I have to like Alien 3, a family friend is none other than Carl Chase, who played Frank Ellis in that movie! He's a friend of my sister. Told me some interesting behind the scenes anecdotes and signed my Alien Anthology Blu-ray boxset. Great bloke, bit of a character. He's the one who discovers Hick's body and has the quotable line "I always get shit on my boots". It was fascinating when he was telling me about David Fincher, Sigourney, and the cast, sets etc. Frank is also the one who dropped the flare and set the tunnel system alight after being killed by the Xeno. I couldn't believe it when my sister told me about Carl........ I'm a HUGE Alien fan, absolutely loved Romulus.

@@roachmojo Absolutely. Carl actually prefers the Assembly Cut, he said the Ox made better sense than the dog. The on set tales he told me were interesting. David Fincher was constantly harassed by David Giler (who Carl described as a nasty piece of work), the script was changing literally minute by minute, Fincher found solace with Brian Glover, Charles Dance, and Pete Postlethwaite who were protective of him (in fact Brian Glover, an ex wrestler, was going to physically "deal with" the Brandywine & Fox execs after a particular bad day of them screaming and berating Fincher), Sigourney was the glue that bound the cast together, and Carl said she was very pleasant. It is amazing that through my sister I know a cast member of Alien3. He was also in Red Dwarf, etc. he's a cool guy.

It has some amazing scenes, especially the final act and the score is incredible, the ending with that piece of score is absolutely cinematic bliss imo. If ONLY Hicks had survived and been a main character alongside Ripley AND with better CGI/FX, I think Alien 3 would be a classic loved as much as the first two..Yes I know the prisoners were all mostly unlikeable, but I kind of liked the setting...and if Hicks had been around, wow...I can only imagine some of the scenes that could have played out.

So this is a strong rumor or confirmed story…but when Freddy vs Jason came out, and made so much money for so little, the studio wanted to fast track an alien/predator movie since it was long teased at the end of Predator 2. Apparently, James Cameron was developing another Alien movie, but he didn’t want the Predator in it and of course, nobody tells JC to fast track anything. So, JC went and developed his own alien movie in avatar, and we got alien vs Predator. So in essence we can blame James Cameron working on avatar for the rest of his life on Freddy and Jason 😂

Been here with ya since maybe 50k. I ABSOLUTELY understand your opinion on 3. I was born in 80. Grew up with Alien and Aliens. Definitely two of the best movies ever made. For me, at the time, after Aliens, I was eager to get back to the true heart of Alien, being this ultimately grim, horrific, isolated, incredible movie. So for me, with 3, I don't hate it and I'd like to hope their heart was in the right place in making that decision in the first few minutes. For me, it still works to a degree. It's so engrained in my mind, that I would love to hear what you have preferred instead of Mute and Bishop being killed. If they had lived, what Alien 3 movie would you have wanted? Trust me, 3 on a bad day can go to hell, but I think I'll always be in the minority where it doesn't deserve the hate.

As someone who was a teen when the first film came out and who has seen them all in the theaters, here's my list:
1: Alien - The essence of sublime, and terror. It's several strides better than the next film
2: Aliens - Basically a rewrite of the Alien screenplay with more guns and explosions, but still lots of suspense, terror and a great story. Whenever I rewatch the first one, I always follow it up with this one.
3: Romulus - A very close 3rd here. Back to the basics with this one, and some respectable nods to Alien, Aliens, Resurrection and Prometheus.
4: Resurrection - Director explored some very unique concepts here and rescued the franchise from the disaster that was Alien 3, even though the "Alien baby" was a cinematic disaster.
5: AVP - I think this was just great fun with a lot of unexpected suspense, and a wonderful alternate world
6: Alien 3 - Didn't like much about this film, especially the unpardonable sin of killing Ripley after killing off Newt at the very beginning. Still, it had great action sequences and lots of suspense with an interesting twist on the Alien.
7: AVP Requiem - I wanted to like this film. I really did. Aliens on Earth terrorizing a whole town? Sign me up! But the directors did just about everything they could to make the worst decisions at every turn. Lot of potential that went to waste.
8: Prometheus - uhhhh... wtf was this??? Black goo, murderous engineers who are furious but we don't know why, new xenomorphs, stupid characters, Mr. Weylan funding all this so he can live forever... Loved Shaw but hated everything else about this film. I want my money back.
9: Covenant - Oh ffs this just keeps getting worse! This is stupid characters dialed up to 11, and the one saving grace of Prometheus (Shaw) killed off-screen like they did with Newt in
Alien 3. SMDH. I want my money AND those 2 hours of my life back!

