Thanks for a great review and instructions. I just installed firmware 1.42 on my Z5, and noticed a great improvement in focus tracking for objects and for eye detect. It really sticks to person's eye or for objects (for objects I touch screen to lock on object, then move camera, it keeps up well). Also I can touch between objects on back screen and it moves focus quickly from one object to another (probably as good as Canon's DPAF doing the same thing, I also have a Canon). I also installed new firmware in my D780 which has Z6 sensor inside. Great that Nikon provides updates to my cameras work better. Thanks again!

I would like to change my focus box to 1x3 vertically, I have seen this done before, however the instructions were not helpful at all. Hoping to get some insight from someone here. Love the content!!
Thanks for great guides. In your old video (NIKON Z5 - 8 Things To Consider Before Buying) you discussed noise on displays during night shooting. Is this fixed now?
@@RalphMayhewPhotographyThanks, that's annoying. Maybe have to live with it. Balance goes on glass over camera in my older world, so for just over £2k, Z5 with S lenses over Z6 II! But still tempted by D780... darn, too many choices!

Ok so I did the 1.41 update. After the update I turned the camera on but the green light on the back stayed on. Even when I turned the camera off. After that nothing and the camera was dead. I had to remove the battery and put it back and now everything is fine. Don't know if this is firmware related but very strange. It happened straight after the update.
Hold the phone. I always use sandisk cards but today a Lexar card. And that is the problem. Did some testing and the problem repeated with the Lexar card, not with the Sandisk card. So nothing to do with the firmware after all. The Lexar card works fine with my other cameras so maybe a rare coincidence. Now and then I discover some weird things with my gear😅😅
Good question. A couple of things to consider: The r7 is an aps-c vs Z5 being full frame. Full frame gives you more low light capabilities. Which camera system is she most familiar with? Relearning a camera system is hard. Both cost about the same and lenses are about the same. Nikon is bringing out more and more lenses. Both kit lenses that come with them are good. Pro would be a f/2.8 which would be preferable but cost extra and may be too expensive straight up. The r7 is more modern and thus better tech, but it’s nominal as only 2 years different. If it were me I’d choose the full frame over APS-C 👍
Hello there, I'm a professional and I shoot for Real Estate, I already own a Nikon Z6 and sometimes I have problems of shadows banding when I need to push the shadows heavily. I was wondering to buy a Z5 like a second body and I would like to know if any of you experimented shadows banding issue with a Z5. Thanks a lot!
Great video! Actually, I am looking to upgrade from my Nikon D5200 to the Z5, primarily for shooting landscapes and travel. Would it be a worthy purchase right now in 2023, or should I wait for a potential Z5 II? The Z5 just rightly fits in my budget now, but I know for sure a Z5 II will again be costlier when launched. Has the non-BSI sensor on the Z5 caused any noticeable low-light issues in your work so far? Along with it, I also plan to get the 24-70 F/4 and a 40 mm F2. I plan to build a light weight kit since I intend to take it on hikes and travels.
Thanks. Yeah the z5ii is rumoured for late this year. Which may well mean March - June next year. You’d have to expect a $500 - $1k price increase from what you can get the z5 for now. It’s the eternal challenge regarding new gear. Perhaps you just need to work out when you need it by and get whatever is out then. I’ve not struggled in low light and I imagine there’ll only be small improvements on the z5ii as the z6 cannot be surpassed by it. Good luck 🤞
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Thank you very much. How would you say it compares with something like the Fujifilm X-S20? The Fuji is the latest model at the same price point, and I was really considering it. But the Z5 is such a quality camera, and my urge to get into full frame for my landscape shots led me back to a Z5. Also, I love how Nikon gives such good RAW images, even in their APS-C bodies. Do you think the Z5 is something that I could work with for a very long time?
@@SoudipanMaity I have t used the Fuji and don’t know much about them, although I think they’re medium format aren’t they? I could be wrong. I think you’ll get a long use life from the Z5, in my opinion.
I upgraded earlier this year from a d3200, do it, you wont regret it. and if you have any full frame lenses already get the adapter, you're set. It's an amazing camera and has rekindled my passion for photography
it would be really helpful if the low light autofocus was better than the d750, i have a d7100 and is a little bit a nightmare for low light in weddings, thats why im thinking going d750 or z5, wich one you think is better for low light?
Thanks for the info Ralph, just updated mine to firmware v1.4 on my Z5!!! I'm looking for a lens to take pictures during my kids soccer game what do you think of the "Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 50-250mm VR" there is also the little more expensive "Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 18-140mm VR" oh and then they have "Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm VR". My camera came with the 24-50mm but it does not have enough zoom to get a close up of the action across the soccer field.
My preference would be the 24-200. Be careful of the first two as they are DX lenses. Make sure they’re compatible with the Z5. I’m Not sure they would be.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thanks, I need to lookup what DX means. I like the specs on that 3rd one too, just need to convince the wife (boss) it's worth the expense! 😜
@@RalphMayhewPhotography MOST DX f-mount (with the FTZ adapter) and z-mount lenses work on MOST Z cameras. The newer f-mount AF-P lenses are fantastic on Z's, and there are some full-frame one's as well such as the 70-300E. The Z cameras force the DX crop mode ON. The downside is that you get less resolution (about 24 / 1.5 crop) 16mp instead of 24mp of resolution. On a 45mp Z7II you end up with a very usable 21mp. You will get the field-of-view 1.5 smaller than full frame, a 50mm lens will look like 75mm. Using crop mode (super 35 on Sony) can help you fill the frame and achieve better focus results as well as metering. You can save time compared to cropping in post.
Hmmm good question. If you’ve got a large budget you can do way better. It’s not dreadful but will be complimented or hindered by a good or bad lens. I should do a video on it 🤔
Hi Ralph, I like your channel a lot and you seem to be the right person to answer my question... I use D850 and D5 professionaly and would like to have a Z5 as a backup. Here is my question and I couldn't find the answer anywhere, I love my Zeiss Distagon 35mm f2 ZF2 and the Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f1.4! Both of them have the CPU contacts and, when adapted via FTZ II on Z50, there is a focus confirmation square that turns green when focused. Please, is this also the case with the Z5 or do I have to acquire the Z6 ii or Zf? I wouldn't like to have only focus peaking or the zoom to focus possibility and nobody is writing about it! I am just a photographer and do not care about video and since I used to work with the D750, I know what to expect from that sensor. It's only that usability issue with some of the best lenses that I love and I can't, unfortunately test the camera prior to buying it, a bummer isn't it? Thank you very much in advance, hope to hear from you soon, yours sincerely Karlo from Trogir - Croatia 😊
G’day Karlo, while I don’t have a Zeiss or Voigtlander to try, I use my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 with the FTZii adapter on the Z5 and am happy to report that the green focus square turns from red to green once the lens focusses. It was the case in all focussing modes. I hope that’s helpful 👍

