Glad that you all enjoyed the Torrey video. It was a great time for me too. I am just a guy from London, Canada who drove twice for the World Open comps near San Diego and am still flying since 1968 first with flat kites and in 1972 my first Moyes Delta Wing Hang glider.

Great footage. Capturing the transitions many manufacturers were involved in creating something other than the standard rogollo. I have always loved this genertion of gliders for their aesthetic appeal. Looked like a great day!

I just watched this again and spotted my old buddy Herb Fenner but I don't remember who made his kite. Herb was one crazy and brilliant fellow and I miss him and will never forget the good times we had. He once drove his T-bird up a goat trail to the top of a mountain in Baha, boy were those fellas surprised to see us.

I recognize several of the wings, don't remember the names of the pilots...long time ago and I loved every bit of it.

...some photos of site, pilots, gliders, etc., in Don Dedera's book, "The Flyingest Flying." That was where I first heard of Torrey Pines.

Those were good times. I enjoyed being there and being part of it. I’m the guy that lived in the camper on an old orange Dodge pickup. Cal Gliders rule…Windgypsy MKIV now that’s (was) high performance!
I learned (nobody taught me) how to fly in 69, the summer of love. I have survived 42 years of flying and I am still flying today... What a long strange trip it's been...
    Peace man

I don't remember you but I too had a Widngypsy made by Cal Gliders in Solona Beach. I can't remember the name of the fellows who owned it. I bought my first kite while in the Marines and promptly jumped off a cliff on the base and glided right out into the Ocean. That's when I met the fellow at Cal Gliders. They repaired my kite and a few months later I had them build me the best kite on the market. One of the first with truncated tips and batton in the sails. I flew like a dream! I hauled it around on my 74 vw bug and would get stopped all the time because it looked like it stuck out over the rear too far. Those were good times.

I flew w few times at Torrey in 77 to 79 but preferred flying Horse Canyon or Big Black mountain. My first glider was a WillsWing SST then I went to a Seagull 11 meter. I gave up flying when I was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida.

@@robertgoggin966 I flew Horse and Big Black also just once each. My best flight was at Horse on my Moyes Maxi III 2 hours in the air with about ten pilots.

I was in the navy during this time. I visited blacks beach for the girls and stayed for the hang gliders. I remember asking about training and the cost of a glider, but making only $350 a month flying seemed so out of reach it might as well been a flight to the moon... drinking beer and watching girls was a whole lot cheaper. Lol
