Some of it is inaccurate but tldr the flood is the culmination of all the sins committed by the forerunners and whatnot that came before present day Halo if you put it into perspective, considering the shit they did.

The flood was so perfectly executed, the dread was peaked when you saw the crazy marine in Halo CE. You were like, "what 'things' are he talking about?' and then the final reveal of the flood in the room makes you go "oh shit I don't wanna be like that" and then in Halo 2 you see it's capabilities for turning entire rooms into it's hivemind.
Continuation: in Halo 3 you see the full grotesque detail of an infection. The dread is amplified when you see the first Tank form. Then the dread is peaked when you hear that music.
Fun fact 3:15 - 4:35 actually isn't the flood theme, its just a creepy track thats in all of the halo soundtracks. In CE, it plays in the level halo when you activate the light bridge, but only in the original or with the classic music enabled. In halo 2 it plays while you chase the heretic leader while also fighting the flood. It wasnt until halo 3 that it was used exclusively to fight the flood at the end of the level the covenant.

So, I never grew up with many video games in my house, and I’ve only just started delving into the games I always wanted to play. Halo is one of them. I decided early this year that I’d play the games in as close to a Chronological order as possible, and start with the game that I watched the live action commercial for over and over again: Halo Reach. I loved Reach so much, and when I had found as many of the secrets I thought i was able to find, I got myself Combat Evolved. I always knew the Flood were a big game-changer in the games, but whatever I thought the game was gonna be like, 343 Guilty Spark changed everything. The atmosphere, the sound design, the environment, the enemies, they had my skin covered in goose bumps the entire time. I was excited when I finally got to fight the Flood. And then when I got to the Elevator, it started going down, and ‘Devils….. Monsters’ started playing, I felt an existential dread and fear that shook me. I have only recently finished Combat Evolved and loved it, and I am so excited to pick up 2, 3, and ODST, but whatever Flood missions are in them will never compare to my first real experience for me, I will bet good money on that.
