Carlo - you absolutely crushed this one. As you said, I wanted someone to push me visually and try something new, and you did that and more. Can't wait for the world to see this one and to work together again!
Carlo man, you reignited my passion and mindset. I had this "give it your best no matter what, without any complaints" mindset since I was in school, I'm now 27 and directing my own films, but during the last two years I was suffering heavily from post covid and I basically had to retreat in order to heal, but now that I overcame the disease I found my resilience at such a low level, that I was honestly shocked!! I couldn't believe how "weak" I have gotten mentally. I was doing work and projects with such a half assed attitude I couldn't recognize myself. Your words "give it your best no matter what the project or is and try to grow" inspired me man!!! THANK YOU!! You are a hero man. Keep doing what you are a doing :)) I'm cheering you on, on your journey.
What I most love about Gian is that, I feel like he isn't talking only to the us the audience, but to himself whilst he does it. That make it so sincere, almost like watching a monologue that inspires others. Gian thank you so much for sharing your journey and your videos really is impacting my journey, really appreciate you mate.
Thank you. Often there comes a moment on a shoot where my heart sinks into my stomach and I think „there it is, I’m not good enough for this, after all.“ but I’ve learned to dwell in those moments, let them wash over me like a big cold wave and afterwards, I just continue. It’s a dangerous downwards spiral when ideas not working isn’t registering as a learning experience but as confirmation for a negative belief you’ve had all along. God speed everybody.
You have no idea how's this positively impacted my approach towards work. I have incoming project that makes me question my abilities. This is what needed to consume from internet. Thanks man
I had a similar situation recently and you described exactly how I was feeling at times. I still have a lot to learn about the leadership part of the job and have been reflecting a lot about how to do it even better. I really appreciate these videos because they help me feel better that I’m not the only one feeling like this as I grow. As well as the little nuggets of wisdom you provide. Thanks for being courageous and sharing.
Wow Carlo, this was one of your best videos till date sensei! Pushing the limits and thriving towards the success is what we all should do, but here’s my concern. Now I’m not gonna point towards anyone, it’s just a small point/fair warning that I wanna give to myself and to my fellow budding filmmakers, who will be tempted to shut the f-up their brains just as they finish this video. Okay, so, since we are talking about the “muscles” here, I absolutely believe in appreciating the principle of “Progressive Overload”, which is to push yourself every week to lift “slightly heavier” weights than what you’re currently used to, which in filmmaking terms, would translate to getting yourself involved into “slightly difficult” projects as you move ahead in your career, BUT, with that being said, I also feel a need to remind all of us about the concept of “Ego-Lifting” and how dangerous it is for the bodybuilders, AND for us filmmakers as well. Now while watching this video, all I could do was trying to imagine myself in Carlo’s shoes one day, standing on a ginormous set of a big budget production, man-handling such big boy equipments while simultaneously collaborating with such a highly skilled crew, just like a true leader that he is and what I wanna be! But here comes the tricky part, and let’s go back to the analogy of muscles for this one - See, Carlo is a powerlifter right now, who can bench press a freakin’ building for warm-ups, but you and I, we haven’t even graduated from push-ups yet. You know what I’m saying, yeah, if we try to bench press or squat a freakin’ building right now, we’ll be crushed! Flat! Dead af! Nobody would even come to pick up our bodies, until they call the mighty Carlo himself to bench press that building and as he lifts, they’re gonna find our bodies rotting under that concrete monster with our tiny iPhones mounted on a crushed FX30 or A6700 body with a kit lens (lmao 🤣)… Okay lemme explain this straight, big-budget productions are like those buildings, and what those buildings need is someone like Carlo, who has been working on all sorts of sets, with all sorts of people under all sorts of conditions, for years if not decades. Whereas you and I, we have a long road ahead to get experienced and get “toughened up” to deal with the pressure and stress of expectations which usually comes along with big budget productions, but moreover, it’s the “you” that you’ve to face at the end of the day, and how you tell yourself and convince yourself that “Yes, I’m finally ready to lift some heavy ass weights! Bring it on!” And to be able to say that to ourselves one day, we gotta have patience while also having a knowledge of our current limits, ‘coz again, there’s a high chance of getting seriously injured if you’re trying to do “Ego-Lifting”, which in filmmaking terms, would translate to getting burned out or maybe getting depressed and selling all of your gear and leaving the world of filmmaking altogether, which is what I absolutely do not want to see for anyone or for myself. Apologies for any spelling or grammatical mistakes, and thanks for reading all the way through, I hope the best for your future 💪🏻📈
love this vid bro - you always do a great job of humanizing the process of being a filmmaker and talking about things most people don't talk about but most of us experience
great stuff man, you inspired me to continue to self reflected and think out of the box. I recently have been trying to push past this funk of "my work is stale" or "is looking the same", so this was timely to watch. also good to see you getting ur legs back under ya ;)
Great inspiration! I just sent a mail to a bunch of production companies and told them about myself. When I described where I want to go in my future it was your name as my Idol on those Mails. Thank you for everything mate! Greetings from Switzerland
Thanks for the much-needed insights, I'm kinda new in the industry and still finding my way around this maze, and watching this video really helps me a lot. All love from your viewer in Indonesia 👋
this just came out at a perfect time, recently had a shoot and was underwhelmed with how my work came out because I was staying in my comfort zone. Have to try something new and do something out the box like you said
I needed this so much today! I am less than 2 weeks from directing my first short film, and my brain is screaming about imposter syndrome louder and louder. I laughed so hard (because I needed the reminder) when you said tell your brain to F off! Thank you and I will keep that in mind over the next few weeks!! THANK YOU!
I know the feeling. Whenever I am asked to come back as a first AC I always think what if I mess up on a focus mark and that one mess up makes people not wanna work with me anymore. But I come in and do the best I can, and always do well. I always second guess myself until I am in it and doing the project proving to myself that all the worry is meaningless because I am good at what I do.
I have been facing an issue recently and it is mentally draining. I get the shot, take it into resolve, I like the shot. I export and watch it a few hours later and... I hate it, then hate myself. Even though it is better than what I have done before, it is not where I want to be. My personal projects get held up trying to nail that look but it is a never ending cycle and a mentality I can never get myself out. Going to sleep with that anxiety is never great.
It’s normal. It’s part of being an artist. You never really “love” what you make but part of being an artist is 1. Creating the piece 2. Sharing it with the world. So don’t let number 2 get left behind. Share it and move on, learn from it internally and make adjustments for your next one
Man I feel this, one thing i try to do on set for each new project, I try to try a new technique or try a shot, with no creative restrains., keeping budget in mind too
I am a fan from China and an advertising photography director. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. It's really useful to me! Can you share the workflow you need to do as a photography guide?
This what I just thought some days ago about my career. Hearing it from you juste validate me I was right :D I heard you will or had work in my country soon, in France, hope you'll or like(d) it ! Keep your cool Gian Carlo :)
Carlo - you absolutely crushed this one. As you said, I wanted someone to push me visually and try something new, and you did that and more. Can't wait for the world to see this one and to work together again!
My guy ❤️
Now I can‘t wait either, when will we be able to see it? 🙂