Hi @RalphMayhewPhotography I have a Z5 and when I record in DX mode the quality is very bad, I don't remember it being like this before, currently I have 1.42 I installed 1.43 and it's still the same. I tested with DX lenses and FX lenses and if I put the camera in DX mode the videos are very bad, on the camera screen it is not noticeable, but when you see them on the monitor it looks like a cheap camera. I hope you can look or someone can look and we can discuss it to see if there is a solution, I did not use my z50 the day of recording to have the option to zoom FX to DX, but if I had recorded with the Z50 it would have been fine and not with that quality. I recorded at 60fps but in another video at 30fps I saw it was similar, although it was few clips I recorded at 30fps. Thank you very much, greetings.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I shot in dx because I needed a zoom lens and I only had the 18-35mm sigma dx.I will take into account from now only recording in fx, but before that the quality of the video was not damaged, it only affected the iso and the video was of very good quality. Thank you!
I'm pretty new to cameras but I've been wanting one for some time now, I was talking to my sister who's getting married and told her I was looking to get a camera and she was like get it so you can take the pictures at the wedding. So for anyone that reads my comment is this a good camera? I'm not looking to do any work and get paid just want a camera to get some good pictures.
I reckon you’d be stoked with it for what you need it for. It has auto eye detect so can focus easily and naturally on people’s eyes (which is a win in wedding photography). You may want to think about buying the body and getting Tamron new Z 28-75mm f2.8 amzn.to/3VIPO2u
The reason the firmware update was 1.10 is because the . (period) isn't a decimal place, its a separation mark. Nikon are most likely using whats called Semantic Versioning (or semver) and it goes Major.Minor.Patch, so 1.10.5 would be the 5th patch release of v1.10 and 1.10 is the 10th minor release of major version v1. 1.11 is the 11th minor release and 1.20 is the 20th minor release. If they are following semver strictly, patch is used to only fix bugs, minor releases are used for feature additions (bug fixes can be included as well), and major releases are using for breaking changes. You tend not to see major releases for physical device firmwares, if you do it usually means that once you upgrade, there is no supported path to go back to the previous major version (so once you go to v2.0.0 you can't got back to v1.10.5 for instance, but you could still go from 2.0.1 to 2.0.0).
still amazes me to this day that Canon once had the most brilliant low light auto focus system in the world by means of an infrared sensor. with my eos50 I could get shots in pitch darkness. not even being able to see myself, the camera could focus and get the shot. then they took it away, why no other camera company has thought of resurrecting that old tech that worked flawlessly 99% of the time boggles the mind. the contrast phase detection bs just does not work. i always go manual focus and use the auto focus peaking indicators
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Thank you for the Video. I would think the reason there is no more infrared AF is that it doesnt work through glass. Bit of a silly reason but too many people take photos through windows I guess.
Does the Z5 work with third party lenses as it would with Nikon lenses? People have complained that you can't read the RAW file when using third party lenses as well as focus and other things? Does the Z5 work with third party flashes and radio remote controls, i.e. Godox?
Re. Lenses I’ve used sigma and Tamron with no issue,, through an FTZ. I’m not sure how that could affect the read ability of a RAW file. Perhaps the quality but no idea how it could determine whether a file could be read. My godox TT685i works on it.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Thank you for your response. I wondered how a lens could cause RAW data to be unreadable. But reviews by some people indicated this was a problem. It looks like Tamron and Sigma are introducing a z mount compatible lens line up by the end of the year. So hopefully no more FTZ adapter.
Hello from Spain! I am wedding photograher. For the moment I use my 2 nikon d750. I have all prime lenses from 24 to 85. Altought the d750 still doing a great job, I would like to buy a nikon z. So I thought z5 could be a good starting point, I dont mind that has only 4,5 fps, as my probleme is more buffer than having 10 photos per second. So, if I change to nikon Z is because of focusing. I have read that z5 sensor is same as d750, an this for me is enough. So, does it focus with this new update similar to a Z6 II? that is my other idea... Z5 or Z6II... I dont do video, so this 1,7x crop for video i read about, is not a problem. I just need fast and accurate focus, and good focus during dance party with low light. Have you compared focusing between z5 and z6ii? Thanks
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I just to know if in terms of photo this extra cost makes the difference. I dont need video, and just would like to know if eye focus detection is similar. There are some fast parts in a wedding, like the exit of the wedding or the ceremony, wherte the couple moves a lot, and when the enter in the venue (dinner aerea) with music, jumping and moving so fast. For example I had a second shooter with sony a7 IV, and you cant see much difference from a nikon d750. Just if you crop.

