- I haven’t been able to use my Excalibur dehydrator much lately, due to the amount of power it uses, especially at night. I have been looking for another option, so when I saw this, I wanted to try it out. But it does have mixed reviews, so here is my review of how it works.

Don't be afraid to do fruit like apple and peach slices in it. My Grandma taught me old school ways (she was born in 1891 and I was a kid hanging out with her in the 1960's). Country all her life, she used old window screens covered with cheesecloth, lay the fruit out on them, (think of them as "trays"), put cheesecloth over the top and place them, spread out in single layers, on the well house roof or some other place out in the sun, a picnic table also works. You put them out in the morning, bring them in at night so the critters don't eat them (you obviously don't have to worry about that with your hanging tower) and get them in if it rains. It takes a good week for the apple and/or peach slices to fully dry. Grandma stored her dried fruit rolled up in brown paper lunch size bags in the oven of the old Home Comfort wood stove in the kitchen. (She didn't cook on the wood stove anymore, it became cabinet space). So nice in the middle of winter when she made apple pies and peach cobblers!
I have used a similar circular drying rack for years. I love mine and use it for all my herbs.

Hello Vickie, thank you for sharing. I think this is a great food dehydrator for naturally dehydrating foods and saving electricity. I checked online and I'm going to buy one soon.
A cement filled tire with your shepherds hook embedded in it would work well and you could roll the tire to new locations depending on the time of year and the position of the sun.
You really had a great success here. You were able to accomplish the task while not using any electric.
I asked my husband to make one.... out of wood, mesh, and staples. It works so well... the plug in dehydrator is obsolete

I bought the same rack about a month ago. I am using it in my basement and have done mainly herbs. It works great! The parchment paper is a great tip. I also put some of the smaller leaves in a cardboard box so they wouldn't be lost during the process. I really like it too and enjoyed your review! Thank you for sharing!

I don't know if you have morning dew in the dessert, but if you do you might want to take the unit inside overnight. You also do not need to put them in the sun. Maybe you have a corner near the house with less wind and some shade that might be better. Good luck!
Great idea Vickie! Great gadget to dry herbs and not overtax the grid with all the a/c we need to keep cool. I might buy one to dry my mints and lemon balm for winter. Thanks for the heads up!! ❤️❤️

I am so glad you made this review video ! I recently ordered one after seeing Homestead Tessie review one. I think mine is smaller. But I haven't used it yet due the extreme humidity @ this time here in Central Virginia ~ yuck !
Interesting! This would be great for my herbs, but I would have to use it indoors. We have a lot of squirrels in the neighborhood, and I can just see them hanging from it. (They do on the screens for my screened porch.) Great idea!

I do herbs with mine, also meats and vegetables. Any thing you can do in a dehydrator you can do in a mesh hanging basket.
How do you clean your net solar dehydrator with such a variety of choices to have later ? Do you do all varieties on different levels? I just got mine. The only instructions was to put it in the shade.
I use mine ( which is a narrower version) for drying homemade pasta, as I have a small kitchen.

Denise, you can get different sizes. I got a 4 level.
I will dyi one with sheer curtain see a shelves for each tray and a double zipper down the front for easy pull out of trays. I have saved the trays from my old dehydrators with are round.

Herbs are drying well indoor....or anywhere with no sun and low humidity
I actually put mine in the house between my windows and turned on my ceiling fan to circulate the air. I live on a hill where it's windy and had it on south side where the wind comes in. My leaf and flower items took 2 days but I haven't tried fruit or veggies. I use my x caliber for them. But I love mine for flower n leaves.you need sun if you want it dried faster I think that's why they say sun dried tomatoes in some recipes. Hope that helps.
As soon as I saw yours I went ahead and ordered me one. I want to try dehydrated apples.
I have two of these but not this brand and I love them. I use them for lots of things. Ive had them for about 4 yrs.
I live in the south.. We get plenty of heat. But, we also get the humidity. So.. The air drying is good. I just don't dry, when its humidity over 65%.. Because, when I have it the past. Those veggies, cooked and tastes, differently to me. My husband made my tier racks from, athletic mesh, polyester screen and some dowels. I have three four tiers dehydrating racks. Mines close with a fold, that contains magnets. I've been using them for about six seasons, sorry five years.. They are so much better than my electric kinds. Especially in the heat of the summer. But watch the humidity.. Peace

