    I actually clean direct injected car vales by taking the intake manifold off and walnut blasting them with a sand blaster at 120 psi with a valve cleaning tool similar to the bmw one. I can assure you after doing many of these. That once they are dirty no liquid flowing over them will do anything to the carbon at all.

      I like this approach. It’s the technique that aircraft mechanics used frequently back in the WW2 days. I’m very doubtful that a chemical system can clean this complete intake system while in the engine. If you took the engine apart and soaked those components then a chemical would probably work well.

    • @Jamesmark72
      @Jamesmark72 4 месяца назад +2

      Catch can, top tier fuel, changing oil at 3000,etc. Have you noticed anything stop or help prevent it? With my Forester, the catch can doesn't even have enough to cover the bottom of the can after 20,000 miles on the car.

    • @PWRVTEC
      @PWRVTEC 2 месяца назад +1

      @@Jamesmark72 I am going to say its the catch can design you have. If its a system off of Amazon or Ebay or even some Name brands are just a can with ports and some mesh and that wont get it. I use a catch can that is much more pricy but it does the job 100 times better than anything Ive tested/used before.. The catch can system needs to have a inlet port (the dirty side that pulls all the gases and liquids in) and 2 sources for vacuum ( 1 for at idle that's behind the throttle body, and 1 for vacuum under acceleration when throttle is being pressed) as well as a separating chamber that keeps the vapors from being sucked in one port and out the other and check valves to keep 1 vacuum source from overcoming the other. There is also a need to fresh air back into the engine crankcase as when pulling old hot vapors out the fresh, clean and mattered air need to go back in, via whats called a clean side separator.
      Here is a crude analogy: Take a juice box or Capri sun juice pouch, if you suck on straw the juice comes out, but if there was a hole in the pouch or straw the juice stays in the pouch and is harder or almost not possible to come out. So the way it works is the vapors in the engine are sucked out of the engine via the vacuum of either 2 of the 2 ports for vacuum, and in the dirty inlet port and a chamber allows the condensing and separation of the liquids and any small solids to fall into the catch can, and the air being pulled back in on the fresh side keeps the vacuum from sucking the liquids back out of can and into engine.
      I have pics of before and after this Catch Can being installed, even though it wont help whats already baked on it will stop more build up, also improve MPG and less like the engine gaskets will leak. As some engines with the stock PCV system only purged after pressure hits a certain point, or when throttle is pressed.
      Depending on condition of the engine, driving habits and other variables there should be way more than what you explained in 20k miles. There are many links and suck as well as pics I could show you but, I check and empty about 2-3 times a month and its mainly fuel and moister. None of my engines burn oil and yes some that is vaporizes is caught with the can, but I find it to be less than 1/4 of a quart per 5k miles that I change my oil. I use Top Tier fuel 93, Amsoil 5w30 on my port injection engines and 5w50 on Non-Turbo and Turbo GDI engines because of the fuel pushed past the rings because of direct injection, as no Catch can will catch 100% of fuel etc, but Id say its getting 50-75% of it.

    Another idea is to deal with the problem at its source. It’s the crank ventilation and exhaust gas recirculation that is causing the carbon deposits. A catch can would be helpful, but it really isn’t good enough that manufacturers have not provided a solution other than to pull down the intake and media blast the deposits. I would also recommend changing the oil after running the additive because all that dissolved carbon has now gone into the combustion chamber.

    Any thoughts/comments on the fact that as far as I know, no manufacturer that makes a GDI engine recommends this kind of service and a few specifically released statements against them?
    Ford comes to mind as having released an official statement specifically mentioning BG's induction service WILL damage either the engine or the turbos on EcoBoost engines (I found it interesting that it didn't even go with "may" or "might" but "will" cause damage). BG used to have a video up of them using their induction service on a 3.5L EcoBoost and has since been taken down off their site, the rumor is that they were forced to take it down.
    Interestingly it seems like Ford dealers still try to sell this service so Ford released an official letter to their dealers telling them to knock off pushing unnecessary and potentially harmful services on their customers, I believe that this one specifically mentioned BG's induction and fuel injection cleaning.

    A before and after shot of the intake ports would've been nice, but I already know this product doesn't make enough of a difference for it to be visible. Walnut blasting is the only real way to get rid of all the carbon. On a brand new car doing this service every oil change could help prevent the deposits, but at 50k miles I bet the valves are already too gummed up for this cleaner to make a significant difference.

    The reason for the buildup is the egr and pcv gasses . Fitting a good catch can with baffling and air oil separation will help eliminate the carbon buildup . Fitting an egr cooler will also help but few egr systems are designed properly they are designed as cheap as possible usually as a bandaid with the lowest cost assembly this is especially bad for Diesel engines. If they were designed properly the exhaust gas would be taken from after the particulate filter and cooled before entering the intake manifold.

    Someone might want to explain to the "expert" how vacuum goes down when you wick the throttle. My "expert" BS meter hit the vacuum cleaner salesman setting!