The Expeed 7 processor is delivering on that but the limitation of the z5 is really about the processor. But so is the price. Basically the more you pay the more you get - eg. Canon and Sony equivalents (some/most of the time 🤷🏼♂️)
Entry level sony and canon models have far better autofocusing performance than this so called fullframe nikon Z5. Waste of money.... Not woth than 700 US$.

Good question. The Z6ii is an exceptionally better camera and will give you future opportunities you might not currently have. The top screen and frame rate will be of benefit if you can afford them. If it were me in ur shoes I’d be making the call based on budget. I don’t think you’ll regret either but if it’s comfortable to afford the Z6ii that’d be my preference. If not the z5 will be great!

Sorry I don't have a 40mm f2.8 to try it out on for you.
I'm trying to decide between the Nikon Z5 and the Canon R7. It's for my daughter who's starting a photography career. What are your thoughts?
Good question. A couple of things to consider:
The r7 is an aps-c vs Z5 being full frame.
If it were me I’d choose the full frame over APS-C 👍
great video, interested in getting a used z5 body and this makes it more appealing
Good to hear 👍 thanks.
I haven’t no.
Thanks Ralph and have a good day!
@@jethrox812 so good to hear mate. Love hearing about rekindled passion.
it would be really helpful if the low light autofocus was better than the d750, i have a d7100 and is a little bit a nightmare for low light in weddings, thats why im thinking going d750 or z5, wich one you think is better for low light?
Having never use a d750 I can’t accurately comment sorry.
Thanks for making this video. Very informative.
My pleasure!
Not sure they would be.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography thanks, I need to lookup what DX means. I like the specs on that 3rd one too, just need to convince the wife (boss) it's worth the expense! 😜
@@LetsDoThis321 haha the DX means it’s for a crop sensor camera or asp-c camera. Some work on FX (full frame - which the z5 is) but often they don’t.
Just wondering what’s your opinion is the z5 tracking good enough to do bird photography?
Hmmm good question. If you’ve got a large budget you can do way better. It’s not dreadful but will be complimented or hindered by a good or bad lens. I should do a video on it 🤔
I made this for you!

