  • In this video, I'll show you my process for making grain spawn in 5 steps:
    1. Rinse and Soak Grains.
    2. Simmer grain to hydrate.
    3. Drain and Dry.
    4. Load jars or spawn bags.
    5. Sterilize at 15 PSI for 90 minutes.
The end result is some top-notch sterilized grain for making spawn and growing mushrooms at home.

I use brown (whole, with the husks) rice bought at the store, half cooked in a pressure cooker with distilled water. Never rinsed or sterilized after cooking. The jars I wash with ammonia and rinse profusely before canning the cakes. After the cake is done fruiting I just prepare more rice, load up more jars, and cut up the original cake split among the new jars.
Contamination in my experience is only an issue until the substrate starts getting well populated. After the mycelium has taken over, you may occasionally see a green or blue mold start up, just cut it out with a sterile knife. By that point the cubensis culture is strong enough to withstand any intruder for a while.

Two Questions: 1) considering that this goes on all the time outside in natural environments; is Sterilizing absolutely necessary?
    2) Is it possible to use mushroom spoor strait from the mushroom cap rather than culturing it first?
Your video's are great by the way! thanks...

    • @Josh-rn1em
      @Josh-rn1em 4 года назад +3

It needs sterilisation because it's an enclosed environment. You don't want the mycillium competing for food.
Yes you can use a spore syringe but it takes longer to get started

    •  4 года назад +4

The way I grow mushrooms is finding them, Identify them ant then cut off the stalk, and placing the cap onto a paper towel and into a plastic bag. then wait a few weeks, and take out the paper towel and throw away the rest.(this part of my process is disgusting btw.) Then let the paper towel dry and then you can store for as long as you want. Make sure the paper is completely dry though. I dont sterilize my paper, I don't have a ps. Then I rip up the paper towel and put in compost outside. It doesn't always work and if you have many types of mushrooms growing then only some might grow ☺️

Doubt if you’ll remake the video, but if you do can you mention that drilling a 1/4” hole in the lid creates a possible bloody thumb or finger scenario. The jagged edge of the newly drilled hole and the propensity of the polyfill not to want to go thru the hole easily means you have to grasp it with tweezers or needle nose to pull it thru (if you are the world’s worst brokanic like me. Also, tried to get it to simmer, but my pasta pot wasn’t big enough to allow the water to fully boil despite 25 minutes of trying to get it up to a boil. Use a large pot.

  • @Metqa

I'm curious why you chose plastic wrap to cover the bucket while hydrating instead of using the lid of the bucket? I have buckets with lids.
Also, could you inoculate the grain with liquid spawn directly through the polyfil filled hole so you don't have to open the whole lid and expose it to more air?

I haven't read all of the comments below so not sure if I double up - but the one thing that one does when pressure canning food is to allow the steam to push all the air out of the pressure canner. This requires to leave the weight off for the first 10+ minutes. Once you see a steady stream of steam exiting the pressure cooker for 10 minutes then you put the weight on and processing time starts.
