The issue with the reel drive stalling on playback has been identified. The spring had come off the reel brakes and was causing improper application of the take up reel brake and no application of the supply brake at all. The machine is now fully working.
45:58 Victory!!! Well done! I'm currently working on a TC-K55 and a recently aquired TC-K55 II. The K55 has been my go to for both playback and recordings, but who knew they could be a pain to service. Your videos have been invaluable and it has brought me great joy seeing you revive these machines. Both decks have developed a low frequency pulsating and fluttering sound in between songs during playback and recordings. The best way I can decribe it is the sound rotating helicopter blades make. Any idea on what could be causing this issue? Any advice or insights would be greatly apperciated. Thank you.
49:50 the service manual for my K65 said the lamps were 8V 50mA so I ordered 9V 4mm lamps off Aliexpress. It seems the K65 has manual controls for bias and eq. While I think the dials on your K61 look better, the manual controls sure come in handy. I wish it had an adjustable output level though..
Sony likes to play games with lamps in these. Only the one lamp in a K61 is an 8V, the other is different. Both in series. Two 6V lamps worked well enough.
Hi! Thanks for the useful video. Sorry for my English, I'm from Ukraine. I have TC-K81 and it seems to have the same problem. Low winding force, when playing a cassette, closer to the end the autostop is triggered, often pulling the tape out of the cassette. The cassette deck was serviced by a technician, but he was still unable to adjust the required force. I didn't quite understand about the spring and the locking washer, it seems I need to disassemble the tape-transport mechanism myself and watch your video again.... 😑 It scares me a little... In general, the cassette deck has excellent sound, I would really like to adjust it.
It is the same transport - this is usually caused by the rubber take-up idler to the right of the left side reel table. A new idler tire should fix it. They are available from Siliconemind on eBay. My video from today on the TC-K55 may help as well.
i have this same deck i been working on for a few weeks it was sent fedx thrown around like a football motor mounts broke tried to fix with strong glue nothing going right got it working a bit pickup reel slow like yours just could not get it right so to the TRASH it goes 75.00 dollars ebay for nothing again watch your videos like them --wc
I actually broke that whole takeup clutch assembly to see what was wrong with it and what I could do about it in the future. Turns out a big part of the issue was bad oil down inside where the shaft goes to drive the idler. My deck can't be used anymore without a new clutch because I broke it, but it likely could have been fixed without messing around with that magnet.

@@Oklawolf You made me double check the service manual. Luckily, both lamps in the K65 are 8V 50mA :)
The TC-K55 (next week's video) actually uses a 5V lamp in the cassette well. It needed changing, too.