Thanks for doing this….gives me a pretty good idea now, much appreciated 🤓
Looking for my frst fullframe camera.
This nikon z5 or the sony a7iii? 😕
Both are really great cameras.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Ralph, I like you ( but, don't get overwhelmed 🤩❤️🤣 )! The thing is, this platform swallows a lot and I thought, you were the one to ask... Happy to report that I was right and, here is the thing... We can never know everything, even if we make our living with it. I am happy and thankful to you because you have responded and that in such a short time, love and respect 💞 If you ever want to come to my beautiful Croatia, be sure that you are my guest, having your own room of course 🤣🤩👍🤜🤛
Haha thanks Karlo. Glad I can help. Croatia is beautiful it’s been a while since I was there but remember it fondly. Hope the purchase and lens combo works well for you 👌

That was an auto correct typo 😬
Would I have to do each update or if I do the latest are all the fixes included?
Latest will do the trick 👍
Why would you want to record on DX? Why not choose FX and crop in post?
That’s very helpful. Thanks heaps mate.
still amazes me to this day that Canon once had the most brilliant low light auto focus system in the world by means of an infrared sensor. with my eos50 I could get shots in pitch darkness. not even being able to see myself, the camera could focus and get the shot. then they took it away, why no other camera company has thought of resurrecting that old tech that worked flawlessly 99% of the time boggles the mind. the contrast phase detection bs just does not work. i always go manual focus and use the auto focus peaking indicators
That’s a great point. No idea why 🤷🏼♂️
@@RalphMayhewPhotography Thank you for the Video. I would think the reason there is no more infrared AF is that it doesnt work through glass. Bit of a silly reason but too many people take photos through windows I guess.
And now .... back to watching the Nikon video!
Nicely explained. Best wishes from India
Thanks so much.
@@jeff1806 yep I heard they weee too. It’ll be great.
Thanks
I’ve not used the Z6ii but given the choice between the z5 and z6ii I’d go the newer more powerful camera every time.
@@FR4NCI3C0 I understand the challenges, I just haven't used a z6ii to accurately comment. Sorry.
Any comment for Z5 to use EF 50 f1.4 and FD 50 f1.4 ?
Through an adapter, you mean?
amazing video, thanks for this
Thank you so much!
Do you need to download each update or can you just download the newest firmware and it updates all the previous firmware?
Just the newest will cover you 👍
does it still have 30minute video record or is it unlimited?
I believe so, yes
A.BC
Major update change A
Big update or change of calendar year change B
Minor update/bug fixes change C
It’s the kind of logic they choose when it comes to naming.
Ahhh fascinating. Thanks mate 🙏🙏🙏
I just wish they would the ability to lock the focus point in the middle of the frame so no other controls or buttons can’t move the focus point.
You can program your ok button to centre it if it ever strays. That would semi-solve your issue.
@@RalphMayhewPhotography I do that but it’s not good enough. I may sell my Z5 because of this. I sent a message to Nikon asking for a firmware update. I may as well put a note in a.bottle. 😩
Is the all firmware applies on the nikon z6 n z6ii ?
No each camera has its own set of firmware updates.
Is this all the same for the z6?
No the z6 is a different camera to the z5.
Excelent!
Thanks!!
Do you think af performance on recent firmware be the same level as canon or sony level?
Never
The Expeed 7 processor is delivering on that but the limitation of the z5 is really about the processor.
Hi ralph
I am getting z5 with 24-70 f4 for £1159, but i am getting z6 ii for extra £350 with the same lens. I am everyday normal user for portraits & street. Can i go for that extra mile or satisfy with the z5 that i am getting. Very confused please help.
If not the z5 will be great!

oh dang.. i wish i had seen this video sooner.. lol i wonder how it compares to the Z6 now that it's been updated Eye AF..
It is encroaching on z6 territory. Just needs more shots per second and top lcd tbh
@@RalphMayhewPhotography oh yeah, ive learned a lot about the physical differences between them.. and i was abooout to get a Z5.. but i started then looking at a lot of videos of the Z6 vs Z5 and i saw a lot that said that the Z5 AF wasn't as good.. but i dont know if that was prior to this last firmware.. or not..
Any idea on that? is the AF on par with the Z6? or still not as good?
i like the dual slot of the Z5.. but not the other cons.. lol if i could i'd go for Z6ii but.. that costs almost twice as much.. so im still debating.. Z5/6 or even stay on DSLR with a D750 maybe? i know it lacks the Eye AF and all.. but i really like DSLRs still.. lol
