  • I had never flown Torrey before. It was a light wind day but was soarable. I had never top landed before either since there aren't many top landing sites in our rocky and mountainous Arizona region. Torrey was fun for an hour's flight, but I will look forward to coming back in stronger conditions for beach and wave swooping and to fly further down the coast. Thanks to local HG pilots Glenn, Wayne and Doug for their tips and advice on my first flight there!

I stopped hang gliding 19 years ago when my son was born. I did do some inland flying, but mostly coastal flying above sand dunes just north of Noosa, Queensland, Australia. Launched via a 4x4 from the beach. This made me nostalgic, and a little sad. I love my son and I think it was the right thing to do considering I became a sole parent. I still have my Airborne Sting X country. Maybe I should replace the lines and fly again. Thanks for the memories and cool scenery and action.

Hey thanks John. If you are even tempted to come over from the dark side then I have made quite an impression ;) Thanks for the reply and safe flying to you.

This just popped into my feed (3-29-24). Hope you are still flying. I believe I flew along with you in my super floater at Crestline when you were playing with your new (at the time ) drone quite some time ago.

Awesome video. Really making me want to get into hang gliding and try my local ocean launch. (A project for after the holidays).

JLDoctorWho Hi JL, Since you are a GA pilot, I think you would really enjoy experiencing this pure form of flight. There is something amazing about riding the air currents. Hard to describe what it's like, but it's worth it. Good luck if you pursue the sport.

Great flight brother! It almost makes me want to trade in my paraglider. Almost. :)

I did fly there once, and Point Fermin prior to it's closing.

...'Cycles' of wind look much less pronounced at Torrey pines (and many other coastal sites) compared to inland, where thermals, day's low-to-high temperatures, and upwind terrain mix up the air lots more. To soar on 'marginal' days there, it looks like the best strategy is to stay closer to the cliffs that face most directly into the wind, while being extra wary of gaps and 'jogs' in the cliffs that can cause one to unhappily sink out due to venturi, too-laminar flow, too little 'ridge' lift. Looked like more than 'marginal' conditions...comfortably well above the 'plateau' - and cruising across the gaps and undulations with enough altitude.

5 ft. is a small span for an RC glider, especially a thermal-soaring type for light conditions such as this appears to be (10 ft. would be more likely).

Thanks Linda. Sorry to hear your camera didn't work. I still have video from this year's trip to put together… too many projects!

Hi Steve, the locals tell me than in lighter winds the air follows the contour of the hill to some degree. There was a dead air zone right where I dropped over the last row of cars, which was expected, and so I carried extra speed. They say that as winds get stronger the air detaches from the hill and rotors develop. And yep, don't wanna get whacked by a big RC sailplane! Thanks for the reply!

Back in 1980 I flew a Bill Bennett Lazor in very light conditions from Torrey. No wiremen needed. I turned left after launch and was immediately below the cliff. My wife hollered that she is not going to come down to the beach to help me get my stuff back up. The locals were lined up on the edge to watch the pilot from the east coast fail. Well just to the north or right of launch was a consistent shot of lift that you could gain a bit of altitude and then lose half of it in the turn back. I kept this up until I had enough to come in and land on top much to the dismay of the locals. This was about the time the Lindberg/Lindburg brothers, ( not sure of the spelling) were flying there. They each had a transistor radio attached to their gliders to listen to music while flying. Torrey is a great place and I also got to fly Funston which personally I liked better.

Thanks for the post Mike. Flying back then was a bit more adventurous! I started on a Delta Standard with a plastic swingset seat and 4:1 "Glide" ratio. Thx, Greg
