Could you do a segment about your cleaning equipment including solvents? Does your ultrasonic cleaner have a heating element or is it hot water from a jug? It would be handy to know all the parts you ordered for the LT77. Looking forward to the rebuild. Talk about heat resistant fingers.
Yes I will do - I have a practice video I am playing on today and I put the Ultrasonic to the test! Customer ordered the Master kit from Ashcroft's but didn't include the needle rollers or the oil transfer bush for the extension housing but did have the steel pump
Waited for the Tuffnol part! My late Dad used to mention seeing sheets of this or the alternative Paxolin being made in presses in Birmingham with cloth or brown paper and thermosetting resin. It is still in use today in electrical switchgear etc. I suspect the miserable Ford V4 and the more exciting Essex V6 engines used this for their fibre timing gears which appalled me when I saw one in bits even as a 14 year old ! We'll take the metal oil pump gears please!
Britannica Restorations Ltd they still do for the r380, but I'm not rockefeller you know! Have to make due with prehistoric hacked together jaguar boxes.
The one shim I needed but I didn't have, was £14+ shipping! Almost £30 when you consider it will come by FedEx So I got my machine shop man to make 3 incremental ones close to the one I needed
Could you please rebuild a 2wd LT77 or talk about the differences. What parts are apparently not available any more and do they typically wear out? How difficult would it be to fabricate the unavailable parts?
I did a few LT77 for 2wd a long time before I did RUclips - I know the rear tail is different and an also the shift remote - other than that pretty much the same - however the gearing might be different - I have no info on them any more
@@BritannicaRestorations thank you for your fast reply, maybe I will give it a shot then. Mine is from am SD1 and doesn't like changing down in to 2nd gear or first for that matter, atleast until vehicle has slowed down a lot. I had been using Castrol ATF Dex iii in it but recently switched to Amsoil synthetic which is supposed to be good in these but I think it preferred the ATF. Can you confirm that the oil pump only spins if in gear so being towed on a car dolly would destroy the box?
Needs a new synchro - maybe you can get away with a brass ring but maybe a new unit AND 2nd gear - never put a new part with a worn part Oil pump only drives via the engine side of drive - remove prop if on a dolly to be safe - there maybe some splash feed, but is it worth is for 4 bolts?
Mr. Mike, nice tips on cleaning parts! About the tufnol, i had never heard about this material before. Nice to know! But this new oil pump you bought is made of steel, right? Thanks!
Hi Mike, my 1990 200tdi struggles to get into 1st and 2nd gear after warm up. Not crunching gears and its fine initially when cold. Happens after a short drive then i really fight to get into first and 2nd. Almost feels like 3rd is where i want 1st to be and 5th is where i want 3rd to be. Gearbox oil changed and about to change master cylinder/slave cylinder but worried that its looking like the synchros?
@@BritannicaRestorations I totally understand, I bought a britpart one from paddock spares 3 years ago and it started making annoying noises 2 days ago😒😒

Yess, been waiting on this, your video helped me swap swap my r380 input pinion to a short retro one, very grateful!
There is a way to go any you will see warts and all as I think I am going to have issues with the new selector
Hi Mike this is a great video many thanks Eliot
Hi Mike 🤔 just saying thanks again 🤔 been waiting for this build 🤔 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Looks like this will be a long series !
Thank you Mike... I have one to do in the near future, the usual worn splines... the defender I bought new in 93.
Maybe time for a shaft - done well though!

unfortunately ashcroft doesn't stock the shim kit you mentioned in your old video anymore. What a pain!
Not even for an R380?

Britannica Restorations Ltd yup I saw those prices, but luckily forklifts appear to use more or less the same dimensions of shims :)
My guy made me 3 for £4!

Looks like someone forgot to put a Ashcroft sticker in the box, I'll pick one up for you next time I see Ian or David.
providing I don't forget lol

Sounds like it Nick - when cold the tolerances are better - just
Hi Mike, please allow me ask you and the viewers to kindly recommend where I can buy a better 300tdi brake vacuum pump, otherwise great work here.
Bit of a gamble as there is no outstanding make - some last longer than others
Sorry I cannot recommend any supplier

Maybe an idea to fit one of these?

BUT you need a lot more parts to go with it
Gearboxes = witchcraft.
The pinnacle of my fettling career was rebuilding a Jaguar V12 so I'm comfortable with most engine work but gearboxes? Nope!
