We just bought our first dehydrator this week. My husband has been watching RUclips videos about dehydrating. He told me about a video that popped up on his recommended list...the woman was clear, concise and explained reasons for doing things a certain way. I told him that it sounds like a lady I'm subscribed to, who explains the science behind pressure canning. He sent me this link and I laughed! Yup, it was Pam from RoseRed homestead.
Thank you for passing along the correct way to do things. Husband is already talking about saving for a freeze dryer.
I love that story--thank you for sharing it!
Communication in your marriage needs some work.
@@onemercilessming1342 because they don’t prescreen each other’s RUclips videos? You’re a whacko
Fair warning if you make home made beef, or pork Jerky you will never be able to go back to that greasy, disgusting, garbage they sell in stores, and don't even think of stock piling it.... It won't last that long.
@@darkstormy1545 Care to share a yummy recipe? 😋
This is an excellent introduction to dehydrating. Appreciate the quality of information you provide in all of your videos.
Thank you. I love short cuts, or methods that make things more efficient and this one has worked well for us.
You are awesome in teaching! Thank you so much for the education and science of home preservation of foods.
Blanching onions makes it a less strong smell while dehydrating and shortens the time needed to dehydrate.
We had a huge garden when I was growing up in Wisconsin.
My dad would freeze well washed 1/2 gallon milk cartons and freeze a bunch of ice blocks leading up to canning/blanching season. My mom would scrub and sanitize her kitchen sink, fill the sink nearly full and put in a block of ice. Ice cubes could never keep up. My parents were a real team. They gardened together, dad would bring up the jars for canning from the basement and load them in the dishwasher (or wash by hand in the good old days) For freezing they used plastic bags with waxed paper boxes meant for making uniform blocks. Later they switched to plastic freezer containers then finally to zip lock bags. That was some of the progression of home food preservation after WWII to now.
Thanks for sharing your lovely memories!
@@RoseRedHomestead I can't help but thinking these difficult times should not be a missed opportunity to build lasting memories with our children and in my case, grandchildren. I'll never forget picking wild blackberries and raspberries or fishing with my parents or how the house would smell when my mom was making strawberry jam or cinnamon buns. Watching you, I'm confident your family has similar memories and now you are helping countless others learn valuable skills to share with their families. Thank you!
Thank you for this information. It is so appreciated.
you could have ripped this from my own memories 💕
With the world in a state of food insecurity your videos are a real helping hand. Thank you.
How can you train me .I would be very grateful to get those skills
New dehydrator! Your videos are always so informative and easy to understand. Like a friend or my Mom explaining. Thanks Pam and Jim!
Thank you for your insightful analogy on food dehydration! I’ve canned foods for over thirty years, but have been dehydrating foods for less than a year. And yes, most cites say foods will last “indefinitely” once dehydrated. I am an RN, so I really like your way of instruction. Simple and matter of fact. Keep bringing us these informative “webinars!” 😊
You are so welcome! Thank you.
Two years ago, I started a pantry of dehydrated foods after reading a series of mainstream 'How To' books. All of these books said the shelf storage time for properly dehydrated food is 15-20 years. True; no mention was made of nutritional value (I checked), but I was certainly led down the garden path. After viewing this video and checking with the National Center for Food Preservation, I have discarded the dehydrated vegetables in my pantry. On a brighter note, I love using the assortment of dried herbs that are much better than anything I could find in stores, and garlic and onion powder are now staples in my new prepper pantry.
Thanks for sharing your comments.
I read if you dehydrate your food then use a food sealer they will last longer. I will do more research.
What a shame. I was about to make the same mistake. Glad I came across this video.
Chickens love discarded veggies. Dont waste, recycle
I still don’t understand why you threw food out?
I learn new things every time I see her videos, like vitamin C getting destroyed even with freeze drying, didn't even know that.
Here are two things that I see in many of your videos that I love
(1) You freely acknowledge that what you preserve is what you and Jim like to eat, and that we should do the same for ourselves and families. We don't all have to like the same thing! It seems so simple but there is both kindness and practicality in that.
(2) You refer us to the reputable source where we can seek information ourselves. In this case the table of blanching times on the home dehydration page of the National Center for Food Preservation website sounds like something concrete as something we can use to make sure that we are getting the best final product.
Thank you!
