Wow, this 54-year-old is very impressed with your wisdom and introspection about leadership and life on a set! Keeping going! Love the channel! I watched it till the end! Excellent
God bless you. The yelling to coworkers on set is what i don’t understand because it always doesn’t fix anything and it’s embarrassing to everyone on set.
another great video, as always !! As far being technical, it all depends on the gaffer that i'm working with. Some are also pretty technical so asking for the specific fixtures, help them understand what i want to achieve with it so it's an easier conversation, but others, prefer a more 'artistic' approach so they can handle it in their way. But knowing your crew and how to communicate with them is super important and being able to be flexible about how you talk with each person on your team is a huge quality that we all should develop for sure ! It's not easy, but it's definitely necessary :)
I rented a set of the Hollyland C1’s for a feature I filmed recently and was impressed. I will likely be purchasing a set of the Pro’s for my next production.
As a gaffer and key grip, the super technical gear focused dps annoy me a bit. It’s a common sentiment with many gaffers and key grips that when dps do that they could’ve basically hired anyone to do the job and so theyre telling you they don’t really value your skill. Sometimes that’s fine and sometimes it can get old. Key grip is nice as most dps don’t know much about rigging so they’re less inclined to step on your toes.
Great video as always, I love hearing your approach of the social aspects on set which I feel doesn't often get highlighted BUT I'm always ready for the "How are you doing" "Good thank you for asking" Bring it back!! lol
appreciate the real advice - communication is the main job really, intra and inter Hey wonder if anyone knows whether the F10 Fres is safe to go on 1200d? Haven't found a conclusive answer in my search but see your Gaffer rocking it so maybe it's all good...
All good advice! Communication is key 100%. That being said the headsets are a nightmare. Best DP’s I’ve worked with calmly communicate without them. The DP’s I’ve worked with that the crew mutiny’s on always use the headsets. They just become forms of micro management and I’ve seen whole jobs fall apart because of them.
Even though I don't get to do what you do as a job, I feel a lot of this knowledge can be applied in so many lines of work. Hearing you talk is inspirational for many
In my experience, yes that’s the case. 1 is usually production, 3 is usually camera, then 5 and 7 I forget. But 2, 4, 6, 8, and so on, are left open for anything you need to communicate to just one person. Then there’s always an all-call channel for communicating something the whole crew needs to know. If your radio can’t do that, then you just “spin the dial” and communicate to each department individually.
The older I get, the more I realize just how much the world turns for people that can communicate effectively.
💯💯

When you are on set communicating with the wireless headsets. Do you use separate channels for each department?
In my experience, yes that’s the case. 1 is usually production, 3 is usually camera, then 5 and 7 I forget.
