, daytime flight) I am just really anxious about airplanes haha.
You guys made me so excited! Thanks for the tips.
biased same! how did it go?
No matter how much you need that window seat take the c or d seats for not disturbing other than you need to go to the restroom
I like the aisle seats the most as i need a lot of movement and it's much easier to stretch your legs in that seat as well
So Helpful and Thank You for sharing this valuable information with us
Do NOT drink the water from the plane. Bad idea.
But you don't want to arrive dehydrated.
I have a flight next month that is 15 hours. And that's just the first leg of the trip.
Why not? They serve from sealed Dasani bottles.
Thanks for the tips, vagabrothers! :D
The flight is my fav part of the trip e.e i love aviation
FusionTrain same
hahaha same for me
Definitely enjoyed your video! Keep it coming!
You're doomed if a child sits near you 😖
YAAASSSS
A lot of great advice. In the near future I will be going on a 17 hour flight and I'm a bit worried about such a long trip
Dreading the 38 hour flight journey I have in a couple months 😩
flying to the moon?
Senor eggnogs yeah dude, visiting the relatives up there.
at least your privileged enough to have one ☹
Here are some other I thought of: 1. If you have lounge access through your frequent flyer elite tier or travel class, consider taking a shower in the lounge. 2. Ditch the noise cancelling headphones for noise cancelling earbuds (they're far smaller and lighter). 3. Bring food or buy food at the airport - there is more choice on the ground than up in the air.
India to Las Vegas...omg..looooong flight...
don't be so rude
Bijal Gor oh wow how long is it
@@kav_x2562 how tf is that racist??
Thanks for this, I've got to fly from Syracuse NY to South Africa and I have ADHD making things like this really difficult for me.
I love long flights..
Very helpful!! I'll be flying from Seattle to Zambia in July so these tips will definitely come in handy :)
Very helpful! I’m traveling to New York this summer and I’m literally going across the country, so I’ll need these tips.
step 1: 500 mg edible
step 2: talk to GOD
Awesome!! Just what i need for my next trip!!
i hate hate hate hate hate hate hate airplane food
Same as me, but take away the h from hate