I am new to dehydrating and have been watching your videos. This video on the basics is great. I have learned so much from you. I have dehydrated peas, corn, mushrooms and in the dehydrator this evening is celery and celery leaves which I saw on one of your videos. I can't wait to make celery salt that I saw you make. Your videos are awesome, and your experience and knowledge is priceless. Thank you so much and God Bless you!
This video basically answered everything I've been thinking about, thank you.
You are very welcome. We are so glad it was helpful.
Thank you so much! I love the science you use to show how to safely store foods and prep then safely as well.
You are an amazing teacher! Thank you for taking the time to do this.
Thank you so much! We are happy the video was useful for you.
Just wanted to say this video of yours is pure treasure! I have seen a few dehydrating videos but nothing like this. A big thank you for taking the time to do this properly. I stumbled across this by accident and I ended up watching the whole video. Unlike others, it feels like not 1 minute of my time was wasted. Thank you for putting all this knowledge in 1 video!
On another note I'd like to commend you for not just listening to people, but doing your own research before sharing information, as well as standing by what you say. I truly wish more people did the same.
A BIG thanks for being so detailed :)
Pam and Jim, Thank you for all of your videos!! I came across your videos and have not stopped watching them. They are so informative and I love that you research your subject prior to making the video. Thank you for that!! If I am unable to locate the information I am searching for I will always double check and see if you have a video on the subject. I feel more comfortable now with my canning and preservation skills with you as a research. Please keep the videos coming, they are wonderful!
You are so welcome! You comment really makes us feel good about what we do here. Thank you so much.
What a great teacher. Learned a lot, especially blanching my celery, did some last night without blanching and looking kinda sad lol. Special thanks for info on air quality as I’m dehydrating onions and garlic in my garage in the DFW area (odor control); so I repositioned unit and opened garage door higher - luckily good weather in November, low humidity. Blessings!!
OMG: Thank you, thank you, thank you for this information. What an unbelievable learning tool this is for us newbees to the art of drying in a food dehydrator.
I absolutely love how you clearly explain everything in detail. You are one of three people I watch and learn from for our food prep. Thank you for all that you do.
Chrysta: Thank you so much! Jim
I am so thankful for you. It is a blessing to watch someone who cares enough about us to make sure we do things correctly and safe.
I am thankful that you share the science behind things.
I feel safe anytime I preserve foods that I have learned from your
video’s.
Thank you for paying it forward and leaving your knowledge with so many to pass that knowledge on forever.
I have an entire tablet full of notes from watching you for so long.
Love the way you lay down all the pros and cons - no fluff here, just well-presented facts and valuable information - many thanks - Blessings.
I love the way you translate scientific information into something so easy to understand. It's such a talent! I just bought my first dehydrator and will be sure to blanch everything first. Thanks so much for creating these videos and sharing your valuable knowledge.
I just got my first dehydrator today and looking for good information before I get started. And I just wanted to tell you how much I love this video! You did such a thorough job of explaining everything, and taking the time to do such great research. I appreciate it so much! Thank you for this video! Now I must watch the rest of your dehydrating videos!
Wow yet again a fabulous informative useful video. Thank you so much, I certainly am enjoying these you and Jim make. 😎👍
Thank you. It appears you are binge watching!
Thank you for this very educational video. I've been experimenting with my new dehydrator, but, obviously there were some steps that are essential that you covered. Stay safe and well.
Glad it was helpful!
I was so pleased with myself for knowing about the enzyme action……way back years ago from my high school home ec teachers! You do a real thorough job, here, and I am so glad you explained pros and cons of different types of preservation and made sure to keep safety first in mind. No one wants to do all that work and end up with mold or bacteria in your food. I will be watching and learning 😀
I could watch your videos all day. You’re such a knowledgeable woman. Thank you for sharing.😘
I am loving my dehydrator. Thank you for giving me the name of this dehydrator and a couple of others. This one is perfect for me! I did the most beautiful dehydrated potatoes last week. I have used them twice in scalloped potatoes and they are wonderful.
Glad you like it!
Thank you so much for the time and consideration you put into preparing this video. I'm glad I found it before doing my first attempted dehydration and I'm glad I watched it all way through
You are so welcome!

