- In this video I show how I cover the fuselage and tail sections using Monokote heat shrink covering film for RC planes. Monokote is similar to Ultracote and other rc plane covering films that use a heat source such as an iron and heat gun to attach the color film to the wood surfaces of the plane.
The Balsa USA Smoothie kit is a 40 class (size) sport rc plane and has been around for a long time and is still readily available on the Balsa USA website. Balsa USA also has a larger version of the plane called the Balsa USA Smoothie XL. I will be using an OS Engines 46 AX2 glow engine to power it and Futaba S3004 servos, receiver, and 6J transmitter.
For this balsa kit build I use traditional rc plane kit building techniques. In each build series episode I will focus a different aspect of the build including the wing, fuselage, tail section rudder and elevator, rc engine mount, landing gear, tail gear, rc glow engine set up (OS Engines .46 AXII), fuel tank, servos and receiver (Futaba), Sullivan control rods and horns, Monokote covering, carving and shaping wood, using CA glue (Zap CA glue, Starbond CA glue), epoxy (JB Weld, Bob Smith Industries, Z-poxy finishing resin), Titebond Wood Glue, tools and everything thing else involved with building a radio control plane kit (RC Airplane kit). I named a bunch of brands here, but there are plenty of other to get the job done.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes (RC Planes) for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community, so I started RC Plane Tech channel for fun. I am not an expert, there are many different techniques to building radio control planes. A good way to learn about flying and building rc planes is to see what others are doing, that's what I do and that's why I like to share what I do. Thanks for watching my channel. Have fun!
Awesome covering work. Great videos my friend.
Thanks!!!
James, you make it look so easy.
Ha, thanks. Im glad it looks like I have an idea what Im doing, lol. Some days are better than others when covering.
Thank you your plane came out beautiful great job with covering also
Thanks! It’s getting closer.
Looks beautiful great covering job!
Thank you!
Smoothie looks sharp
Thanks.
bel lavoro , piacevole e istruttivo , con cuoriosita' aspettiamo il prossimo step , saluti
Thanks Marco! It’s getting closer. Hope to get it done soon. I hope you are doing well, thanks.
Looks good...on rounded surfaces like your canopy, use your heat gun on the mono and pull as you heat it to stretch over the curves, much smoother and easier than trying to iron .
Thanks for the tip. I have been pondering the canopy. I have some heat shrink striping i was thinking about using or just cut some monokote strips. As you mentioned, have to be careful with the canopy not to melt it. I may need to practice it on something else before I do it. Probably try my smaller heat gun used for shrink tubing for electric wires
Sorry I meant to say cowl not canopy, the removable top area you were covering in black forward of the canopy. Slightly seal at the top with your iron then start to work your way around heating and pulling down. About an inch all the way around to grip..hit it all over at the end then trim and seal the bottom. No slits to cut either...👍
Thanks again, I attempted that on the wing tips and need to practice more. Its an art I haven’t mastered. It would helpful if I had three hands when working with monokote, haha.
Any suggestions on removing old stubborn Monokote. Took off most with heat gun. Got off some more with packing tape. This plane has been in a garage in the south Louisiana heat for many years. Im left with sticky orage residue in spots. Asetone only smears. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I try pealing it off with an exacto. Its not easy. I wouldn’t use any chemicals. I think your approach with the heat gun is helpful also. As long as you get most of it off , you can easily apply a new cover.
Great video Thanks. Been building and covering for many moons. I must say that covering and finishing the model was my least favorite part.
Thanks , ya its my least favorite also. I was dreading it, so glad its over, lol.
@@JamesRCPlaneTech Good luck with the inverted engine. My SIG KIWI was a miserable experience. I have one NIB waiting for retirement. Also many others that i've been stashing. Also,,,, I have the Frankenstein figure to your WolfMan!
Thanks. We’ll see how the engine runs. Also glad to know that the Universal Monsters are still alive and kicking!
Love the build. Do you have a link for the monocote trim tool?
Hi. They are getting harder to find. Sullivan RC appears to have them, they are made by Harry Higley , try this link and also check ebay.
sullivanproducts.com/product-category/harry-higley-products/harry-higley-tools-2/
Just ordered. Thanks so much
Great!
They also have a variety of other Harry Higley tools that I should pick up myself, like the wire benders
@@JamesRCPlaneTech saw those and am thinking about those myself. Maybe a second trip to the on line store is in order.
I’d like to have a prototype made of a helicopter/drone I call, The Hummingbird all that I have at this time is a concept drawing, can you direct me to someone capable?
Hi, I’m sorry but don’t know anybody personally. You probably need someone why can do 3D printing and design. Check out this channel on youtube, he does a lot of interesting things, designs, builds and flys various types: Marko Roolaid
Search for his channel.. maybe he would be interested in working with you. good luck