@@JamieZoeGivens often.. Check your local forecasts. Or do it, the old-fashioned way. Take a piece of fabric. 100% cotton, white preferably. Attached it to a stick. If this fabric, feels damp or stiff, humidity is to high. If it feels normal.. Drying time. But. Check your local forecast. They will give you the humidity values daily

Do fruit flies get veggies?
Great video. A spot with a little less wind and a little more sun and this product can get 10 out of 10.
Unfortunately that is hard to find in my area. It is one of the reasons that we are able to off-grid so successfully.
Homestead Tessie has one that she keeps in her small greenhouse for dehydrating. I've Def gotta get me one

Instead of using rocks you can use twine and clips :) your review got me excited for this so I used your link, went to amazon and read reviews and they mentioned that. I’m definitely getting one! People say they have done strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, mushrooms, apples etc
The herbs dried beautifully and I guess withhh by the peas if you’re in no hurry it’s a win win.

We get summers with the 80's-100's. I too want a solar net dehydrator to work here. We have squirrels and curious bluejays. I am putting mine in the attack. The directions on mine say to put it in the shade...yours looks wonderful. We didn't pick a nice one because we need to know I will use it. My soul says I will. Just got it in the mail. So will try carrots first..🙏

On my mint too dry it I just tie them in bundles and hang too dry then when dry I break off the leaves and vacuum seal them in jars. And oregano too in tied bundles. So much easier and I dry them inside in a dark room.

Great review. I was wonderfully blessed to get one of these in an estate auction just this June. It was in a pile of boxed goods that had a lot of random items. Paid 8 dollars for the whole stack. Should have heard me yelp when I pulled that out of my haul (In fact, should have made a "haul" video.) I have been overwhelmed this summer with fibro issues and just have not had the energy to do anything with it, but maybe as the heat eases, I can use it on some herbs soon.

Would your dehydrating trays from your Amer. Harvester fit inside for fruit and fruit leathers? They're reusable vs parchment paper. Nice review.
Looks good the only thing I would suggest is putting a piece of cardboard in the bottom so that the rocks don't tear up the mesh but still keep it not reacting to the wind. I've looked at something similar because while I'm not off grid the humidity has been abnormally high and the dehydrators run much longer. God bless

No surprise that this would take longer for some things...equivalent to hang drying... I would think the peas would take the longest... obviously moisture might not be much of an issue where you are however here the humidity could seriously be something of concern .... I would definitely use this indoors here if I had the room for something so large. If you had an outdoor shed it might be an option to hang this.

Wow, you're really out in the middle of nowhere. What region is this? That air dryer looks like it would be fantastic mostly on herbs or thin leaved veggies. I wonder how spinach will do? Amazon has them fairly cheap. Make sure it has a closure. I didn’t check and mine did not. Having to improvise with fabric.

OK so my issue is that I looked at the holes on the one I ordered and it looks big enough for fruit flies and gnats to get into..has no one else run onto this problem

You could hang a finer mesh net over the whole thing, like they do with grape vines. Just an idea since they are a great way to dry things naturally and I have ordered one myself If I do have issues with fruit flies getting in then I will try this. What a shame though a you would have thought theyd have made the mesh find enough so fruit flies wouldnt be able to get in!

Why don't you string the peas like they do beans in some countries?
The flies and bugs can easily get into them. This drove me mad when I used mine this past summer.
I didn’t have any trouble with mine. The zippers closed completely, and the mesh was small enough to keep them out.
How don you use the dried tomato peels?
We have bouts of smoke in the air from Canada's fires. Would this be a problem for drying with smoke in the air?
We sometimes have smoke from California and even local fires. I don’t use this when there is smoke in the air, because you would probably taste it in the dehydrated foods.
Depends on the herb or pepper, we actually induce smoke when we dry some peppers to make smoked paprikas. I've used mine on smoky days and didn't find it tainted anything. Wood fires I wouldn't be too concerned with but burning garbage or plastic or other pollutants I would.
The problem with this type of dehydrator is that it lets UV rays through, which degrade some of the nutrients.
Out of direct sun would help.
I never dry my herbs with heat. It’s best to just air dry them. Tie a string around them hang them or just set them on paper towels in the house. Heat destroys their nutrients.

It's the very latest technology. It uses a combination of solar, and wind.

I have this all it does is attract flies and wasps and I can only imagine what bacteria they're laying on the fruit out there