You are a great teacher. Perfect timing I just purchased a dehydrator and can't wait to get started. I have been an organic gardener for 50 years. I usually just give my extra fruits and vegetables away. Now I am ready to get started to preserve what I can. Thank you for showing up🌹
Wonderful! And I agree that these days, we need to be sure we are prepared first, then extend our generosity to others.
Miss Pam, excellent video on Introduction to Dehydration and the science behind it and blanching.
Thank you!
Thank you, Pam❣️ I followed your directions on dehydrated frozen veggies... IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

I just got my excaliber today! I'm so excited to begin. Thank you for your organized, thorough videos. You are a pro!
Thank you...and great for you! If I had it to do again, I think I would choose an Excalibur!
I love my Excalibur! Like you, I wore it out, but my husband ordered a replacement part for it and we're getting many more years use out of it.
This is a fantastic presentation. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge! I can't wait to dig into more research!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments!
Your vids just showed up on my feeds. Thank goodness! I was already in the process of dehydrating onions. In an effort to reserve freezer space as well as diversify methods of preservation, I'm trying to increase my currently limited knowledge of dehydration. Already learned a lot here! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments.
Thank you thank you ma’am, you are doing this nation in the world a great service right at this time especially. Thank you again a lot of us don’t know how to do these things we were maybe not paying attention or didn’t weren’t taught. So thank you very much.

Presto dehydrator is less than forty dollars. Works very well for most people.
At Walmart
Thank you learning so much just got a dehydrator so I’m new to this. So far I’ve had a go at a lot of herbs out of the garden and onions. Thanks for making things clear to understand.
Diane: Thank you for watching our channel. Let us know about your successes as you use the dehydrator. Jim
My food dehydrator arrived this week. I have done some beets for powder, some frozen corn and I am doing frozen carrots. Mostly experimenting. I love the dryer. I bought the Magic Mill and it works wonderful. I really like being able to set the time and the temperature. Thanks for your information and your encouragement.
Sounds great! So glad you are enjoying it.
great video. YOu have answered so many questions. My mum gave me her old round dehydrator when she moved. I have used it alot and people always laugh at it because it is made by K-Tel. Anyone my ages remembers K-Tel records from the 70s. Anyways your video is so informative and i look forward to watch the rest of food drying videos.
So glad it was helpful. And I remember that brand name!
Thank you for sharing us your years of experience. I learned a lot from your video today. My dad grew a lot of vegetables and fruit trees but we didn't know about preservation, we just ate and the rest gave away or threw away...
That is what a lot of us did before we learned about food preservation. Thank goodness for modern food science and research. I love it that we have so many options now to preserve food.
Ma’am you are amazing teacher. Thanks for sharing your knowledge very helpful. I purchased my first dehydrator loved it!
Wonderful! You are so welcome.
I bought a new dehydrator. I bought some silicone fabric so I can dehydrate small vegetables.
I ran my first ten pounds through last night.
Frozen corn, frozen peas, and Frozen carrots.
I checked on them just before I left for work this morning and I am DANCING! Super easy to do even after working a ten hour day yesterday! Two pound bags of corn and peas in the generic store brand were $1.99 a bag, $1.59 for one pound bags of carrots.
Today we move on to fresh celery. It is getting to be a hard to find in my area.
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you so much for the basics. Very helpful. Looking forward to videos coming.
Destinies: Thanks! Jim

i live in southern louisiana and tried air drying mint and basil in a hanging netted tower. unfortunately, my home is rarely under 60% humidity. i just bought a cosori dehydrator last week and this video has answered a lot of questions i had. i look forward to seeing more of your videos!!!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for explaining so many things I had questions about!
I to do allot of preserving all kinds of foods, and like you, have been doing so for many years. I’m really enjoying your videos, we can always learn new things from others. So thank you so much for all that your teaching. I wanted to add, that when dehydrating my garden onions in the dehydrator, I have to do it out side, because the onion scent is so strong in the house, we can hardly bare it! Lol….. Now here in middle Tennessee it’s very very humid through most of the summer, so I generally wait until the cooler days of fall, for this process. I usually either vacuum seal in bags or in jars and also pulverize some for onion powder. Sometimes I freeze them as well. Don’t we just love preserving? ❤️🤗 love your vids!
Thank you so much for sharing your information! And yes, I do love preserving food! It is all about food security.
I appreciate the way you explain things. It makes so much sense to me :) Thank you!
You are welcome. I appreciate that!
Thanks for the great info! Vit c can also be obtained with 2 or 3 ingredients: cabbage and good quality sea salt for dry slaw process or add vinegar. Both are great ways to keep a natural source of vit C.

How did your tomatoes turn out?
@@sarasorensen2650 to be honest, because the basil took forever and my machine was loud I never got around to trying it on the cherry tomatoes.