Alien 3 is a movie that absolutely did not earn its dark and depressing atmosphere. Obviously, not everything is going to be sunshine and rainbows, but it just goes beyond that by committing such a cardinal sin of killing off main characters from the previous movie and putting Ripley in a setting that gets real old after a while. I love a lot of dark and depressing movies, but those movies I loved all earned that tone because of how their stories were set up without any contrivances and weren’t miserable just for the sake of it like this film was.

Your remark about "it really depends what you come to these movies for" really rang true to me, because, personally, my favorite thing about this franchise is its (original) protagonist, Ripley. For that reason, the first three films have always been my favorite (though, to be fair, I have not yet seen Romulus, though I cannot WAIT). Alien3 is a distant third for me, but I still enjoy it more than the others (personally, I find Resurrection unwatchable even though it features Ripley, because outside of that, there is nothing I like about it, and while the cloned version of Ripley is fresh and interesting, it never feels like the Ellen Ripley of the first three films). Alien is my second favorite, and Aliens is not only my favorite of the series, but my favorite film period. Like you said, Ripley's transformation from "survivor" to "warrior" is an absolute pleasure to watch, and no scene in the film better encapsulates this than my favorite scene in the movie: Ripley gearing up for battle and her descent into the Xeno hive. I can't think of sequence in cinema that gets the old adrenaline pumping like that one. When she takes a deep breath and then gives that badass cock of the head before the lift door opens... Chills every time I watch it, even after like 100+ viewings 🙂

Alien 3 should've been the ending for the franchise and most people hate it because they want the typical Hollywood happy ending. I think Alien 3 made some big mistakes but I respect that they had the guts to kill off Ripley and have a darker ending compared to other big budget movies.

I'm not against Alien 3, I love the tone and bleakness-but I think showing Newt and Hicks actually dying would've been great. Like if 40 minutes into the movie, they both had died at the hands of the xenomorph? It would've been quite effective IMO.

"Aliens" was always my favourite of the franchise. But I rewatched the first four films in preparation for "Romulus", and I've switched. The original is probably favourite in the franchise, with "Aliens" in second-place. I just love its subtlety, slow-burn feel, and utmost dread throughout the whole film.

It wasn't billed as a Ron Perlman marathon, but back in the early 2000s, there was like a weekend that they played films that he starred in on TV, and I saw Alien Resurrection, Blade II, and The City of Lost Children for the first time. Alien Resurrection was also the first Alien film that I'd seen from start to finish on the first viewing. I think because of that experience, Alien Resurrection has stayed in my Top 5 for the franchise, if not my Top 3.

31:25 THANK YOU for bringing that up. It's such a great detail that I wish more horror films today would implement, a small cast of characters without a clear lead initially makes it so much more tense and less safe feeling as an experience since there's no clear latching point for 'well, at least they'll probably make it towards the end'.
I've always had the outlook that after Aliens there's no need for more instalments. Ripley's story is over, we've now seen the full life cycle of the Xenomorph, granted Alien 3 shows us the non-human host idea which was neat, but aside from that I just view all of the sequels after Aliens as unnecessary, with each one it just feels a bit more desperate to me. I don't hate Alien 3, it's just a really dark What If? story to me rather than a an actual third chapter. Just saw Romulus today and to be honest I really enjoyed the beginning but after a certain point it just fell off for me, which is a shame since there's so much great stuff in it, overall it just didn't work for me ESPECIALLY with how much felt recycled as it went on, felt like just another reboot/legacy sequel victim at times where it lost its own identity by the end. Again that's just my take, I'd still put it above most other films in the franchise post Aliens.
