  • Amtrak 42, the Pennsylvanian, runs eastbound from Pittsburgh to New York City each day on Norfolk Southern’s mainline tracks, but arguably the best part of the trip is the ride around Horseshoe Curve!
Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania, is one of the best places to watch trains in the country! It is not uncommon for 50 or more Norfolk Southern freight trains to round the Curve each day, as well as Amtrak trains 42 and 43. In addition to the rail park, there is a Virtual Railfan webcam at this location.
The derailed cars seen are from the two Horseshoe Curve derailments that occurred on July 5, 2019, and July 26, 2019. Virtual Railfan captured these derailments live on their webcam.
On this particular trip around Horseshoe Curve, a unique marriage proposal occurred! A young couple riding in the train’s diner car got engaged as friends and family standing outside the train at the Horseshoe Curve park held up large signs reading, “WILL YOU MARRY ME?” You can see the people holding the signs as the train rounds the curve.
Horseshoe Curve is part of Norfolk Southern's Pittsburgh Division. Westbound trains heading out of nearby Altoona, PA, climb the steep grade until they reach the summit of the Allegheny Mountains near the Gallitzin Tunnels. Eastbound trains are on the downward grade as they pass Horseshoe Curve on their way into Altoona.
