Reminds me of the mechanism in the Sony SL-HF750 Betamax. I have similar larger silver Sony components from 1983, all the belts were bad and difficult to replace in those cassette decks too.
I bought one exactly like this, a couple years ago when I was wee enough that the 50 bones I'd paid were a big deal. I stumbled into exactly each and every one of your issues - except that I didn't, like you have, figure out the stiff cog, so I left it at my handyman uncle's house to get fixed. Never saw it again. Apparently his son accidentally bundled it with a bunch of stuff that was heading to the dumpster. I've since bought a Denon DR-F7. But I did get the system's amplifier as a sort of comeback. Both are 100V since they come from Japan. I'll need to figure out replacing both their transformers with an old PC's power supply. Wish me luck.
Great to see this machine. It was my first knowing of this type of tape player back to 90s, from a very old magazine, some wrong had a drawer type tape player and wrote an artical about it. finally saw it, thanks.
You’re so welcome! I never knew this existed until I came across the other components and decided to google what the tape deck looked like. Then I knew I had to find one!
I just loved everything about the Sony design aesthetic of the 80s it really was a head and shoulders above most other companies in terms of pushing the design and had very futuristic looking designs. This system reminds me of the Sony profeel component TV system for some reason. You live a very charmed life to be able to get hold of equipment in such perfect condition, boxed and with instructions - normally the membranes deteriorate or are a badly damaged. I tried looking for the cassette deck in the UK and what I found was an ugly mess😢 (Any chance you could turn the backing track down a little bit for future videos. The bass on this particular video was a little bit intrusive) Keep up the great content 👍😎
Thanks for the great comment! Sony really lead the way during the 80s and were the masters of miniaturisation. I’ll take note of the backing music request, thanks for the heads up.
Also, I don't know where in the main unit select Tape? Because it only has 4 inputs select buttons, Tuner, Phono, CD and Aux and the cassette player is connected from the back to the rest of the system with a special cable.
Hi, great video :) just got this tape deck and this vid will be invaluable to me in repairing it. What I would really like to know is, what is the model number of the record deck? Thanks and keep up the good work :)
I think using the 7-78 PRF spray actually made the tray loading mechanism worse. Do you think using your Lithium grease would make the difference? Thanks
Great video ! I was wondering if you could tell me more about the matching graphic equalizer and the matching speakers for this model, please? What are the respective model names?
@@TheBasementChannel Thank you for taking the time answering me. Apparently the APM-700 are the recommended matching speakers according to an old German catalog from 1983 👍 And for the graphic equalizer I was thinking of the SEH-V5. I recently managed to buy the remote with the control cables, I am so thrilled to control the hifi system with it now ! Still missing the CDP-11S though 😭
@@markolau6624 great info, thanks for reporting back 👍 I don’t think the CD player was technically part of the system, or it would have had a V5 designation in the model name. And while it looks similar to the rest of the system there’s a few design differences.
@@TheBasementChannel Actually the CDP-11S you have is a (v) version. There were 3 versions of this CD player the (s), the (b) and the (v). And it was in fact part of the entire Precise V7 system 👍
hi, I have 2 of them and bought a pair belt kit,s it has 5 belts in it and i've changed 4, for the love of god I can't find where the 5th one goes but I know it goes to the light sensor, I stripped the top part of the tray and took out the plastic, if I press play it plays for a second or 2 before stopping but if I shine a torch in it contimues playing, any help you could give would be a godsend, by the way that leaf switch underneath the deck is a nightmare, any help would be appreciated, i've checked the service manual and still can't see where the belt goes
Thanks for reaching out! I had the exact same question about the extra belt and I even emailed the supplier about it, but no response. I came to the conclusion it’s unneeded and it’s joined my rubber belt collection. I also got caught out by the light sensor, and I figured out when you are testing the tape transport, the silver cover is still off and the sensor needs the silver cover to work. It should play fine once all back together and the silver plate is back in place. Great work on scoring two of these! You must have more patience than I 😂

Specially interest in Sony mini components i have ss 3gx speakers and needs Sony mini components amplifier as I see in your collection. if you have spare pls let me know dear. The design and idea of a tray is awesome. but bending this high amount of cables with every open/close seems to be a compromise to make it happen. I stay with the way to lock every cable in place and avoid every movement. the solder joints, connectors and cables itself will thank you.
Yes, it’s the trade off for this design. And a high amount of complexity to solve a problem that didn’t need solving. Still think it’s super cool though!

Hi Chris, sounds like a slipping cog. I looked up your device, and it’s very different from this I’m afraid. Sorry I don’t have much experience with VCRs. Good luck 🤞
I do love how mechanical a tape deck is. Never seen an ejecting one like this before. great video!
So many moving parts to drop and/or lose. 😅

What a shame you lost it! Hope you get to enjoy your new setup, and the transformer swap goes smoothly.
Nice design from the 70/80 era.
I like the light coloured professional studio equipment design with coloured push-buttons.
Yeah me too!
What a cool setup! Well done working inside that, certainly requires patience
This was a test of mine for sure, video doesn’t show, but it took me two days of fiddling to get the belts done!😬 thanks for the comment!
Great video. Loved the deck and your patient handling to get it working👍
Thanks!
I have a Proton deck with a similar slide out mechanism. I recapped it, replaced the bulb, and it works well.
Now that was very nice and relaxed video. Not sure I have ever seem a HiFi like this so thank you for showing us.

Beautifully styled set but that cassette deck takes the prize! Japanese tech at its prime.
Yes, I just love the unnecessary complexity! They did it just because they could.
Loved this! What a crazy thing! The best way had back in the 80's was a dual tape Amstrad job. Great for copying spectrum games 😂
Dual tapes were so handy!
Nice work mate. Yeah no matter how many mixed packs of belts you have, there's always one that won't be in there
Thanks! Why do there have to be so many sizes?!

Love the asthetic of that HiFi. Things seemed to have a more stylised inventive look back then,
Yes this range from Sony was so unique. They went full on 80s aesthetic but worked hard to keep the quality and functionality in the product as well.
I was just about to buy one but I don’t have your patience. I commend you.
They can certainly take a bit of a time investment. Thanks for your kind comment!