    • @waffle911
      @waffle911 5 лет назад +5

      Blipping the throttle does two things.
      1. The blip is basically like clearing its throat. Any product that begins to settle in dips and valleys in the intake manifold will be forced along by the sudden rush of intake air through the passage.
      2. Vacuum spikes when the throttle closes suddenly at elevated RPM. The engine has more velocity in each cylinder trying to draw in more air than at idle when the supply is suddenly cut off, momentarily creating more vacuum than at idle. The vacuum returns to baseline when the RPM settles back down. This momentarily elevated vacuum will help keep the product flowing freely throughout the whole manifold, not just the cylinders closest to the vacuum port. This was not explained by the sales representative.
      Background: Ordinarily, vacuum is highest when the engine is at idle, because the throttle plate restricts air from being drawn into the cylinders, which act as vacuum pumps on each intake stroke. When the throttle opens, vacuum goes down because there is much less restriction and the cylinders can draw in more air much more easily. Decades ago many things were driven off of engine vacuum, most notably hide-away headlights and windshield wipers. This was of course unreliable as vacuum hoses would fail, but also things like windshield wipers would work more slowly the harder the engine would working. You don't want your wipers to slow down when your car speeds up and you start hitting rain faster!
      I am an ASE certified service technician. We used to use a vacuum-based cleaning service like this, then we switched product providers and moved to a sprayer-based service.

      @@waffle911 excellent description of the beneficial effect of the blip or wick of the throttle. My criticism was of the salesman who did a poor job describing the net effect. Thanks for explaining in perfect detail what we knew and many do not.

    I change the oil on my JLR vehicle every 3000 miles to help prevent build up as well.

    Is this snake oil? I would like to see before and after photos. Also, I expected clouds of smoke during this as the carbon burns off, like seafoam produces. Wizard, show us some proof or we have to ask how much BG paid you for this..

      Who knows if it did anything, love car wizard but yeah this sponsored video obviously didn’t prove if the product worked, just how to use it.

    This treatment has been around for ages. You can get it done at walmart for $10 if you add it to an oil change. Not BG brand, but Valvoline. I just hope all that carbon burns up and doesnt ruin the cat.

      it's also offered as a $20 standalone service; i had it done to my car as well even though its not a GDI engine.

    Think we like to see the valves before & after , hard to say if this product really works , just going down the expressway usually works good & good fresh gas , better to scope than waste your money ! Good for grandma & Grandpa who barley get the car warmed up or sum body who's disabled & doesn't drive much or has a short trip ! Most mechanics charge to look so might as well do it but 5000 miles ? Good to scope often to see how far you can get in-between having to do it , save sum money ! Guess better than full head replacement or motor for that matter !

    I'm all for decarbonizing newer GDI engines, especially when you don't have dual direct injection, the port injection added really solves the carbon on valves. As far as doing this to get the carbon off of Piston heads, bad idea! Not saying it doesn't work, water injected into hot Piston chamber will decarbonize too. It's the one big black 'potatoe chip' flake that doesn't go out the exhaust port and gets stuck against your cylinder wall, and then the rings catch ahold of it and drag it up and down your cylinder wall! That's what scares me.

      This B&G cleaner is meant to clean the back of the intake valves NOT de-carbonize the cylinders. On GDI engines the only thing that "touches' those intakes is air and pcv vapors.

    Interesting video. A few questions/comments...
    1) What's the point of the 44k cleaner? If it's GDI it doesn't really have anything to clean right? Gasoline typically has some detergents and such in it already. The issue with the buildup is that there is no fuel over the intake valves.
    2) What about turbo cars? I guess at idle it should still aspirate the cleaner, but wouldn't blipping the fuel create more pressure at the intake manifold and possibly even push the bung out of the hole? (OK, I really wanted the chance to say bung and hole in the same sentence. BUNGHOLE FTW!)
    3) I have 2 turbo VW's. I spoke with our family mechanic (mainly a Merc shop, but they do anything german) and I asked how much of an issue this has been for them. They said it hasn't - as long as you do regular oil changes and buy good quality fuel (IE shell/Mobil/Sunoco vs "Joe's discount gas") they have not had to do any intake cleaning on any of the cars they see. Obviously you guys touched on the oil changes here, but curious if there is any truth to that
    I'm also very curious about the turbo thing since I have 2 Turbo VW's (Don't worry, they aren't TDI's). Got 33k and 36k on them now so curious how they are doing...

      I’ll tell you why….. you ever got a catalyst inefficiency code ? Basically your cat isn’t doing what’s it’s supposed not enough temperature differential , so it throws the code . Well…. Quite often if your run supreme gas or put a cleaner in your tank with that code or maybe 2 tanks …. It will clear the code … because it’s burning hotter , the temp differential comes back in the cat and the code clears. However , after that tank or 2 of fuel is gone and you go back to regular gas , the code comes back. I’m willing to bet the reason they give you this additive is to create that hotter burn , so you never get the code , and it probably helps burn it off verses building up in the exhaust. That’s the only logical reason I can think of

    I've used similar products before - but I always fall back on using Ethanol and water mixes to get the job done. I have similar results at a fraction of the price.

    I used distilled water injection in the vacuum line to clean up the combustion chamber and pistons. Better to rev high and to have bigger drops of water than small.
