I don't own a Z50, but I do own Z5. On Z5 the accuracy, speed and distance of eye-AF is drastically improved. Everyone who uses Z5 will agree , that before and after 1.4FW the differences are outstanding. Even the low light performance is improved. One thing they still have to fix is the face or body detection when the subject is turned back to you. In such case I either use wide area AF or tracking (is quicker way). Maybe in later updates it will come , cause Z6ii and Z7ii also suffer from this issue. Nikon has still to address that pink screen on dark scenes. In video, the eye AF introduction actually allows me rely on Auto area AF almost entire time. I capture slow motion footages and it's very reliable. Also to me eye on EVF the AF is quicker and more accurate than if you watch on LCD, it may sound weird or maybe it's just my eye.
I now get much more reliable results on my Z5 after updating to the new firmware AND setting "a1 AF-C priority selection" to "Focus." I'm still using F-mount glass; the improvement might not be as dramatic with native lenses. Thank you for sharing your test results, Miklós.
I love my Z50, it’s an outstanding camera. That said, I hope Nikon will make a Z50ii with an upgraded AF module, D7100 style 24mp sensor, no touch zoom buttons (or add a way to lock them) and more manual focusing aids like PIP magnification a la LUMIX cameras. Since it’s camera Christmas, IBIS and more DX lenses with proper metal mounts.
@@miklosmayerphoto We're in a"digital" world, touch screens are more expensive to replace if they need to be, that's why they won't go back to tactile push buttons. The majority of the world thinks touch screen is great (and cool) but it has hidden costs. Tactile buttons, dials are cheaper to replace and are infinitely better to use
I have the new fw on my z5. The Camera finds the eye much faster and its more sticky. But my main problem stays the same. The afc shifts without any reason. Same condition, same light. Like you described. A few pics out of focus. Focus or Release Prio doesn‘t matter in this case.
I have noticed there’s a bit better stickiness and it seems to follow better - but to be honest I only occasionally used face and eye detection before the update
It's not a bad result, considering the price segment. There are a site with trials of bird in flying autofocus, both with percentage of in focus images and with number of in focus images in an pair of seconds burst with continuos AF. Number one in both is the Z9, and other Nikon cameras are in the mid of the table. Not so bad.

There is a buck in the new update, if I use the viewfinder and change to the display, often the aperture and shooting speed change to F2 and 1/4000, and before it was F1.2 and 1/320.
Hi. It was a wonderful video from practical usage perspective. I m a nikon d5300 user and a hobbyist. Want to switch to mirrorless full frame. Can I go for this Z5?
Thank you! :) Sure, the Z5 will be a great first mirrorless camera, it will be like jumping into hyperspace comparing it to D5300. I have a Z5 review video: ruclips.net/video/ZTjjcZ-X29o/видео.html
on that video youre using AFA ?AFC or AFS? how about using AFS single point , is it the focusing problem still exist? im portrait photographer rarely using the AFC, i always use AFS single point,
Hi, I was using AF-C, as I always do when shooting shallow depth-of-field portraits. Also, I don't like to use single AF point for portraits - the camera should have a good enough eye AF, that's the whole point :)
Im seriously considering the z50 for video, but im really worried about the af reliability in video mode, hunting is a deal breaker for me since i currently shoot the d5300, and even though i have my ways around it i never want to deal with af hunting in video mode ever again. As someone who has shot the z50 for so long how would you rate the af performance in video mode?
So the AF failed in only 13 out of 860 photos? 1.5%? And there was 0% of error in brightly lit conditions? I would call that a remarkable accuracy, nevermind a "not terrible" one.
I know that 1.5% is not much, but it felt too many - because the errors occured in groups. So when shooting a certain pose the first 3 shots were bad, then the fourth one was good...
I only have a Z50, so I could test it only on that. However, the Z5 has a very similar AF system, and the firmware update is also the same. So expect same results there!
Don't worry about your English, it's better than some native speakers' comment :) Depends on how much light there is - in low light it will struggle a bit, and Sonys are clearly better. But if there's enough light, it will be fine.
I switched from Fuji medium format all the way "down" to a Z5 in a single day, lenses, essentially due to weight saving as I shoot mostly in an outdoor setting. I really wanted to love the Z5, it has low image noise, great performance, and excellent image quality when paired with S lenses. My only gripe with the Z5 is the of course the AF, or the lack of it. For a moving model forget it, I would lose close to 25% of my shots in broad daylight, unreal. In comparison the Fuji GFX system, and even my awesome Olympus Pen-F digital, are extremely accurate and deliver tack sharp properly focused images. I will give Nikon another firmware release chance (hopefully soon), and if the AF is not fixed, I will be switching back to GFX and work out my biceps. I don't care much for the Z7II's very noisy sensor, I see noise at even 640 ISO, or the Z9's ridiculously massive body. The Z8 price is in the same ballpark as GFX cameras, and the latter deliver vastly superior image quality. It seems the mirrorless Nikons are not even close to D700s/D800s DSLRs which were a huge hit, Nikon can't seem to find its identity in mirrorless, Z5, Z6, Z7, Z8, Z9, all the same body (except for the Z9), are you kidding me? It's as if they are conducting product testing and AF performance while selling their test products. If you can't manage something as basic and essential as autofocus in 2023, or decide which body is better suited for what, then why even bother ... I really want to like my Z5, some of my favorite photos came out of that camera with the 50 F/1.8s lens, but I can't risk 25% of my shots with a paid client.
Hey there, if you're photographing moving subjects, then probably I would go for the Z8. But with the new firmware many people in the comment section told that their Z5 got noticeably better in terms of AF. Also, don't forget that the Z5 is a really cheap camera, also offering IBIS - there must be something where it is not cutting edge. Personally, I like the body design of these Nikon Z cameras, so I'm perfectly fine with Nikon sticking to it. The Z9 is heavy like a brick (female wedding photographers often turning it back), and even the Z8 is heavy.
What focus mode / settings are you using? I don't think going to the Z8 is necessary (may be overkill for some) but a Z6 II might be a better option at least. Are you also using the latest firmware update? (v1.41 I think).
I have updated the new firmware version and the aperture got corrected but I have an issue with the focus. the subject is not focusing properly. Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 Z Lens, camera Nikon Z5
Adapted lenses can always be tricky. It could be the Viltrox lens, or the camera. In good light, the Z5 should perform similar to its peers (Z6, Z7). If this is the case( good light) I would think it may be the lens then although the Viltrox is generally pretty good.
I think Nikon has to go towards AI subject tracking. Like almost all smartphones nowadays. I think the Z9 has some of this AI tracking with the Expeed 7.
I find it hilarious actually. The fanboys will tell you there's nothing wrong with Nikon AF. You just don't know how to shoot. Yet, Nikon's releasing firmware to improve their AF. 😂
